Rather than alternating between a fighting game and an action/adventure game, I believe Midway's wisest choice would be to combine both -- a masterful fighting engine, cutting-edge graphics, a gritty, somewhat brutal story, and a simply amazing Konquest mode.
On one hand, the traditionals -- Arcade, Versus. Develop those into quite literally the best engine in the fighting game market. One fighting style, one weapon. Very effective, expertly developed, fast and brutal.
And the Konquest -- imagine Shaolin Monks (improved, flaws overcome, of course), with each playable character in the game having their own ten-plus hours of adventure.
With these two "distinct" primary modes (Versus falling under Arcade), combined with next-generation systems, could make for a truly breath-taking experience, that would, to use the phrase, blow all competition out of the water.

Whoa... That Is Truly An Amazing Idea!!. I Believe They Should Have A Mixed Game Also. One When You Have They Free Walk-Around Of Konquest But The Arcade Of Say Older Games At Once. Like I You Walked Up To A Character And They Fought You Or Helped You On Your Quest. Kinda Like A Big Version Of Konquest On MK:Deception

out of ninjas, cyborg thugs, evil ninja robots, martial artists, martial artists with sharp hats, princesses, bodyguards with more than 4 limbs, undead movie stars, native american shamans, evil emporrers, gods and secret service agents, you say Stryker didn't fit in MK3?

how about using 'Enter the Matrix' as inspiration. remember how you could easily go from a third person angle to a fighting game style side angle without pressing anything? what if MK used that so you could run around third person and fight people with the MK engine in the blink of an eye? you could even fight multiple people at once (allowing multalities). that would be soooo awesome
Now that MK has had fully 3D renders for a while, it's time to make a MK v.s. KI (Killer Instinct) game. In the Marvel v.s. Capcom tag team style of course. Just imagine the teams you could come up with: Liu Kang/Jago, Nightwolf/Thunder, Jax/Combo, Baraka/Fulgore, Sub-Zero/Glacius, Sonya/Orchid, Blaze/Cinder, Moloch/Eyedol, etc.

THEY SHOULD PUT IN CREATE-A-CHARACTER
Step 1:
Throw out sidegames completely. The space should be used for engine material. Prferably for a good one, and not for graphics!
Step 2:
Okay, now add a Konquest, however, have it like the mixture of MKDA and MKD. You run around and stuff, but fighting should be in the MKDA system.
Step 3:
Add one sidegame into the left space: preferably chess. Puzzle has been done before, and car racing would be stupid IMO.
Step 4:
Test the game. If it's not working at least on basis soil, reboot the whole project. Midway, you have time.

Have cinematic scenes that describe what is happening in a characters story. I hope to see three videos each, an intro, a middle, and an ending video.
Include destroyable objects in mortal kombat such as walls, and actually have stuff fall off of them to turn into weapons. In Deception the enviorments were interactive, but imagine using the entire arena as your weapon. Throwing people through walls as many times as you want and such.
Give characters extra abilities such as wall jumping and diving moves to spicen up the game play. Imagine diving out of the way of a projectile and at the same time picking up a metal pipe on the floor. Side stepping is nice and rolling could be the next level of that.
Add a counter system, for example low punch counters counter low punches, it could really mess a person up trying to do combos and such. If in a combo, a player would have to guess three button combinations in the enemies combo to counter there attack. Also, there would be counter attacks to already existing counter attacks.
