I'm no MKX expert yet and I wanted to know what's some of you who are MKX experts' opinion on Sub-Zero and his variations.

I played very little of it and just tried the variations of him and I think only Cryomancer is a little better than others. Grandmaster cannot make ice clones in air or any other way than standing. Frozen aura of unbreakable cancels out only chip damage and provides no armor.

it just made me feel that even this time we agree not going to see any Sub Zero in any tournaments apart from TomBrady. feels like a low tier fighter.

He has a lot of low mix-ups, and he's very quick with his added free ice dashes. In the right hands, he can be pretty hard to deal with.

In mk9 imo Sub-zero was pretty high tier. From a personal experience i dominated with him.

now MKx grandmaster is my fav, and im still trying to figure out his playstyle and how best utilize him, but sadly i do not think Kuai is as good as he was in mk9.

I am by no means an expert, but thats just my 2 cents

I saw a sick ass set up with Sub-Zero the other day, dude had the other guy cornered, dropped an ice clone so he couldn't move forward without getting frozen, then he ex slid through the ice clone to the other side which launched the other guy right into the ice clone freezing him setting him up for another combo, pretty damn awesome :)

He was actually mid-to low tier in MK9. Still a good character without a doubt

He seems pretty solid in MKX imo, great damage, awesome setups, especially with grandmaster. Cryomancer gets a bit more damage for meter, and is more rushdown oriented. Unbreakable seems the worst out of the 3 imo

I've been playing Sub-Zero since release and even though I wouldn't call myself an expert or on par with the likes of Tom Brady and such, I have a decent Sub in MKX and have a win-loose ratio of about 140/20 in ranked.

I think Sub-Zero is finally a force to be reckoned with in MKX. A huge difference to his MK9 counterpart who was mid tier at best. Players like Pig Of The Hut and Brady have have acknowledged this as well.

For me, I played Cryomancer for the first two days. A very good rushdown variation with very damaging (meterless) combos. Down 4 to Ice Hammer from maximum distance all day, though it is very punishable if read. The EX Hammer pops up, has armor and gives you additional combo options. The air Hammer is kind of slow on startup and I haven't seen the use of it so far. F33 into EX Hammer combos as does B33 which gives you good mixup options. Overall, a very decent rushdown variation with emphasis on the EX Ice Hammer which is a very good tool. This variation also gives Sub additional combos.

His Unbreakable Variation seems to work very well on rushdown opponents for me. Examples are Ermac and Scorpion, mainly characters with great rushdown options and teleports. The Frozen Aura assures no chip damange for 10 seconds while the EX version also reduces damage from confirmed attacks by about 40% which is great. The Barrier of Frost stops projectiles and freezes all mid hitting moves on contact but doesn't work on overheads and air attacks. Again, a very decent variation against rushdown characters.

His best and most powerful variation, though, I have to say is Grandmaster. The Ice Clone is not to be messed with. You can D4 into clone all day and spam ice balls from behind it. Or you can move in and start mixing up your opponent. What is even better is you can F42 then cancel into Ice Clone which makes it 100% safe. Then there's the fact that you can throw it or shatter it with Ice Burst. A very good variation to make your opponent retreat to the corner and that is where Sub-Zero will murder any player. I don't think any other character can do what Sub-Zero can in the corner.

This was my two cents on him, summarized. He is my main and I have a feeling he will stay my main for a very long time. Definitely top tier.

That's really great to hear. Grandmaster seems so awesome, i played it in my gamestop tourney, and ice clones won me the day, i just gotta get more comfortable with his combo strings. No matter what tier he is i will always stick by my fav.

Personally, I didn't like Sub-Zero in MK9 too much. His freezing moves were too slow, and he just felt a bit sluggish to me, overall. So he wasn't my favorite to play with.

In MKX, that has changed. He still has a little bit of wind up time for his freeze blast, but he feels a lot faster and just a lot more 'free' to play as, so to speak.
I've only really dabbled in his Grandmaster variation, and a little bit in Cryomancer, but the Grandmaster one definitely takes the cake. The ice clone use in this game is amazing, not only for using it as a shield against projectiles, but also to throw at enemies. He's a lot of fun to play as, and I'll be using him a lot more than I used SZ in MK9.

How do you run? I dash before the end of the combo and can't make it

Yeah, it took me a while to figure it out too. You have to dash and then hold the button you use for enhanced moves. R2 on PS4, and... What is it called on X1? The R Trigger?

So far the most competitive one seems to be Grandmaster because of the corner traps and even if you can't air clone, both the throw and the shatter give you advantage on block.

Unbreakable can destroy zoners by blocking everything with no chip damage, then iceblastinf through a projectile (EX iceball eats projectiles). The it makes rushdown players think twice because of the parry and blocking.

Cryomancer is the variation that I'm really trying to figure out what can do that the others can't because I think is the coolest one but it doesn't have the strategic tools the others have. It does more combo damage and leaves them standing after combo for a reset without wakeup, but has a hardet time than the others reaching the point where you can make a combo. I'm testing the sword strings to see if I can add some tricks related to range by intentonally whiffing some moves, but for now it looks like the worst one even if I really want to play it.
