I don't think the MK timeline is parallel with ours. It's alot more floaty than that.

However, the time line is closer to ours than the 1800' or the Before Christ period. (If we take Sonya, Stryker and Cage's events let say).

I've always seen the story as taking place in "whatever year it is now". So if you played MK back in the 90s, then it takes place in the 90s. If you played it yesterday, then it took place yesterday. Of course there are a lot of really sci-fi elements thrown in that make it seem more like the near future, or a more advanced version of modern-day. In other words, it doesn't really have a set year; just "modern".

I don't think the "future" in this game (the part that takes place 25 years later) will look all chromie, or have flying cars or anything like that. It'll probably be more or less the same, but probably with more technology.

Well MK4-MKD took many, many years to develop, so this is more like a rewritten future.

MK takes place in a floating timeline. Up until recently it was ascertainable that the first tournament took place in the 90's. However MK9's story mode has the Special Forces using extremely advanced modern-ish tech, for example, that just didn't exist then (the sci-fi element of the cyber-ninjas aside). When measuring the MK timeline, I find it's best to use the MK1 tourney as a marker, and go "500 years before", etc. rather than ascribing specific dates.

It's not that hard to figure out.

MK games take place in the present. As far as the reboot is concerned, the past (from MK1 to 3) became the present, while the events of Armageddon were now from a future that was prevented. So 25 years later, MKX's story will take place in 2039.

It's like the James Bond movies. They're always set in the present. In JB continuity, the current movies wouldn't refer to the events of Dr No as something that happened fifty years ago. Casino Royale took take place before Dr No, if I'm not mistaken.

If we get another reboot in say, 2024, then the events of the first games will happen in the 2020s, which will be the present by then.
