Shao Kahn did nothing wrong
Where did I say about playing it now? I'm talking my first reaction to the game which was a long time ago. The game is not fun imo.
It's rather interesting you and I have polar views of MK4.
My only real gripe of MK4 is its small roster. It has always been a fantasy of mine to see MK4 remastered with 25+ characters.
There were some good that came from that game and I'd say it was Quan Chi and his leg beat fatality. Also as mentioned before the arcade endings are still memorable and I quote them to this day. Especially "It's over Jarek!"
MK11 > MKDA > UMK3 > MKX > MK2 > MK9 > MKD > MK1 > MKA > MK4 > MKvsDCU
Ask me again in a few months after the newness has worn off and the game is riddled with guest characters, but at the moment I don't think I've ever had as much fun playing an MK game than I've been having with MK11. It's a shame that the complaints about the progression system have completely overshadowed what is otherwise the most thoroughly enjoyable fighting game that NRS has made yet. I have some minor issues with the story, but I still think it's about the best they could have done to put a cap on a trilogy based on a messy, unnecessary reboot. Aesthetically, it's amazing, with arguably the best stages in the series and genuinely awesome realism and production quality across the board. I really hope the DLC extends the life of this game for a long time because it could easily be everything I could want out of an MK game.
Deadly Alliance will just always hold a special place for me. I'll be the first to admit it's broken and pretty obviously a rushed production, but it's the game that really sucked me into the series with the intriguing cast of characters and atmosphere. I'll always appreciate it for its boldness, unique ideas and pure aesthetic value. I'll overlook the fact that you can win by impaling someone and turtling the entire match.
MK9 is essentially the opposite of MKDA for me. It's fun to play and was definitely novel at the time for being as competent as it was, but aesthetically it's atrocious. Everything from the character design to the way the menus look makes it hard for me to regard this game too fondly. The story and writing is bad and I still get bothered when people regard it as being some sort of faithful recreation of the original games. I'm over complaining about it being a pointless reboot and I get that it was a necessary evil in some respects, but to me it will stand as the creative low point of the series. Still, it's fun to play and the arenas are nice. But MKX was a vast improvement and MK11 is even better.
Armageddon is better than it gets credit for, MK4 is just boring, MKvsDCU is bad.

Man, that ending. Jarek's scream while falling is every MK fan's nightmare.
Literally. Almost. My mom asked me to stop playing MK4 with my childhood friend because he said the Game Over sequence gave him nightmares.
MK4's endings are terrible in the best way possible.

Some of them are pretty dope - Scorpion's is canon and well done. Johnny Cage has a funny one - the best are the funny ones though. Anything Jarek especially
And the way Goro falls down the Game Over well is excellent

MK2 and Deception are the best “classic” games in the series.
MK9 was ridiculous. The gameplay was good, but they butchered the story. The game also looked awful. The game looked like a caricature of itself.
So that's not a costume? You're actual military?
MKX and MK11 look awesome.
MK9 could have been great had it not been so cartoony. The aesthetics of that game were very dissapointing. Like I’ve said before, MK9 looked like a caricature of MK. Instead of a modern retelling of the original trilogy we got a caricature. The females looked especially ridiculous and the arenas sucked.

I personally liked how MK9 looked aesthically and was turned off from MKX's presentation after it was released. Too dark. MK was always goofy so I don't see the problem with it being too cartoony.

Agreed it still had that imaginative lush comic book aesthetic. Much more compelling than the grim dark look of MKX and the photo realism of MK11. A fighting game that takes itself too seriously is never very fun or compelling. When it comes to MK especially it suits it better for it to be accompanied by a more vibrant and creative art style.
Also come on people play by the rules and list em. Don't just say one and all the others suck or something like that. It kills the fun.

"Is it so important that you win one last argument with him?" "No, it is not, but it is true that I will miss the arguments; they were, finally, all that we had."
MK9 is still my favorite MK game, as far as gameplay goes. It just feels most like a classic MK game in modern times. It had the two-on-two battles, the huge cast of classic characters (and bosses with fatalities and babalities to them), funny Babalities, competent Fatalities (for the most part), lost of stage fatalities that aren't locked behind DLC, a slew of minigames (the Test Your --- games are pretty good)... it just hit all the right notes for me. Aesthetically and story-wise, MK11 gets top billing for me; I love the more conservative and sensible clothing choices they had with the characters, the colors weren't as dark as MKX (though not as colorful as MK9), and I love Kronika as a villain.
Next on the list would probably be MKTrilogy, because I love playing as Kintaro, then MKA, because of the novelty of an MKT-like game in 3D (and it has my favorite version of Kintaro in it, design-wise; hate how he looks in MK9, but like his story significance in it), and the rest can go wherever. MKX is a weak entry into the series, from what I can tell; too dark in both palette and tone, too many guest characters in the DLC, boring stage fatalities locked behind DLC, no babalities, friendships, or minigames to break up the monotony of the fighting... it just didn't seem that great to me. On that note, with MK11, what's the point of the Mercies? Unless you're trying to get a specific Brutality, why Mercy your opponent? There's no animalities in this game, so why bother?

Because it's a requirement for certain Brutalities. Why was Mercy required for Animalities in the first place?
I still cant figure out how to do Mercy in Trilogy. Other ports of 3 I can do it, Trilogy it never ever works.
On topic: So I looked at the answers I've gotten here and it appears we can say this about MK Online (generally):
-MK2, Deception and 9 are most popular MO games
-MK4, MK7 and Vs DCU are the least popular
-The middle ground is typically MK3 (being higher) Deadly Alliance (Pretty Middle) and MK1 (the original, lower)
-MKX is more polarizing than I thought. I liked it, I just didnt get alot of time with it. I like 11 better
MK11 appears to be a smashing success and it is much deserved. If youre reading this and havent played it, do yourself a favor ✌️❤️
1. MK2 (1st MK game played. Classic)
2. MK11 (No 50/50 BS, Mix up city and has future balance potential)
3. MK9 (Best roster and well rebooted to MK trilogy series)
4. MK3 (Nostalgia and a classic. Loved the soundtrack, but the balance was trash)
5. MKX (50/50 BS, Mix up city, most unbalanced tier list till this day, however the game was a lot of fun.)
6. MK Deception (I enjoyed the quest mode in deception and some of the characters had potential)
7. MK Deadly Alliance (Netherrealm did well for their 1st 3D game)
8. MK Armageddon (The fatalities were trash and the characters were didnt get as much justice as the previous 3D games.
9. MK4 / MK1 (only 2 games I never owned, but I have played)
