Fan designs vs. NRS
Can anyone tell me how fans can make these great characters designs, yet NRS seems to be very simplistic, to the point of laziness with their designs? Don't get me wrong, I think Reptile, Ermac, Mileena, Shinnok and others have their best designs yet, but some are very simplistic. Even if Baraka is in, what I doubt despite that leaked photo, that is a very simple design for a character with so much potential. Any artist could do wonders with a guy like him.
I mean, there is no denying these fan arts:
- cobra Reptile is awesome! So great that NRS artists even copied it! http://www.mortalkombatonline.com/content/fansub/Images/5405.jpg
- floating Ermac with hoody that even blew Boon away: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/b2/8b/d1/b28bd1068e357573e15606c166156c92.jpg
- Tremor: http://www.mortalkombatonline.com/content/fansub/Images/5824.jpg
- Smoke: http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/032/0/0/smoke___mortal_kombat_fan_art_by_fear_sas-d5th8xx.jpg
- Even found one for Baraka: http://th09.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2014/199/8/2/baraka_by_vvernacatola-d7r819z.jpg
So:
1) Do you think it is a lot harder to make some of these into actual characters, like with Reptile they showed the sketches and said they went with something more simple for technical reasons?
2) Is it that they don't want to change a character so much that they become unrecognisable?
3) Combination of both?
4) Any other?

Man... Fuck off already, all you do is shit on NRS in every post you make, why are you on this forum if you don't like MKX?

There's a lot of technical things to considering when it comes to 3D modeling. To get those awesome art like Smoke and Ermac in a lot of the flair would have to be removed. 3D models that are playable cannot have that many details.
And yeah, keeping the characters recognizable is also a big part of it. That Smoke and Ermac are way out there and don't fit the style and tone of any Mortal Kombat game.
There's character design for fun, and there's character design for proper modelisation and use in a video game environment.

A couple of those are professional, the Ermac image is from a designer who actually worked for NRS!! (I think the final Ermac design has arguably taken some influence from it).
The best of all those - imho - is the Reptile design. Very unique, love the hoodie which unfurls to look like a cobra.
Which designs are best all comes down to personal taste I guess, they are endlessly redesigned til a final look is approved. MK9 took an understandably more traditional approach with character design and MKX has knocked it out the park. Some - eg Kitana, - look the best they ever have.

They're all impressive but I think the Reptile one is the only one that really fits the tone of the series.

I agree on characters looking their best in MKX for Jax, Mileena, and Reptile. Unmasked Sub is pretty good too.

I agree the characters this time around all look their best for the most part.
My favorite design for Reptile was his Shaolin monks look but Reptile in MKX completely tops that one imo.

I think Sonya looks to be one of her better apperances along with her Shaolin Monks outfit, but Johnny's looking pretty boring.
Hey, at Least they finally gave up on the flailing/Giant shoulder pads!
Baraka has always looked ridiculous to me. The teeth need to be toned down a bit, that way his mouth can actually close. And I never understood why they keep dressing him in samurai armor or a karate gi. He Looks more savage with no shirt like his MKgold Look.

Glad too see my Reptile design was used for inspiration by NRS. I do like a majority of the design the dev team has come up with MKX , but there have been fan arts I've seen that are really awesome!

I wish it was actually in the game or they gave you some kind of shout-out for it, I liked that design for a long time.

I think Reptile's alt. looks better than his main in MKX, but that's just my opinion.

I can not stand negative forum threads. Diehard MK fans are so different than regular fighting game fans.
