Going into the past looks like it was pointless. (Spoilers... Duh)

It seems like a lot of the events Raiden was trying to prevent by going back in time are still occurring. Shinnok and Quan Chi rose to power. Raiden is evil again.. Which kinda lost me at the end. Also, I don't know why he speaks to Revenant Liu and Kitana like they're friends now but whatever. My point is it looks like time is immutable after all. And apocalypse may yet occur despite Raidens efforts except now we have even worse circumstances. Liu, Kitana and Kung are dead.

Also why does Ed hate the idea of a Liu and Kitana relationship, anyway?

He isn't speaking to them like friends. He is speaking to them as a warning. Not to fuck with Earth Realm. They now rule the NetherRealm which Raiden knows is a possible danger
I don't think Boon hates Liu Kang, I just think he wants to do something different for a few games before having Liu come back as a hero. He won the MK1 and MK2 tournaments in MK2011 after sitting out from the hero role for three games, so they probably want to do another game without him in the hero role to keep things different.

So we all know now the next game will be a remake of deception with a twist since this game was a MK4 - MkDA type of rewrite.
