Why didn't they use these designs? Were they trying to keep the designs as terrible as possible? This guy is amazing. The MK1 redesigns in particular are incredible.
It's a shame he's left the team.

Well, my question was only concerning Raiden, but, I do agree with your post about Johnny and (a bit) about Kano.
I think Reptile and Raiden are perfect, though.
I guess I will agree to disagree.
I just can't understand why some of these designs (some who strongly resemble classic and new MK9 looks/designs already) are so unfitting for you.
I get what you mean with the whole "movies-feel" and "realistic" stuff, but, Scorpion, Subby, Raiden, Reptile, Mileena, Cyrax, Nightwolf and Kano all look like something we've already seen or like something that screams "MK", imo. Honestly, some of those looks already (closely) resemble their old costumes and even new ones.
The only totally unfitting ones are Sonya, Johnny Cage, and just a little bit of Kano. Just my opinion, but, I still respect what you think.

His clothes also seem too "baggy". No offense, but if anything, this Raiden design is VERY over done.
Like I said in a previous post, I'd actually love to see most of these used in an MK movie if they ever decided to do one. But still, these designs don't feel fitting for an MK game in my opinion.

It's just the feel to it.
Johnny Cage and Kano both look like Street Fighter concepts.
Raiden looks like he belongs in Soul Caliber.
Reptile looks to scrawny and Fantasy-like to be in MK.
Those are a couple right off the top of my head.
Too put it bluntly, they're too intricate and imaginative for MK.

Yeah, but that isn't what MK is now. Yes, if they had kept that kind of "realistic" look in MK games and kept it consistent, these concepts would probably work, but they didn't.
These designs simply would not fit in to MK at this point. They could have used these considering MK9 is a reboot. They could have rebooted the entire look of the MK world with this game but they didn't.
These designs look more like something you would see in a movie or even in future seasons of MK: Legacy. They seriously just don't fit in with the current MK9 look. Except for Cyrax and *maybe* Mileena. Those are the only ones I could actually see being used in MK9.

I'll agree that Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Nightwolf, Kano and Cyrax's designs look classic and similar to costumes used in MK games, but there are things about them that stray too far away from their original looks. For example:
Kano's laser eye in this design looks over done. Kano's eye has never looked like that, nor did it need to look that "detailed". He also has a huge sword on his back that he's never had or needed to use, with a gun and holster on his left hip. For what he would ever need these things for, I have no clue. Kano's more of a hand to hand fighter. The only weapon he ever uses are his knives.
Raiden... I don't even wanna get started on his hat. it's obviously way too big. I mean seriously, yeah, Raiden has a big hat, but that hat is just too much. He doesn't need a hat that big. In my opinion, that doesn't even look right on him. Raiden has never worn attire that baggy and loose before. Raiden attire in most of the MK games were more fitted and simple. Another thing is that he isn't holding a staff, instead he has a bejeweled dagger slipped under his belt. Something he's never had or used before.
Reptile. Now while I can admit, this design pretty much does look a tad similar to his MK9 look, it still doesn't fit in with the game. His body is the main problem. Like someone said before, he looks too scrawny. That Reptile looks like he has some pretty long arms and legs. He also has a spear. This design could work for the game honestly, his body just needs to be redesigned.
Now the only ones I can't pick on are Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Mileena and Cyrax. While I still think they'd be more fitting looks for a movie, there's honestly nothing wrong with them.
The main thing is that the design, or more so, the art style used for them is not at all the style used in MK9. Excluding Cryax.
You can easily tell that they took elements from that design and used them in the game. Same goes for the first Sub-Zero style You can tell they used his belt and arm plates on Sub-Zero's primary in this game.
But again, these designs are of a completely different art style. These don't look like designs you'd see in MK9. Maybe some concepts from these designs incorporated in the game, yes, but the *entire* design? No. It just doesn't work in my opinion.

Ages ago I said one path they could have taken Johnny Cage is the same as Mickey O' Rourke:
A handsome, successful, talented actor who then fucks up his looks by becoming a professional fighter, but the trouble was Who other than Brock Lesnar could fuck up Cage's looks worse than Goro could.
But great minds think a like.
The rest of these designs are awesome looking.
Nightwolf looks a bit restrained compared to the others though.

The Reptile is my favorite. I wish he was green though instead of pale. And that weapon is kinda weird. Reptile should stick with the acid and the force balls.

I think Raiden's concept art looks like something Ashrah would wear. It doesn't fit Raiden... and the oversized hat just looks ridiculous. I don't like it at all.
Damn no Kitana?
That Mileena costume is fucking awesome. Why didnt she actually get that costume? Way better than anything she has ever had. Its also more on the realistic side and less on the fantasy slut side, which is nice for a change. It Would have been cool to see what Kitana and Jade's costumes would have looked like.

I guess that's true, but Raiden never wore a hat the size before. He's also not a Japanese Samurai, he's a God.

Except that they did, and you see a lot of the concepts in these carried over into the looks characters have now.

Sub-Zero, Nightwolf, and Cyrax look pretty good. Mileena is meh but interesting to note she still has the fucked up eyes that a lot of you don't seem to like.
Don't like Reptile or Cage at all. Cage's "kill" and "fuck" knuckle tattoos are way over the top. For a revamped Kobra, they might work.
So yeah, mixed bag. The art itself is good but I think this guy's character designs are pretty overrated by MK fans...and that goes for his original MK1 batch too.

Check out big trouble in little china. Raiden's original design was inspired by the movie one of them even had lightning powers.

^^ completely agree
When i saw Johnny Cage the first thing that popped into my head was "whats up with his tekken themed hair?"
The concepts have johnny cage and Kano fighting barefoot ...NO.
Also I absolutely HATE the Mileena concept , its just AWFUL in my opinion. If that thing was in game , i would not play as her until I had access to her alternate lol . petty ... yes but that thing is grotesque.
AND honestly it looks like this look inspired Skarletts costume in ways, but hers looks far better.
I dont understand Sonyas look at all . But besides that they're all cool looking. Just not for the game YIKES.

I'm guessing Sonya's look here is supposed to be a redesign of her MK1 costume.
Loved the MK1 designs. Still do. These new ones, however....with the exception of Mileena, who looks gorgeous, I'm glad were passed on. There'd be complaints about Reptile looking like a mutant frog, and Cage...well...Cage just makes me laugh.
