Loved playing as Sonya at the reveal event. Proper rush down character buuuuuuut could not see her leg grab in any of the variations I tried ????

The game felt great though, every punch and kick felt solid and I’m super hyped for the next reveal on Jan 30th!

That face...

I was worried about the leg grab, I looked upon her customizable abilities and it isn't there either. I will be very disapointed if they take it out, it is her most iconic move after all. Do you know if the flying kick and military stance are back?

She sounds fine, but they need to fix that face asap... She looked much better in MKX. Also, why is she the only character that didn't get an updated outfit? They kep the boring things of her previous version (the dark color scheme) but changed the best thing about it: The face looked good.

I don't want to panic yet as it's still too early, but I have yet to see any of her trademark moves being in MK11 other than the pink rings :(

I heard the build they used is five months old, so there is a chance she doesn't have them because of that. At least the dive kick is in...

As for her design, one of her variations has a design that resembles MK3, and it looks awesome.

I got a kick out of how they kept referring to her pink rings projectile as onion rings.

Anyone seen or found a vid of her Brutality yet? From the Kustomisation menu it looks like she only had 1 in the playable build.

Truly hope the leg grab omission was due to it being and older build. I would truly hate to see Sonya done dirty again (as she was in MKDA and MKA) the leg grab is her signature move and the one she should never be without out of all of them. After all, would they EVER put Scorpion in an MK game without his spear move? Hell no, they wouldn't dare. Same for Sub's ice ball or Kung Lao's hat toss, Baraka's chop-chop... really the list goes on. These are all moves these iconic characters will never be without. Yet it was fine for them to do it to Sonya in MKDA and MKA. I truly hope that it is not happening again. It was insulting enough the first time (that not only did they take out her leg grab, but they also replaced it with a "hand-me-down" from Liu? Really?) BTW in a vid where someone was looking in the moves that you could add to Sonya via customization, I did see another move that looked A LOT like that damned fly kick of Liu's. So I truly hope that I'm worrying for nothing and Sonya will be presented in the final game with her leg grab.

I know that there are a fair amount of fans who care nothing about Sonya as an MK character or a fighter (and that’s fine... to each their own)... but for those of us that do, this is important. After all, I'm gonna guess that if Boon and Co suddenly released an MK game where Scorpion would not have his spear this time around... his fans would go absolutely berserk. It's the same for Sonya fans. It's her signature move and she should never be without it.

lol, I mean hey... I know that at what...50 something now? she technically shouldn't be doing stuff like that. However if they can still have her doing all that other stuff we saw in vids showcasing her (a lot of it pretty damn brutal and athletic) then there should be NO reason she shouldn't be able to still do the leg grab. She handled it fine in X.

I've watched every Sonya gameplay video available so far and it's so sad to see... Leg Grab, Kartwheel, Kiss, Arc Kick, Square Wave Punch, Bicycle Kick... all NOWHERE to be found. I watch the reveal fight vs Skarlet, hear Ed Boon say "Both Sonya and Skarlet have their signature moves and new ones" and I actually cringe... WHERE? Where are they?

This is in addition to her appearance having zero elements carried over from her previous designs other than the blonde hair. Blue eyes? gone. Green clothes? gone. She's a completely different character. MK11 Sonya is only Sonya in name to me.

I hate to admit it (because she's always been my favorite MK female)... but I gotta agree here. Don't get me wrong, the fighting style looks great and particularly brutal... but it is not "Sonya" to me. I realize they're excited to have Ronda voicing Sonya and all, but I think they tried to make her way more "Ronda" and decidedly less "Sonya". It's completely clear in her fighting style and move set, it's practically all MMA and is obviously heavily influenced by Ronda's own style of fighting. The style change I can get behind. I think it's effective and it's awesome to watch. I also thinks it fits a special forces agent. My problem is, aside from the ring toss, there is very little left to make her recognizable as Sonya. Right now she's just looking like a new fighter I'd like to try who has a passing resemblance to Sonya. I don't know, I may be alone in that, but that's how I'm feeling about it. Giving her back most if not all of her signature specials would go a long way to correct this.

Again, given the age of the footage used, it could be too early to stress over this and it could all be for nothing. However, given the past... I just can't help it. Like I said previously, I really REALLY hope that I'm wrong and just being paranoid. We'll see in the weeks to come. Keeping my fingers crossed, but not exactly holding my breath.

On another note though, I have to say: The game itself is looking SOOOOO good. April just feels so far away lol.

Yep. I agree 100% with everything you said. Sonya is my favorite character, and I appreciate what they're trying to do. In fact, before she was revealed for MKX, I was hoping she'd get a CQC/MMA variation, but she didn't. Her new moves/fighting style are very fitting for a special forces agent. The ass whoping move is very brutal and cool. I just wish they didn't come at expense of her classic moves, because she may as well be a new character. Her trademark moves aren't supposed to be locked behind a variation, they should all be available at all times. And please re color her outfit to green!

I wouldn't worry about her coloration too much, multiple pallettes are available on outfits. There's a LOT of white-clad Sub-Zero, and Scorpion footage. White Scorpion? Klassik Smoke konfirmed! The red bits on Scorp's new digs could be symbolic if something happened to Kenshi and/or Takeda in the story.

I've seen her kiss stun mist used in a fight, not just her win pose.

Thank you for this! I love how "on-it" you are regarding Sonya. I thought I'd scoured every gameplay video of her so far, but you keep showing up with new goodies. I've been particularly hooked on a series of competitive matches featuring her on a few YouTube channels; gives me a better idea not only of her gameplay, but of the core mechanics as well.

Like TomTaz and diirechit have pointed out, the lack of classic moves is a little worrying. What keeps me optimistic is the fact that, in spite of all of our long-winded apprehension before the release of MKX, they ended up treating her very right, and I can safely say that I saw the most "perfect" iteration of Sonya thus far. I can't even reasonably articulate how much I've played her in that game, but it's disgusting. I'm all for these new moves as well, and the "grappler/MMA" aspect of her fighting style, and I'm always down for progression, but it does feel like something's missing. I believe I saw the Dive Kick in one of her videos, listed in a custom variation--but I find myself worrying about this as well, because if it's only available for custom variations, it likely follows that it can't be used in actually competitive/ranked matches; as a side note, in fact, the core variations feel light, relative to MKX's variations, across the board. I think we gotta fatten those up a little bit. As an example, Sonya's parries in Duck and Cover are cool and all, but I think the Garrote Parries offered more flash, AND the Covert Ops variation also came with Military Stance and Kartwheel.

Onto more celebratory things: I love her intro, and her win pose; and, of course, I just love the fact that she's included in the roster, and was revealed so early on. Her throws are bad-ass, and bias aside, I think her Fatal Blow is the best out of the bunch. I'm a fan of the Fatality as well, it's ridiculous while also being just plain cool, and a huge leap from the somewhat tame Fatalities she's had in the past two games.

Hoping to see more of her in the coming Kombat Kasts, and, though I'm not at SlickRick's proficiency, I'm going to continue keeping an eye out for new videos featuring her. Which brings me to one final thing...

The player isn't good, but I'm really starting to like the way she plays. I was extremely upset at first as she lost all of her trademark moves with the exception of Ring Toss, but at least she still looks fun to play as. Really gonna miss the arc kick and kartwheel especially, but the new moveset I can deal with. She uses judo now. The Ass-Whooping and slide look really nice.

Yeah, after the Kombat Kast today... my hopes are officially dashed regarding the leg grab. Which is funny, really, because the guys actually had a small talk about classic moves. They made remarks to the the tune of: “What would so-and-so be without this move?” Or “Can you imagine (insert name here) without this move?” Basically making comments that it would be crazy to put forth these characters without these moves. And then, and this is my favorite part, one of them (Steve I think it was) said something like this:

”I’m glad Sonya has her fly kick back, nice nod to MKDA” not exact wording... but you get the point. Really? First of all that move was never Sonya’s! It was a pitiful hand-me-down of Liu’s. I dunno just the fact that he had to throw that in there... had to make reference to that one specific character move after the above mentioned things were discussed about other characters and how important their signature/iconic moves were... just kind of killed any hope I had left for that leg grab. So don’t dare do it to anyone else, but it’s absolutely fine to do it to Sonya multiple times? Ok. Yeah.

I was thinking the same thing as I heard those comments. I was going off inside of my own head, like how is it not obvious that you are being blatantly contradictory right now? Why is no one noticing this, or addressing it properly? It's almost like they've been meaning to reinvent Sonya in this way for a while now, and their new notion of the character is so ingrained at this point that her specific lack of classic moves doesn't even register anymore. And didn't one of them refer to the Leg-Sweep move as a "Leg-Grab" multiple times? Ugh, I hate to sound like one of those spoiled fans who wants the world on top of already getting his character, like "Why can't you just be happy?" But I'll reiterate, I'm over the moon about her inclusion and development, and I'll play the hell out of her, but I can't help but be sore about this right now. Hope I change my mind when I actually fire the game up.

Choose Your Destiny - Sonya

It goes pretty in-depth into her moves and strings. Her mix-up game is looking flames as usual, I daresay even more fun than MKX. And, at around 3:42, if you freeze-frame, one of her Duck and Cover specials seems to be the Dive Kick, along with the Parries and the Air Throw. That little icon right there is keeping a sliver of hope alive in me.

Oh yeah Leo, I caught that alright... for a split second I got excited that it was mentioned. Then the split second after that I realized what move they were actually referring to and came about (I think) as close to an aneurysm as I ever want to get. Fun times.

Cassie officially has Sonya's drop kick and drone moves!

I don't care about the drone, as it is hardly iconic to Sonya but damn, they really stripped her of all her signature moves

Combine that with the intro line Cassie has with Dark Raiden and I'm hoping.... I'm praying.... Cassie will replace Sonya going forward.

I do not think Cassie will ever replace Sonya. Cassie and Sonya are their own distinct characters in their own right. If Cassie was to replace Sonya then Sonya would not have been playable in this game in my opinion. We see a younger Sonya attacking Kano so that would be a good way of keeping Sonya going.
