One thing I've always felt would be an awesome game-play mode ever since 4 players became the console standard, is a 4-Player 2-vs-2 Tag mode.

That way each character on each team could not only have it's character specialist, but also each player would have their own style, further adding to the depth of play.
This would also pave the way for cooperative tag combos, where each player must know their character's part of each tag combo to fully execute it.

Also I've found, that sometimes winner stays, loser pays style matchmaking can be rough, especially on the less-skilled.
I think this game mode would help everyone get into the game, that way teams can be assembled with skill in mind
(i.e. Expert/Novice-vs-Expert/Novice teams).
Where an inexperienced player can tag in their more experienced team-mate in hairy situations.

Or even just to simply get people playing, as opposed to waiting an entire match or two till their turn.

Am I alone on this, or would this be something you would like to see implemented?
Let's hear your thoughts on the idea.

When tag team mode was first announced, I actually thought it was for sure gonna be 4 player. It wasn't until just recently had I realized it's not such a given. Hopefully we get an official word on this, because I would love for it to be an option.

The problem with this is how do you tag in your partner. Does the person playing do it? Do you tag yourself in? What if they never tag you in? If the latter, what if some novice player keeps tagging themself in because they want to play? This would mess up the gameplay greatly. If something has to be four-player, it better not be tag-team kombat.

I could maybe see something like Thrill Kill for 4 player, but 2 vs 2 with 4 players honestly sounds rather confusing.

In my opinion it's simple. Just have the person who's in, press a button to tag his partner in. Sure, someone could just not tag in, but in any team based game you risk having shitty teammates who either try and mess up the fun of the game, or are just terrible team players. That's not something that should stop the 4 player aspect from happening. I've learned from taking classes in game design, that you shouldn't take something out JUST because there may be a couple of dicks who try and ruin the game. You can NEVER eliminate that factor completely from the game, without eliminating all options, choices, and possibilities in the process. The less options/choices/possibilities a game has, the less fun it is.

Worst comes to worst, only go into team games with a friend.
Wasnt 4 player 2 vs 2 tag confirmed like at E3?

...and this pretty much is the entire problem with such a gameplay mode. the only real way i can see this working is if a 2-man team played on a one local console. when a match is in play, only the player on screen has the ability to tag their team mate in. and since your team mate is sitting right beside you, you can just say "Tag Me!" and the fight can continue from there.

and if the jackass doesn't tag you in you can just punch him in the head! grin

I though it was 4 player...oops.

I can see it being a problem, however, with lag and such. The timing has to be on POINT to be 4 person or else I can see it being extremely frustrating.

Probably you press a button that lets your other teammate come in like in SCIV you press R1(?) or something to let your partner swap in. And they can only swap out not swap in so yh if u get what im saying :S

This shouldn't be an issue since DOA4 had it when the 360 launched.

maybe, you take/deliver a certain amount of damage and you're automatically tagged out? plus you could always voluntarily tag yourself out at any time. if it'd be 2 people in the same room, this could be managed well enough through communication alone.

this cant exactly be a difficult mode for nrs to put in the game can it? i think its a great idea unfortunately, modern-day video games generally try to make as much money as they can by forcing you and your friends to all buy copies of the game to go multiplayer (i.e. online) instead of letting, for example, 4 mates all gather round on one console and play multiplayer that way.

This would be similar to Double Team in Halo games. To ensure that this would work, the game would need TrueSkill ratings or such, so that each team will be as equal as possible in statistics. There could be Good-Beginner vs Good-Beginner, Mediocre-Mediocre vs Mediocre-Mediocre, Mediocre-Mediocre vs Beginner-Pro and so on.

I know for a fact that there's local 4 player. If they don't include online 4 player, well that's just lame. I'll still enjoy it no matter what though.

I'll go so far as to say I want every possible combination up to 4 players.

2 player tag-team obviously.

3 player tag team where the lone player controls a whole team and the other two act as a team.

4 player tag team.

I also would love if the player allocations were fully customizable with online. So, for instance, if you and a buddy are sitting in your living room then you can both be on the same team online or be on separate teams during an online match.

I sure hope this is true. What a great thing this would be to give more multiplayer credential to the fighting genre.

It would be pretty easy to implement, provided their network code is flexible enough. Does anyone know if the online code is in-house or outsourced?

Anyway, P1 tag out, player 2 tag in and finish the kombo. If they're too slow, the kombo fails and the match simply progresses naturally. I am also in favor of 2 on 1, ect.

Oh, if this has been confirmed, then my head a splode.

As far as the tagging, if it were up to me, the current player would be able to tag out, while the other can perform a tag request.

Anyway, I hope this is true.

I am amazed that nobody suggested that the tag system be that BOTH players have to hit the tag button to make the switch.

pretty sure this was confirmed along time ago,, though not entirly confirmed that it is 4 player online tag

it was confirmed 2 players on the same console can log online and play tag team online, so u and a friend on ure ps3 vs an opponent...

im not sure if it is confirmed however whether u can log online solo and partner with a player online vs 2 other players

I'd suppose there would be a small time before you could do another swap (3-10 sec.) so that you would be focusing in the fighting and not swapping. About the possible issue zephyr mentioned, either what Dmack wrote or just keep swapping back.

This would be very difficult to synchronize, imo.
Which is why I believe a tag request feature would fulfill this duty.
So the guy who's out can attempt a tag, to basically let the guy who's in know he wants to be tagged in.
Kinda like in tag team wrestling, when the guy who's out, is reaching to be tagged in.

Also this would help to eliminate the problem of the out guy, repeatedly tagging himself in.

But yeah, It doesn't bother me THAT much if you can't team up with online players. Since my teammate would likely be on the same console.
Even still, it would be nice.

I was actually thinking about this since it's been announced, because I know my friends and I would enjoy it more if we were playing on the same team against whatever. However, that just seems a bit complicated for a fighting game so I'm not holding my breath.
