Just based on who's left of the MK2011 roster:
(in order most likely to reappear)
Quan-Chi
Reptile
Mileena
Kenshi
Ermac
Cyrax
Sektor
Baraka
This does not include post-MK4 characters such as Fujin, Tanya, Reiko etc. who I would have replace Baraka (we can always gets a new Tarkatan), Mileena and one of the Cyborgs (most likely Cyrax as I think Sektor is more likely to survive after Cyrax "malfunctions")
Hello. Not sure if this has been brought up, but based on the current roster seen in the Kano trailer, the classic characters appear to be on top whereas the new ones are on the bottom. There are 16 blank slates left (8 on the top, 8 on the bottom) so I wonder if this will help narrow down the list for returning characters.

I'd easily trade in Cyrax and Sektor for Tanya & Fujin.

Sounds like it may very well actually be that way.
With this limited space, I'm kind of pissed about Kano now. If literally half of the cast is new characters, that makes returning spots all the more precious. He damn well better have some relevance and development in story mode and not be just another random goon serving the big bad.
Sucks, I at least wanted 28-30, the same as MK9. But considering the additions of variations, I guess I can see why they want to keep things smaller and more balanced.
As far as Kano I'm not pissed, he looks too awesome for me to be pissed. I am upset though that the little returning characters we get will mostly be made up of the usual suspects I guess you can say.
Sex is Evil, Evil is Sin, Sin is forgiven, so Sex is in.

Props to MINION for making this sig.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. There will be a 3rd Row with 6 more characters and slots for 6 DLC Characters
Yeah I'm very skeptical of the idea that it will ship with only 24 playable characters. And didn't Boon say to, "pay attention to the spaces between the character slots" on the select screen? It's possible the game could have unlockable characters who don't initially have a slot on the select screen, like Quan Chi in MK9.

I highly doubt it. People were saying the exact same thing about another game this year and how there would definitely be another row of characters...well I definitely got disappointed. I will not go through this again with MKX.
It'll be 24 characters at most until official confirmation. Anything else is speculation.
As for this 'x' classic-'x' new speculation, I really don't care. Only time will tell.
Whateva, man.
I'm tired of re-posting this link, but Ed did say to Polygon that the roster "will [be] at least as big as the last Mortal Kombat — which shipped with nearly 30 fighters — and that "obviously" downloadable characters will follow."

THANK YOU! I knew he had said some things to indicate the initial roster will be more than just 24 playable characters.

Shit, that article should be made into a sticky at the top of this page.
Still not believing it until the select screen reflects that.
Why would he lie about such a thing in an official interview tho? I mean of course it's Boon, he likes to troll with us but this wasn't twitter. Interviews like those are supposed to promote the game to the public so that the customer knows what they're buying.
If a developer gives false information about their game and they end up offering less that what they initially promised, it would essentially cause an uproar wouldn't it? I can't be the only one thinking it would be a major fuck you to the fans of the franchise.

Things change over time. People seriously need to stop believing shit that even the developers say these days. Wait until you see the evidence for yourself.

Well, I'm sure we'll get more clarification tomorrow when MK Dan and Kombat Tether ask some questions. A simple "Will the game ship with more than 24 characters?" Doesn't spoil ANYTHING. It actually makes for more speculation and hype in terms of the reveals.
I hope they actually ask that question.

Ed wasn't talking about the placement of the characters in the final product, he was talking about the placement of the characters in the picture that this twitter post corresponds to. I know I'm not the only one who speaks Ed Boon here.
Do you guys really think that he would have given away the remaining amount of returning and new characters that easily. C'mon guys! We're much smarter than this.

No, I'm smarter than to be getting my hopes up only to have them shot down like a pig in a slaughterhouse.
There will be only 24 characters with MAYBE 1 secret unlockable. Unless a new select screen with more spaces is produced- I'm not budging.
That said, if there are only 12 new, and 12 returning characters, i'm hoping for:
Scorpion
Sub-Zero
Raiden
Kano
Sonya
Johnny Cage
Liu Kang
Cyrax
Kenshi
Tanya
Shinnok
Reptile

Honestly, everything is pure speculation. They're already neck deep into the production of this game and already have probably every fighter being worked on as we speak so unless Boon has a reason to lie, which I wouldn't suspect that he has a reason to, I'd more or less side with him but still... the point is, there's no concrete evidence that the game is going to ship with only 24 characters and there's also no concrete evidence that there will be more than that. It's he said/she said until we get into 2015 when the product is close to being finished so there's no point going back and forth about it.
Numbers aside though, if members of the MK team are saying equal to or more than the roster of MK9, that's what I'm going with.
