I just realized just how much of the roster is made up of Special Forces affiliated characters: Sonya, Johnny, Jax, Kenshi, Cassie and Jacqui, and going off of the trailer apparently Takeda and Kung Jin as well.

Eight freaking characters. That means literally one third of the roster is made up of Special Forces characters. I at least always figured Kung Jin would be White Lotus but I don't think that is the case based on the story trailer.

As far as I can figure things up there are only three 'good guys' on the roster who are not Special Forces: Raiden, Kung Lao and Kitana. I'm not entirely sure Kitana will be a 'good guy' in this game, either because of Liu Kang's ambiguous affiliation at this point. That is why I didn't include him at all in the list of good guys.

Doesn't it seem a little boring and like too much of one particular element that almost all of the good guys on the roster are Special Forces? And most of the villains are Kotal Kahn's henchmen with the exceptions of Quan Chi, Shinnok and Mileena.

I dunno. It's just...it's like this game is actually smaller in scope than I was expecting. At least the roster of playable characters is. I mean, I thought we were covering three main conflicts over a 25 year period: the Netherrealm War, the Outworld Civil War and then the conflict with whoever the big bad ultimately turns out to be.

I guess maybe story mode will be filled with lots of cameos and supporting roles by NPC's in order to flesh out the narrative but damn...I have to admit this roster seems very lacking in diversity to me somehow. It's not bad, I like the new characters, I'm glad to see staples like Kung Lao, Kitana and Johnny back...but yeah. It could use a little more diversity in terms of playable characters.

There does seem to be a definite imbalance in terms of faction representation in this game. And no, I'm not talking about factions in regard to the online portion of MKX but of who the characters actually represent. I'm under the impression that both the Brotherhood of Shadow along with Mileena's followers will primarily be the antagonistic forces in this game. They aren't really represented well are they? No obvious punching bags, or no real obvious threats outside of Quan Chi for the BoS.

It's somewhat intriguing/confusing.

Well yes and no for many reasons. You have the Black Dragon feud with the Special Forces but varies off of this when the netherrealm war against the White Lotus, Lin Kuei team up against the Brother Hood Of Shadow.

Is this a rant, or you looking for a discussion?(rhetorical question)

You could of added this to the many other threads talking about it.

Whole roster isnt revealed, and for story purposes more special forces makes sense realistically, as this isn't about a tournament, its about interrealm relations and such.

This.

Where the heck are Mileena and Quan Chi/Shinnok's henchmen? There seem to be none on the roster. Only Kotal Kahn's goons are present.

I guess Quan Chi will be using revenants(like Sindel, shown in the trailer) and maybe Mileena's people will only appear as NPCs(like Rain). That is pretty lame.

I think you're behind the curve here. We know the roster now. We don't know DLC but we know the launch roster. The JamesMK leak was apparently right.

But... But... I thought this is Mortal Kombat :'(.

I wonder why isn't it about the tournament anymore? It always seems like MK games stop being about tournaments after the trilogy era, I guess you could count MK4 as a "tournament".

It does seem focused on the Special Forces characters, and if you had told me this 2 years ago I would have probably been a little frustrated since I have never cared for the SF related characters, but im really not bothered by it since there are plenty of other characters in the game. I do share the opinion that the other "factions" seem pretty underrepresented besides Kotal's Kabal (See what I did there?)

Shouldn't Kung Jin be White Lotus? And shouldn't Takeda be Shirai Ryu?

Where is an ally of Mileena's on the roster like say, Reiko?

No Brotherhood of Shadow people other than Quan Chi/Shinnok themselves? Well, I guess that at least makes a LITTLE more sense seeing as they will have revenants...

But yeah. Over half the roster is either Special Forces or Kotal's gang with a few other people like Raiden, Kitana and Kung Lao thrown in.

I hope you're right but I'm not getting my hopes up, you know? There is nothing to indicate there will be more there at launch.

And thanks. lol. That is a picture Zack Snyder released of Jared Leto after he got his hair cut and beard shaved for the part of the Joker. I took the picture and used MS paint to make a little mock-up of him as the Frank Miller/Dark Knight Returns Joker.

What makes you think Kitana's going to completely suck up to her Liu Liu? She could still be good without siding with Earthrealm or at least neutral.

I Thought that a lack of baddies was evident too and got my hopes but then someone explained to me what they will do so the story picks up right after MK9 well that left us with kitana, Jax and Kung Lao all dead and in control of quan chi so at the start of this game when we play the netherrealm war part guess who the bad guys/punching bags will be for cage and Sonya chapters ...................... That's right undead Jax, Kitana and Kung Lao then they will come back to human and probably have their own chapters fighting against some of the outworld goons!!!

I am so very disappointed with this roster and still hope it's not true but it looks more and more likely each passing day

Liu Kang was the one who got her to join the good side to begin with and judging from the pre-fight dialogues, I don't think she's going to be friendly to Cassie or her cohorts at all.

Wait, what makes you think Kung Jin is special forces? Is it his completely non-military wardrobe, or his dialog asking Cassie why she's in charge??? Okay, that's a bit snarky but my guess is Kung Jin is a part of that 4-person team by circumstance. Not sure if he's white lotus, but he doesn't appear to be a natural part of the SF.

Anyway, I agree, I was hoping for a little more diversity of characters, especially villains. There's always DLC I guess.

YEP. It seems like everyone forgets this when they automatically lump those guys (and Scorpion) in with the heroes. And the Special Forces guys are split up between two generations. Intro dialogues indicate even more shifting alignments.
