baraka is a great character. no question about it. anyone who says otherwise ought to be reminded that he was playable in both Shaolin Monks (which had 8 playable characters) and MKvsDC (which had 10 playable mk characters). he's right up there in popularity with scorpion, sub-zero, raiden, sonya, kitana, etc. hell, even reptile wasnt in MKvsDC.

Being a great character doesn't have crap to do with popularity and vice verse.

There's a lot of shitty characters who are popular and a lot of great ones who are not, especially in MK.

Well, just look at Stryker. He was considered one of the strongest, top-tier fighters of MK3, but he was just unpopular, while every candy-colored ninja was popular regardless of how they played (or even if they were a straight-up clone like Classic Smoke).

I hate how people say Sheeva & baraka suck without giving good reasons

What they say: He/She sucks because they have bad
Moves and are low tier. And the tournament players say they suck and the tournament players are always right, derp.

What they mean: I don't know how to play them because they have moves completely different from the rest of the cast, no slides, bombs, tele-punches, easily spammable moves, dive kicks, moves that freeze/stun. I don't know how to adapt to complete change so the only way to hide my failure is to say that they aren't worth my time and try to convince others the same.

What I think: they are one of my best tag teams, baraka's up first to do a lot of quick damage before I either swap in Sheeva or let him die. He has some awesome X-ray combos and confusing people by spacing his charge and his projectile is effective. Sheeva has a lot of good mind tricks and damaging combos, and it easy to keep people floored with her.

That being said, Jax literally takes the best parts from the two and then some. Seriously he does exactly that, look at his moves and combos.

Sheeva is the hottest chick in MK9, Mileena is a close second.

Fair. I personally don't find her attractive, but I'm not saying she's ugly from a personal perspective. The vast majority of complaints I see thrown her way are that she's hideous and freaky, though.

Honestly, I think Sheeva has a fantastic look... Yes, I also hate the red V of doom, but I think she is one of the only female characters that is justified in being so naked(because the males in her race also wear no clothes).

I think she looks much better slim than beefy, and her vaguely feminine facial features are perfect. To me she is slinky, and actually kind of beautiful in that freaky kind of way. I think she pulls off four arms much better than Goro or Kintaro who come off as just big beefy brutes(generic as it gets), while Sheeva is completely unexpected. To me, despite being derived from an existing religious figure, Sheeva is one of the most original designs in MK.

It is this uniqueness that makes Sheeva polarizing. Goro and Kintaro are big beefy brutes, so they fill a role we expect. The rainbow ninjas are an example of what every single entertainment medium in the known world suffers from, fans who refuse to accept change(and technical limitations... But that isn't why these characters are so popular). Sheeva breaks this rule by not being exactly what is expected, which to me is why she was cast aside by so many fans. She was too foreign for the fanboys, but for a weirdo like myself, she's just right.

I enjoy Baraka as a single player...but tagged with Sheeva...maybe the original poster is referring to the Challenge Tower.

I'm having a difficult time fighting with this duo. I also have a touch more respect for Sheeva since I basically spammed my way through Goro near the end of the Challenge Tower. Hehehe.

I haven't played as either character in the new game yet, so I can't comment on that. When it comes to other games, I didn't really care for Sheeva's gameplay style that much. Baraka, on the other hand, is fun for me to play, especially in Mortal Kombat Trilogy. When it comes to their stories, there really isn't much that they have going for them, especially in this new game. With Sheeva, she does have more potential than Baraka, imo.

The problem with Baraka is not just his story. It's also his character. Aesthetically, he's appealing to most people, because he's a vicious, bloodthirsty monster from another world and has long, sharp blades that come out of his forearms. As a character, he's very 1-dimensional, and he doesn't have many real dynamics.

Another problem is that all of the other Tarkatans seem to be exactly like Baraka. At least amongst the Shokan characters, you have certain dynamics here and there. However, with Baraka and his people, they are merely token evil henchmen characters. Essentially, he can be replaced with more interesting villains.

Going back to Sheeva, I just never found her that appealing. To be fair, she could have developed into something a bit more and could be interesting, but I guess it's the overall package of the character that I didn't care for. I don't know...Perhaps if they do a lot better with her, she could grow on me. Still, she's kind of better than Baraka in terms of potential and all that.

Like them both, Sheeva is one of my favs personally... and is the only viable way for a shokan to work in gameplay, and low tier? you gotta be kiddin me cause after her buff patch she's quite the beast with her damage output for only stringing four moves...

I kind of liked Baraka, but only in MK vs DC, he became a character I wanted to play as... (granted he was fun to use in Shaolin Monks aswell...)

And his mk9 gameplay is quite similiar... too bad the outfit didn't return though, kind of hating his primary though the alterenate costume with p2 color scheme works as a good replacement... he's also moved quite up after his buff :)
