OKay this is a bit far-fetched , but those look like the MK1 statues in one of the arenas. This being said, there was a rumour of a HD remake of the original MK trilogy , seen here:

I believe Ed said in an interview with Angry something or other that Tag Mode in MK9 wasn’t played a lot and made it seem as though it’s unlikely to return. Link posted above for some reason.

As for my guess, that definitely looks like the MK1 Warrior Shrine, so a remaster of at least the first game seems most likely.

I think that this is the most likely outcome.

Ed Boon said he is catering to what the fans want. Ever since the MK9 days people have been wanting the tag team option back. Further to this, I saw a video on youtube where you can do assists ( Scorpion called in a Baraka assist), very similar to the tag mechanic in MK9.

With that in mind, I think they will actually go and try to do character specific duo-fatalities. For instance Kung Lao and Liu Kang , or Smoke and Noob or Scorpion and Sub-zero, etc . I think that would be an innovative way to introduce something that will both hype up the casuals and the competitive scene. As you know the most popular Fighting game at last year's EVO was Dragon Ball Fighterz which is a 3 on 3 game. Thinking back to the MvsC2 days, these types of games draw in a lot of attention with both the casual and the hardcore crowd , mostly because of the fast paced-action and strategy involved in picking the right teams. Add in the amazing visuals and the prospect of team fatalities and you have yourself a SHOW!

Tag mode was unpopular supposedly so. Whatever this is, it's bigger than tag mode.

Probably either more needlessly difficult character trials outside of tower mode that I won't be good enough to beat but awesome content will be locked behind OR a newly revamped KUSTOM KOMBAT mode with more crazy modifiers, lol. Que sarcastic clapping.
