i think there will be a quite a large number of returning characters...about half of the roster from MK:A i am expecting. there were 64 characters in MK:A so i figure 32 returning and maybe 2 or 3 new characters. i do think that the main roster will not be intact on game launch however...i think that we will get maybe 26 and than get the remaining as DLC.

If you add Havik, Smoke and Taven our lists would match. I'm hoping for 6 to 8 new fighters aswell.(most likly with DC inspired moves ie. the Flashes speed ect)

All that matters is if Hsu Hao is back. He was the staple of MK.

It's nice to see someone else on my train of thought. Smoke is in my list but I believe it'll be a toss up between him, Sektor and Cyrax. I can't believe I forgot Havik. I'll add him to my list. As for Taven, MKA did him and Daegon no favours, imo. I doubt either of them will return in the near future. I like them both so wouldn't mind if they did but like others, they'd need serious work on their stories.

I noticed that a lot of you put Quan Chi on the list. I don't have a problem with anybody liking him, but I'm surprised to see so many people put him down as a realistic possibility. I'm assuming that his time is up, and he may sit this next game out.

I hope they have most of the MK1 and 2 roster. Plus Kenshi, and all new characters. It seems like most fighting franchises have a core group that will be in the next games. With MK it's kind of a coin toss. The only characters who will be in all of the games are Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Because of the randomness of MK it is hard to tell who will be in the next game. So honestly I can't really give an acurate guess. Will they bring back mostly old character? Or will they have a few classics, and mostly brand new? Nobody knows for sure. So at this point I'm going to guess as random as possible to match the MK team's decision, and say it will have 1/3 classics, 1/3 brand new, and 1/3 somewhere in the middle or end of the MK timeline. That's probably the best guess considering the randomness.

ed said that quan chi was ready to be played in mkvsdc they just did not put him in the game at the last minute. quan chi was the best post mkt fighter hands down, then kenshi..........

i think they may wait on some of the stories that are developing from MK:A having to do with Taven and that kind of direction. i would think they would want to address the whole Special forces and Tekunin ordeal and maybe finish up these clan wars once and for all. after all that is done i think MK can go into the more demi-gods and elder god direction. aside from that Mk always has the side story type characters on totally separate paths...i don't think that should change because neutral characters are usually good tools for future plots. i really do think that a handful of characters in MK9 are going to die to make way for other characters that were left out this go around.i can almost feel a big shock in story...perhaps the deaths of a few iconic characters.

It's likely we could see some characters die in the intro like Liu Kang did in MKDA. I'd hate to have to wait for a second new game to arrive on the scene to see who died in this next game due to the what if endings. As such, I think we could see the opposite of what you're suggesting. I think we may see the deaths of the missing characters who won't return ever again. If any of the cast for the next game are to die, I think those will be saved for the endings and a confirmation in the follow up game.

I think the next MK will continue the story of MK:A.Like you said we'll see exactly who dies.And MK:A could explain it good.

I don't know why people keep saying the next MK is going to be with totally new story and will start from scratch.This is not the truth.We don't have a clue on that MK going to be a reboot, so guys stick to the main story and don't give theories on something you don't know.Stick to MK:A story.

If it's a 25 character game, and half are new, 12 of these characters are the most likely to show up, as they always seem to be the fall back characters for the MK team.
