While Liu is either dead or in a coma, will we have a new protector of Earthrealm?

I'd like to say Liu is neither, but that's just me. If anyone is to become the new protector of Earthrealm, I'm looking at Kung Lao right now as we yet to see who else may come of interest.

You're implying theres some sort of tournament to win. That doesnt seem to be the case. And if it is, hopefully its not a "good" character. Im sick of the binary bullshit.

I think Kung Lao was brought back to take care of an evil Liu Kang.
wait Liu is in a coma? How did you land on that being a possible outcome of what happened to him at the end of MK2011?
If he's alive he is angry with Raiden and likely the gods in general, but is still technically the protector of Earth even though it is likely he would have turned his back on his station as said protector due to the events of the last game.
If there is a need for someone to fill the role of protector while Liu is out of commission though I can see it being a Seidan trained Johnny Cage and the Special Forces lead by Sonya.

Well then, that would make the main boss a good guy if the bad guy was to be protector, right?

I think it'll be sub zero this time

No.
There is no need for good and bad characters anymore. The series needs to grow up. There is no black and white in the world, there is only gray and grey.

Let's back Quan Chi for Champion of Mortal Kombat as Earthrealm gets destroyed
That would be a twist
But Boon and co would never have the guts to pull off such an ending

The Vogel tweet pretty much confirms Liu Kang is still alive even though it makes no sense at all. He was definitely intended dead in MK9.
Regardless, I could see Liu Kang eventually pushing to be the new protector of Earthrealm in one form or another. If he is indeed alive, he must be tired of Raiden's bullshit.
Anyways. Now for the part that brought me into this thread. "A new champion" is something that has been on my mind.
When it comes to Earthrealm, I have no clue nor do I care at all. If Liu is out of the picture than I can see it all falling to Kung Lao which may happen now that he is back and seemingly aged. He always was wanting to prove himself and play that big role.
What really interests me is whether or not we will see a new champion of the Elder Gods. The soulnado in Earthrealm isn't the same as the soulnado that was in outworld. The destinations varied but the facts are what they are. Scorpion was thrown into the Soulnado and "his hellspawn body was ripped apart by the purity of that realm"
Sounds familiar
Although there are a few elements here that confuse me. Both Scorpion and Quan Chi are catalyzed by Quan Chi's powers. Whether that's sorcery, necromancy etc isn't my concern. Why did Noob Saibot's entry into the soulnado actually destroy it and Scorpion's didn't? One could argue that Noob Saibot's level of evil might contest the purity of the souls but as far as I am aware, that would just be healthy speculation.
I can see an outcome to Raiden toying with the timeline being that Bi-Han is chosen right out of that soulnado as the Elder Gods' champion early, rather than Scorpion.
-He defeated Shinnok who will likely be back
-He defeated Quan Chi who is back
-We need a human Subzero to fit this gap
-With Raiden being so hellbent on victory, he will think of Bi-Han
I'm just saying. Bi-Han for champion. Good or Evil is a lost battle but a champion none the less.

Bo Rai Cho, Kenshi's boy, Johnny Cage, Cyrax, Kai, Raiden, Nightwolf, Mileena, Sheeva, Kitana, Shujinko and Sindel are possible good choices; evil champions can include Shang Tsung and Sektor. What if the Elder Gods release Shao Kahn just so he can have the humiliating job of protecting Earthrealm from Outworld, this would probably happen later on in the game; that champion would be unexpected.

I would be completely satisfied with Bi-Han being the new champion, he is my favorite Sub-Zero.

I'd be so down for this. But with the return of Kung Lao, i'm leaning towards him being the champion.
But with no tournament why is there a need for a Champion anyways?

Well not really a champion, but regardless; At the end there's most likely only going to be that one fighter who defeats the boss/brings the story to a conclusion.
I don't think I'd mind Kai, but I wish it'd be Reptile.
Earthrealm is probably the closest he's going to get to Zaterra at this point. Why not fight for it?
