They have been recycling this rumor for 4 months now.

The smoke is thought to be seen as Kotal's Variation dummy.

The Ermac is the FanArt from the lead art director Beneteau

As much as I would like for them both to be MKX I think only Ermac will make the roster. Considering Ermac is still alive and Smoke is the Netherrealm as a slave to Quan Chi.

Yeah this rumor has been floating around for a good while.

I really hope Ermac makes it in, he is one of my favorites, I would like to see Smoke in as well if they redesign him, I hated his primary costume in MK2011. I also wouldn't mind seeing his cyber form, maybe as one of his variations.
