I've never understood why people really care when games go gold. The release date stays the same, it's not like going gold faster means we get it sooner or something.
It's like someone calling you and saying, "I just baked you a cake!" and you respond, "Can I eat it now?" and they say, "No, it still needs to sit in the freezer for a month!"
Which leaves me thinking, "Well what the hell do I care, I already knew I was getting cake next month... if I don't get it now, why is this news?"

I think going gold, for people means that "Yes! Everything is done and ready", we do know the game comes out April 14th, but sometimes games get delayed.
Going gold is a time to celebrate, because you are now sure the game won't get delayed, that's my best guess :p.
