Just be REALLY SURE you know what you want to do with art after school.
Like in my case, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do and now I regret going to the school I went to. I wanted to do 3D, but I went to a fine art school. I didn't know much about 3D at the time, so that's why I went there.
I didn't even know how to turn on a computer at the time...
I did get a lot better because of art school. The difference is very noticeable, but I gotten even better after it ended.
For the 3D stuff, I took some basic classes for 3Dstudio max.
I learned the more advanced techniques looking at forums like CGtalk.com
I have found that the more you know, the easier it is to understand things. You just have to keep at it, pretty obvious right?
Now I'd like to go back to school, somewhere that specializes in 3D art, like GNOMON or VFS.
A very important tip.
NEVER stop drawing!
Drawing is kind of like weight lifting., if you don't practice frequently you'll get rusty / weak.
I've had this happen to me on both
It's can be very frustrating, knowing you can do something but it just doesn't come out right.

That's cool man, good luck.
Some good points bleed!
I thought about getting into the "different schools offer different things" conversation, but my post was already teetering on too long so I axed it.
Once you've figured out what you want to go to school for, researching the schools you're interested in is important too. Obviously, some programs are going to be better at some schools than others.
