Just curious, how do YOU decide who you're going to main in any fighting game? A lot of people go for their old standbys, some go for the new and exciting character, and some go for better overall matchup possibilities. I take a slightly different route.

I'm a member of multiple forums, and I look for the most hated or disliked characters. The ones that people say have the least potential or are broken somehow. I'll pick a character or two based off of that info, and try to main them.

My rationale is this; get good with a fighter that no one wants to use or even fight against because they don't like them. In doing so, you learn the nuances of a character that they're not too familiar with, which can possibly confuse them since they're not used to that characters moves or abilities. It can create some infuriating match ups! Lol.

What are your thoughts on how you pick a main?

Character loyalist.

I usually find Kung Lao and Kitana fun in every game, but I never cared for Kung Lao like I do Liu Kang, and I dislike what they've done to Kitana recently, so I could never main them.

The character has to be fun to use for me. I don't care if they're High/Low tier. Or if they're the Hardest/Easiest character to use. Or if they are the most liked/hated character in the game. As long as I enjoy using them, I will continue to use them.

It starts with character loyalty. But eventually I take every character to the lab, and if something clicks, so be it.

Well...

For each person it's different of course, for me I main characters I like if I don't like the character I don't play as him it doesn't matter how good the character is. It's all about fun for me, I want to have fun playing the game even if I lose.

Now since I like a couple of characters in MKX just like I liked a couple of characters in MK9, here is how I go about it.

First I look if Sektor is in the roster, he isn't then I go for my second favourite Quan Chi, and since he is in I'm happy, there are also Kenshi,Kung Lao,Kung Jin and Sonya Blade, those are characters I like, so I'll be trying out those and I'll most likely be maining all of them.

But I won't be able to decide who is my first main until I try them, if Sektor was in however, I would have known by now :p.

I have a feeling it'll be Kung Jin who I'll be using a lot just because I love archery, it's like the best thing ever.

by the way, there is a difference between least potential and broken.

Broken characters are used A LOT, characters like Cyrax in MK9.

Least potential are characters who don't get used much because you can't cheat with them, and they are not that great, meaning they lack a lot of things like Sheeva in MK9.

There's 2 factors for me.

Do I like the character themselves?

If I don't like the character all that much, I probably try them later rather than sooner. I like Kotal Kahn. His character is awesome. The people's champion. I'm going to try him out day one. I love Jason, I'm going to get Jason.

Flashiness

Wit this, it's how good I look kicking your ass. I never really was fond of Solomon Grundy, but when I played him down the line in Injustice, I played him a lot after I mastered his combos. Zod is another good example. All his EX moves are pure sex, along with his throw. Right now, Takeda fits the bill. Other contenders are Shinnok and Tremor.

I always main Sonya, she was the first character I used in the series so I have become loyal.

If she isn't in the game I main Scorpion, Mileena or Cyrax, again, because they were among the first I played.

THIS. THIS ALL THE WAY!

I happen to do this unconsciously. As I'm parsing over the select screen, I look at characters that don't have much of an online presence and try them out. If I jive with them (which I often do, for some reason), I use them regularly. Your opponent's ignorance is a very, very powerful weapon.

But when a game/character is still fresh and new, I tend to gravitate toward magic-themed zoning characters. I'm popping a massive gameplay boner for Shinnok right now, especially knowing he has Shang Tsung's skullfuckery and some form of move imitation. But even if he didn't have those things, he's still a magic character and you KNOW he'll have some fabulously entertaining zoning trickery up his sleeve. I'm eyeing Tanya for the same reason. I hope they flesh out her magical KSAs that have been hinted at in the past in at least one variation.

I always learn how to play with every figther, even I try with those that i didn ́t found interesting. If I go for competitive play, i like to have good match ups and that kind of stuff, but my main is always my favorite character.

if another character is good but i don ́t like it like Zod in Injustice i try not to play as him even if I kick asses with the character.

For me, playing as the character that i most like, is the best way to have Fun and thats what a game is all about

For me it's a combination of character loyalty and playstyle.

Like I'll always main Kung Lao no matter what. Don't care how he plays, what he looks like, what tier he is, or how many people use him. And that's how it is for any of my favorite characters.

For new people it usually hinges on playstyle. Cassie is Rushdown which suits me best so that's why I'm maining her. Erron Black on the other hand, will most likely be heavily zoning. Which isn't my style but his design looks awesome so I want to play him.

Character favorite, if he isn't good enough, play him good enough to win.

I have "tiers of favoritism" instead of closed rankings and some characters might jump from one to another depending on development and how cool they are.

Starts with loyalism and who I like. I need to like the actual character if im going to spend that much time with and "main" him/her. Tier is pretty irrelevant to me, Scorpion could literally be the worst character in the game gameplay wise and he will still be one of my mains.

As I have said before, its going to be a bitch trying to narrow my mains down to just 2 or 3 in this game lol so many characters I want to play as and become good with.

Its more of character loyalty for me but NRS left my Frost out of the main roster yet again...

and they took out my most used character from MK9: Jade...

hmmm...and giving her moves to Kitana...feels wrong somehow...

guess I'll have to pick whoever works for me nextsad

Although I'm leaning towards characters who punch people in the crotch...that always gives me a chuckle grin

Who ever I have the most fun playing with. For MK9 it was Smoke. He was pretty easy to use and fun to play with.

Baraka no matter what. No clue what I'm going to do if he doesn't make it in. Quan Chi, Predator, Jason, or Tremor I guess. Either that or not play at all.

This. Even if (for some god awful reason) I don't take to his gameplay, Reptile will be the main one I'll continuously try to work it out.

Everyone else will definitely get a handful of decent run thoughs no matter what. Whoever sticks, sticks. Whoever doesn't, collects dust. At least I will be able to say I tried.

It's a mix of who tends not to be used all that often (never an issue as I always love the underdog)

Whoever aesthetically pleases me and has a great character,
And finally whoever fits in with my play style

I wanted to main sheeva in mk9 and although I got ok with her I was much better with kitana so she became my.main
In injustice I tried to main catwoman but when that didn't work out I moved to batgirl And deathstroke

I'm hoping Tanya will be my main this time around, and maybe erron black

But i wouldn't mind mileena or kitana

I would never main scorpion or sub zero out of principle
They get enough love they don't need me

It is always my favorite character period!!If for some reason Quan didn't make it in,I would go down my list of favs(which means I'd be using Shinnok since Shang T isn't in...yet).I also don't care about tier,Quan is fun for me win or lose.I try to make sure my Quan Fu is NO joke though.(sorry Shaq lol)
