MK2011 was a semi sequel/reboot of the MK series. I'm wondering if this is an actual reboot, based on this comment from the article...

"Players step into an original story showcasing some of the game’s most prolific characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil and tie the tale together."

Most prolific characters? Off the top of my head, the ones that come to mind are Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Sonya, Liu Kang, Kano, Goro etc. Pretty much all of the MK1 original cast.

Plus, a retelling of MK4 woudn't be that original of a story, and with human Sub-Zero in the picture, I wonder if this is a reboot.

I hope not. I want this to be a continuation of MK9, because I want to see what happens next. I don't want to go back in time AGAIN, only to see the old storyline to be repeated, or even to have ANOTHER storyline thrown into the mix.

The appearance of human Sub-Zero made me wonder if they story for MKX is a prequel. Which I'd totally be OK with.

A prequel seems like a silly idea on paper, though. The last game left us with a pretty meaty plot device to go forward with, being Shinnok and Quan Chi putting their plans into action to take over both Earthrealm and Outworld. A continuation of that story arc is really the only logical step.

Y'know, I wonder about that "multiple variations of each character" claim.

Could be the plot is about the consequences of Raiden dicking with time and now different versions of the MK universe are crossing over with each other.
Interesting to note that X isn't just the roman numeral ten, it also stands for "cross"...

For the sake of the post-MK3 characters, I'm hoping against a prequel. I was really getting pumped for Fujin, but now anything goes.

I'm just speculating wildly. I don't necessarily think it's a silly idea on paper, however. I could easily see NRS exploring the MKM:SB timeline, getting to bring back many of the characters they killed in MK9 and it also gives room to introduce new characters that they can bring forward to MK11.

But, its seems like an unlikely possibility to me. I agree they will probably just move forward with MK4-and-up timeline.

This is intriguing, but seems convoluted. I wouldn't rule anything out before we get a more full picture of the game at E3.

You might actually be on to something:

RT @timbo869 @noobde will the story in mortal kombat X Kontinue from mk9 or be a new original story EB: Sort of BOTH.. hard 2 explain.

Ed hinted 'X' isn't just 10. I'm thinking since it's sort of a continuation of MK9 and sort of not, it's going cross-timelines or something.

My thoughts exactly.

RT @topherous86 @noobde so the a39;Xa39; has multiple meanings, right? #MKX EB: Yea. X can be used in a number of ways. That worked out nicely.

These tweets are news to me, hold shit. If it's an MK v MK in some sort of time fuck up, then hell yeah. Now they can do a lot with any of the characters, rather than just keeping most of the MK9 characters dead forever.

What if it's a story told through time?

So say this is Bi-Han and part of the MKX story does go back and revisit parts of the Mythologies story. This would allow for Human sub to exist and it explains it as a plot point. The story would be retold a bit differently to help make sense with the previous game. They could also fix the MKSF story, and make the Eye of Chitian something actually powerful. The actual story could be changed entirely with other character's, but make it so that when combined the Eye of Chitian and Shinnok's amulet Shinnok is able to finally be free. I had also heard theories, way back when people were first beating MK9 about Shinnok also having told his past self about future events and how to correct them, to gurantee his victory. This would then revist the "ex" timeline where you learn more about Shinnok. Shit they wanted to revamp with a time travel story then tie the loose ends all up and end the time travel segment in this game so as to move forward.

So we're getting a Crisis on Infinite Mortal Kombats? God, they're turning into DC comics. The more they try to clarify and unfuck themselves they just fuck themselves even more.

There are a couple of ways to look at this trailer, some more valid than others.

The Sub-Zero fight vs Scorpion could be entirely flavor and have no actual baring on the story of MKX. Remember when MK9 released two CG trailers, one showing the bridge showdown between a cast of characters and the one where Raiden gets ripped in half by Kahn? Neither of those proved to be anything more than marketing tools.

And that's where I stand on this trailer personally. I don't think it has any real story significance. It shows some clues for gameplay, some new designs for the two poster boys, and that's all it's meant to be.

The over, of course is the idea that this is indeed indicative to some clues for the next story. IF that's the case, than maybe the multiple iterations of characters can mean that the two timelines or collapsing thanks to Raiden messing.

Wow now I'm forever going to have images of MKD Scorpion and Sub-Zero basically spilling spoilers and messing up the alternate timeline IF they manage to crossover

MKX Scorpion: Who the hell are you?
MKD Scorpion: Why I'm Scorpion don't you recognize the skull crest?
MKX Scorpion: A real Shurai Ryu would not reveal himself so bluntly imposter!
MKD Scorpion: A real Shurai Ryu wouldn't be Quan Chi's bitch!
(MKX Scorpion feels owned)
MKD Scorpion: Yeah that's what I thought. Not so good with critical thinking skills are you?
MKX Scorpion: SHUT UP! You know nothing about me!
MKD Scorpion: Actually I've had my family killed, got convinced TWO times by my ally Quan Chi (notice I didn't use MASTER; really man he's NOT a manipulative control freak) that Sub-Zero killed my family, got thrown into a Soulnado by two seemingly weak, but tough demons, became resurrected by the Elder Gods as their Champion, and in return they had the FUCKING audacity to resurrect my clan as undead zombies! And to answer your question YES ELDER GOD DAMMIT other me, I know what you are. Now enjoy your otherworldly existence!
(about to enter through open portal until MKX Quan Chi arrives)
MKD Scorpion: Spoilers! Quan Chi killed your family and clan, not Sub-Zero! Enjoy your vengeance!
(walks through portal as MKX Scorpion walks pissed at MKX Quan Chi who is taken back by the spoilers)

Yea they would be annoying, but at least they would have the potential for comic relief XD

You're an ass.

What you're saying makes far too much sense, and now I'm afraid MKX is going to be a repeat of Injustice.

Perhaps Raiden and the gang need to search out a Bi-Han from an alternate universe. The battle against Shinnok and Quan Chi might have become too much. Best place to look? The man who already beat them in MK:M.

Gives NRS a way to bring back human Subzero and pretty much anything else they want to. Risky? Yes. But as far as storytelling goes, I kind of like this idea.

I think it's a sequel to MK9, but since Raiden messed with the events of the past, the way the story originally progressed into MK4 is now altered and new.

I have a feeling that in MKX, Shinnok is going to rise to power in a different way this time around and Raiden messes up again and has to go back in time to bring back characters that died. Once these charterers are back the timelines starts morphing with one another causing different versions of charterers to appear.
