I'm pretty sure all that's required is to have the last hit be in the X-Ray. That's how I did it when I was messing around with Sonya the other day. Might be wrong but I don't know.

Don't they have to be unlocked? I was reading on...another site...that you unlock the X-Ray Brutalities via the gambling game in the Krypt, because you can't "find" them anywhere else in the krypt.
Gotta say, the sheer amount of finishing moves available in the game makes up for the utter lack of stage fatalities.
2 fatalities (3 for some with upcoming DLC)
4 Brutalities at any given time (2 non-specific, one style-specific, one X-Ray)
up to 5 Faction Kill options
1 confirmed Stage Brutality
That's 12 possible ways to kill an opponent. And Brutalities are just extra satisfying...especially the ones that have subtle variations (like Johnny's)

Not to sound like a hipster, but I knew the new Brutalities would be great from the moment of their reveal. Fatalities, cool as some of they may be, have grown to be long-winded and obnoxiously predictable. The Brutalities are a breath of fresh air.
I appreciate how sudden they are, and the fact that they feel like a part of the fight as opposed to just a triggered post cinematic. That they require an additional level of skill and attentiveness makes them all the more flashy. Best of all, you get all this without having to watch a short film you've probably seen one too many times.
I really disliked Sonya's Fatalities in MK9, yet their reincarnation as Brutalities are so brilliantly presented that I strive for them every fight. The new Leg Split is especially great. I love how messy and uneven the dismemberment is now, and especially how her smashing of their face on the ground causes it become fully disfigured. Reads awfully when you write it out, but it looks SICK in-game. My favorite one, and (luckily) it's present in all variations.
I also love her Special Forces Brutality, which reduces the upper half of the body to a panicked charred skeleton upon impact with the drone. Unfortunately Covert Ops and Demolition are preferable to this variation, but I'm considering picking up SF as well just to see more of this.
And yet, still, no Brutality beats Shinnok's Face Steal. I decided to learn Impostor based SOLELY on how ridiculously awesome this is. Some degree of fun later, he's become my second main.
I thought this might be it as well, but it doesn't hold true every time. It might be that the last hit of the X-Ray has to be one that kills them, specifically? But then again... I'm fairly certain I remember times when this didn't hold true either.
It's a mystery... and holy shit, am I glad for it. When it happens, it surprises even me.

Someone once told me that it had to be done like this you first end the first round with an X-Ray then do it again for the next round. it might be a rumor but some also say on other forums that some may have a trick to doing them like holding forward, backward, down, or up.

I love brutalities! Some are really easy also! Sub Zeros is easy (just freeze then uppercut) and Erron Blacks is just a throw which I prefer to his fatalities anyhow! I've done an x-Ray one also. All I did was do an x-Ray to end the match, then the R1 icon came up below my lifebar, I press it and hey presto! I've tried it since and it hasn't worked lol.

Haven't tried his yet but I've also only played with Jax in story mode so...
The brutalities that require the opponent to be blocking during the final hit are the ones giving me trouble though. Like Goro's "Squash" and Johnny's "One, Two".

I'm in this boat too! I wasn't really excited about them before I got the game but the first time I did one was by accident and it was so satisfying! Brutalities have now supplanted Fatalities as my go-to finisher. Picking a favorite is hard but since Cassie is my main, I have to go with her enhanced Ball Buster.
I haven't even bothered trying to unlock them all in the Krypt yet because I love pulling them off by accident because it's such a surprising, gratifying result. It really feels like back in 1992 the first time I saw someone do a fatality. My mind was totally blown!
I hope these are here to stay!

I just pulled another X-Ray brutality this time with Liu Kang. It's bizzare because after your opponent explodes it's just says "finish him" so I just stood there looking very, very confused lol!

It's something I shouldn't like because I wanted something different for brutalities but yet I like it anyway. I think the idea is nice and I said that a long time ago but my problem was them calling it "brutality" now I don't give two shits about the name, every time it happens, in my head I imagine myself doing a fatality not a "brutality" xD.
They are a nice concept though, it pisses people off.

Guys did you know that both Johnny and Cassie have two versions of their nut punch brutalities. The regular version pops the head off and the EX version makes their opponents eyes pop out with the head still intact. It was a fun fact to me.

I get having a quarrel with the name if you're a big fan of the old brutalities. However from our conversations before release you seemed to have many other problems with brutalities. Even having a problem with the name is pretty ridiculous. Why would you have to convince yourself you are doing a fatality and not a brutality? And if that is the case, how do you differentiate between the two in your head? Your whole train of thought here is very confusing. You say the name doesn't matter then immediately after you say you imagine you are doing a fatality not a brutality... When really you should have said you imagine that brutalities are called fatalities. Because you are doing what the rest of the world calls a brutality, but you want it to be called something else. Its like...
Whenever I eat cotton candy I imagine I'm eating fluffy tastiness. Cotton candy should be called fluffy tastiness, because its not cotton and it isn't really candy either.
I'm trying to understand where your coming from but it's not making much sense.
