I don't know, I read it like different variations in terms of offensive buffs, defensive buffs, etc.
For instance, you're about to face a Zoner, you choose a defensive variance, and it makes you less susceptible to chip damage.
That's just how I'm reading it.

The fact we've got a Human Sub-Zero in the trailer, and they're telling us you can select a different "version" of each character's gameplay, makes it natural that people are going to indulge in crazy speculation and wonder things like "Well Cyber-Sub played different from Human Sub, what if that means both versions are in the game?"
What IF each different gameplay style DOES correspond to a costume?
And if every character in the game works this way, how would you incorporate this mechanic into Story Mode?
Well what if Raiden fucked things up so bad that they LITERALLY can't beat Shinnok, so the only way to survive is to unfuck some of what was fucked?
Or what about that mystery chick in Jade's ending? You KNOW they wouldn't create a new character like that unless they had an actual plan to give her a proper introduction later on...and she did seem interested in rewriting history.
And gee...the fanbase is kinda split on how the reboot turned out and it would pacify a lot of people if they could, say, have past versions of characters like Cyber-Smoke back for shits and giggles...
What if the end result is literally a story about Old Timeline characters crossing over with the New Timeline characters? Or shit, why stop there? That Scorpion's outfit looks awfully real-world, being all cloth and belts instead of cartoony bug armor, what if he's, like, from some Legacy-inspired alternate reality?
---
Now, there's a very, VERY good chance everything I just said is bullshit that the game has NOTHING to do with. I understand that completely and I'm sorry if this idea gets anyone hyped and the real game crushes their dreams of a Crisis on Infinite Earthrealms.
But it doesn't hurt to imagine what could be.

About Me
As Mr. Sloan always says, there is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "I" in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team... I don't know what he's talking about.

It could be a really cool part of the story, if done correctly. Bi-Han Sun-Zero vs Bi-Han Noob. Coming face to face... in some sort of time paradox..

You know what? This is a great post. I agree with everything you said. It certainly can't be ruled out. This would be a considerable amount of effort and work involved, which is possibly the only stumbling block I could see.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy had multiple versions of characters too
Locking play styles to costumes isn't a good idea, imo....I want to have the choice...
I'm thinking it'll be purely a gameplay thing...My first thought was the different grooves in CapcomVsSNK for example...Maybe we'll have options of Meter Styles that have different uses? Different options of Supers/X-Ray ala SF?
I find the idea intriguing, hopefully we get to see what it's about at E3.

I think people are reading too far into this.
I'm guessing this is just going to be something like the difference between choosing "Scrapper" Scorpion and "Bruiser" Scorpion. Some sort of difference in their balance and play, and possibly a different X-Ray move or something... that creates a strategic alteration, but isn't an entirely different and completely fleshed out separate character.
Some of the suggestions I've seen people post are just way too lame a stretch. Many of them amount to "X Character" and "X Character with his mask off" and "X Character in a slightly different costume" ... there's no need for it.

While that does sound cool, I don't think they are gonna turn MK into Marvel Avengers Alliance.

With any luck, this means they found a way to give Motaro his ass back.

Or Shang Tsung might be able to morph into anyone of the playable fighters? I have my doubts on getting to play a particular character with MK Deception or MK2 moves. Most characters move set would just suck ass entirely or they wouldn't change much at all. Early MK repetitive face punch would be cool though.

its probably a difference in a character being a brawler or a grappler stuff like that.

That is what crossed my mind when they mentioned those different iterations of each character:
Liu Kang:
His normal self
or the Fire God he turned into in his ending
Smoke:
His normal self
or enenra Smoke
Jade:
Her normal self
or posessed by the lady in her ending
Ashrah:
Her normal self
or her demonic form before she was purified by the Kriss. Something like this
Sareena:
Something similar to Ashrah. Like showcase the struggle between her human and demonic form
Something like that. At least that's what I got out of it. Given that the 2 different forms of each character have some different attributes to their playstyle of course. For example you can choose the human form of Rain whose fighting style is more aggressive or choose one where he turns most of his body into water that leads into a more defensive and parry-ish fighting style. Sth like his sketches from the game:
If they don't have a different fighting style and moves, then might as well add those alt forms of each character in their alt costumes. Otherwise there is no reason for all that.

Interesting! If i did not fear being called crazy i'd say that: Depending on which part of the story or which level you might have achieved with a particular character, this all might have an impact on his/her skills or behaviour? Or not.
Or this is a + to which costume you would choose to play with.
Pretty intriguing but a little like other fighters, depending on which mode we'll be playing the game, characters strenghts would vary or so?
No matter what it turns out to be, an all out innovation or simply a "Gain points, gain skills" type of thing, i wish the gameplay doesn't result into suffering from this!
Or, just a switch from Offensive/Defensive strategies in the select character screen?
