Ehhhh. Not so much. Injustice 2 may have breached the surface to bring us forgotten DC Comics icons like Doctor Fate and Swamp Thing, but this obscurity is taking the form of April Fools!
Those not in-the-know may be confused by the significance of the joke teaser, tweeted by Ed Boon with the phrase "Activate!".
It's a reference to the late seventies phenomenon of The Super Friends - a DC Comics animated series of questionable quality that aired on ABC. The cartoon depicted the earnest, but limited adventures of the Justice League and their arch-villains.
The show introduced The Wonder Twins (Zan and Jayna): a mighty morphin' pair of aliens whose powers could only activate if they made physical contact. The fist bumping siblings would announce their transformation. In the case of Zan, he could assume the form of water in its various states (puddle, ice, steam. Jayna had the more enviable ability of transforming into any animal she could name, of Earth or extra terrestrial origin.
The Wonder Twins activate their powers in Super Friends.
The Wonder Twins may have a cult following that's seen them make modern appearances as recent as TV's Teen Titans Go!, but they're generally remembered as a slightly absurd artefact of their time. Each is readily replaced by similarly powered, more interesting characters like "The Element Man" Metamorpho, or zoologically powered heroes Vixen, Animal Man, and Beast Boy. All of whom we'd love to see!
Of course, comics history is built on a foundation of finding interesting qualities in past concepts and revamping them better than before. The Wonder Twins may be a tad on the nose as is, but they pose interesting possibilities a fighting game could certainly exploit!
In Mortal Kombat X, Ferra/Torr gave us a new version of tag team fighting based primarily on a floating secondary character - Ferra. We haven't seen a true tag team in Mortal Kombat's main roster since Noob Saibot and Smoke came tethered in 2004's Mortal Kombat: Deception. If NetherRealm Studios applied themselves, an adaptation of the Twin's tag-based power menu could be an innovative twist on the basic formula!
