First character re-design where I can honestly say, I don't like it. Not that she pretty much looks like Nina Williams, she also also looks, and I agree with anyone who said it before, like a hooker.

I prefer her Deadly Alliance and Shaolin Monks designs, way over this overly slutted up one.

On an interesting note regarding Miss Mortal Kombat: I heard that Hector revealed Sonya in the Brazilian game show event. Apparently, he showed off Jax's Fatality and then said that if you want to see Sonya's you would have to buy the game (source: a comment posted by a Brazilian guy in a youtube video showing off some gameplay footage from the show in Brazil).

You can't just simply ask me to "not multi-quote like that again" when I'm obviously quoting specifics that I am responding to and discussing about. I'm not quoting for the sake of quoting, nor am I quoting "full posts" like, say, Pred's huge post/rant. I actually edit very big quotes in order to respond to the specifics I'm writing about.

I feel like you are pretty much telling me not to respond to all the things I want to respond / not to write down all of my opinions and just select "a few posts" to make it easier for you to scroll down. My replies are elaborated and tend to be longer than other usual replies, but, that's not against the rules and I don't think its negative either.

What am I supposed to do if I want to answer, say, specifics from Pred's recent post? I'm bound to quote the highlights that I feel I have to respond back to (but yeah, I won't quote the whole thing, that's for sure). And besides Pred's post there's already other posts I want to address and considering I can't multi post, I edit everything that's important into one big post full of well selected quotes. You can also see I'm not quoting every little unnecessary quote inside a single quote, no? Editing is the key.

Anyway, this is done every time by many other members in this board and we all manage well with our huge post responses and multi-quotes.

I would expect you to make a suggestion or to elaborate on how you feel this could work better for you, not to prohibit me to quote and write down my thoughts to the posts I want to respond simply for your scrolling convenience (you can just drag down the bar, after all). If I didn't knew you bud, I would had called you out for being rude.

As long as I have something to say and as long as I'm not quoting unnecessary huge quotes, it is not "unneeded" (whether or not you are interested/reading what I write or not).

PS: I don't have a scroll wheel either.

I actually like seeing Sonya with nothing on her head for a change. She didn't have a headband in the final design of her MKDA model either, so, its OK. I'm not sure she needs something, but, the hat or a headband would be cool.

I've always disagreed with the harsh words such as "slut", "whore", and "skank" to refer to the half-naked females. I mean, come on. I understand why it can be disliked (I don't think it fits many of them), but, I can't understand the need to refer to Sindel as a whore for revealing as much as she does.



Yeah, but that was "body damage". It wasn't like she went to fight with an already torn/teared shirt.

Why should Sonya remain modest? Because that's part of her theme and charm.

Sonya is the one who keeps her pants on and covers up well enough to look respectable, decent, and still sexy. She still looks modest, but, she could do better.



Sonya looked perfect in MKvsDC. The render was the only thing that gathered negative attention, it was slightly flawed due to the bad designers not distinguishing female jaws from male jaws, but, Sonya was extremely well portrayed and designed (feminine+sexy+tough) in that game. Look at how gorgeous and feminine she looks in every single cut-scene, ending, VS pose, gameplay, etc.

Also, Sonya has been a "feminist" icon long before this new look. MK1 pretty much established her as such, and her following incarnations maintained that image.

No, I really don't think so. You would never recognize this character as "Sonya" unless it had her name tagged on it. Nothing about this outfit accentuates that she is in the military at all. Even the previous poster who states he likes sluts recognized her as such.

And how are Mileena and Kitana "very far" from looking like strip dancers? There's not much more to take off the costumes at all before they're nude!

Mileena I will give you. But maybe you should start in telling me how you believe Sonya's and Kitana's new looks are IN character. There have been multiple reasons on this thread stating why they are not. How about stating why you believe they are. And none of this "well, every other female in fighting games is completely nude!" We are not talking about other females. We are talking about Sonya and Kitana, a mitlitary officer and an assasin/princess with a good alignment.

Regarding Sonya:

I think the reason she looks "out of character" for showing that much cleavage is because she's never shown that much ever before and because it's simply unnecessary.

It's only there to serve as eye candy and for the sake of making her more sexual. It just doesn't make sense considering how sexy she already is with her pants on and her shirt covering up her boobs.

It is definitely not an exaggeration or a big deal such as having her dressed in a bikini, but, the fact that what should had been logically covered up for Sonya is not covered up, is the main reason that annoys and frustrates people (myself included).

Adding a shirt should be simple, easy, and is the logical thing to do for her character.

And still, Sonya hasn't been ruined for me unless she turns around and reveals a big opened whole in her pants right in the middle of her butt (revealing the controversial thong).

now with that out of the way, Yeah she looks good imo. Shes going along the lines of every video female char, sexy yet dangerous. Remember back in 1980 sonya was err sexy in that type of skimpy outfit.

Awesome! I've been an MK-head since the MK1 arcade days and the story has never been an interest of mine so how the new costume designs "destroys" the story doesn't phase me.

Exaggeration or blind fanboyism doesn't help anybody. Gameplay-wise, this may be the best MK game since UMK3, or even better...but in terms of art and story, comparing the costume designs we've seen so far plus the "It's like MK1 thru 3 except Raiden changes stuff" storyline to the original games...I would say Deadly Alliance was better than this is shaping up to be, by a disappointingly wide margin.

Me personally, I think if there's a "Miss Mortal Kombat", it's Kitana.

I love Sonya, always have. And this outfit is OK... for an alt. For her main, I want her covered up. I don't even mind her not being in military threads, because she wasn't really in MK or MK3. But seriously, cover her up. That goes for Kitana, too. Honestly, I didn't like it when they started stripping the female characters (*coiugh* Mileena) in Deception. But now it's gone above and beyond. I don't buy the "Mileena is an assassain so it's what she would wear" BS argument, but I don't mind it so much on her. But Kitana and Sonya are supossed to be respectable characters, and I can't take them seriously or respect them when they are dressed like that. Seriously, can you imagine the cutscenes with them standing around talking about life and death situations dressed like that? I know it'll break the fourth wall for me. We all saw the "Sonya lifeguard" image in DA's Krypt. Stuff like that doesn't really bother me, and alts can be whatever the heck NRS wants, because that's what they are--they're "alternate," meaning you don't have to use them. For regular outfits, though, it just makes me move the character select icon on to the next fighter. I already play as Johnny Cage too often, to the exclusion of others. Now it's going to be happening even more.

Finally, Queve's done the multi-quoting things since he first starting posting here an age and a half ago. I see nothing wrong with it. Just scroll past it if you don't like it. I write tomes mmyself, and I know not everyone reads them. It's the price we pay. No biggie.

Anyways, your observations are very accurate. Surprisingly accurate, actually. Perhaps startlingly accurate? That's pretty much how I feel toward Sonya's character, embracing the "out-there" aspects of her character given the world around her. At the same time, I'm very glad you took the time to break down your own views of Sonya. Very interesting read. I'm sure if I was in your shoes I would think the exact same way, and I can see now, more clearly than ever, why Sonya happens to be your favorite femme, and why you have clamored for a more realistic, military Sonya. (I have to say, I particularly enjoyed your reasoning behind her more iconic traits).

Having said that, I also do agree with your suggested process for designing her character. I don't think a middle ground between the two idealisms of Sonya would be that hard to attain. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think your most-liked costume of hers is MKSM? I think that costume might be something pretty close to this "middle ground", actually. I'm sure you hate the belly piercing, though lol which is something I'd love to return.



Hmm, maybe if they closed up the vest a little bit? I don't know, I think the addition of a shirt would make her TOO covered up. I know you're probably like this right now: lol, but what I mean is Vest + Shirt might be too much. I like little hints of her nice body, and two layers of tops might take that away and leave her sexiness too concealed.

Another thing is that, honestly, I believe that in-game footage and even screencaps will make things a lot better. Her position in that render (plus the size of it) totally draws focus to her breasts, and even makes it seem like the sections of the vest covering them are too flimsy and small. I have a strong feeling that when we see an actual in-game representation of Sonya, or even a high-res render, we will come to realize the sturdiness of that vest, and I think we'll collectively feel that it's doing more for her than we can see right this moment.
