All right, time to give you folks an idea how old I am.
I was first introduced to Doctor Who by my father, when he took me to a Doctor Who exhibition while on vacation. After we got home from that trip, I started watching the series, and quickly got hooked.
That was back in 1985, when the local PBS station was showing Tom Baker's episodes. They hadn't gotten to Peter Davison yet, and in the UK Colin Baker was the Doctor. Ooof.
Paul McGann has actually been a very prolific Doctor. It's just that all of his appearances have been in audio adventures produced by Big Finish, whose series of Doctor Who audio adventures could arguably be said to have led to the new TV series. (For example, Nicholas Briggs, the voice of the Daleks/Cybermen/Ice Warriors/etc. in the new series, was a producer at Big Finish and provided voices there first.)
If you want a good example of McGann's Doctor, then I recommend the 40th anniversary story "Shada", available for free on the BBC's site. (RealPlayer required; the Flash version does not work.) It was originally a Tom Baker story that was never finished due to a strike at the BBC; this is the official final version.

I meant to say only TV appearance, and I agree that 8 doesn't get enough respect. I had to piece together 8's comics, and I found them riveting. I actually really want to know what became of Destrii and hope (probably in vain) for her to make an appearance in show to at least give me some closure.

In case anyone is curious about past Doctors, there is a series running on BBC about each Doctor 1-11. They're currently up to 4, but the tend to replay them from time to time. They're information on each Doctor accompanied by an episode from that Doctor's run.

It was Angels Take Manhattan.
I didn't have clue who anyone was when I started watching it, and by the end I was crying because two of them were going to die.

I nearly forgot I had this thread; been on the Tweety-box all morning!
But, as Mick has shown us, the great Peter Capaldi- best known in the Whoniverse as playing both, Caecilius a Roman marble Merchant, and John Frobisher, an unelected bureaucrat forced to handle the demands of the 4-5-6 -will be playing the 12th incarnation of the Doctor!

Looking forward to Christmas (and beyond)!
I look forward to having an older Doctor. I loved both Tennant and Smith, but I think it'll be nice to have a Doctor that has a natural air of wizened authority about him. I sort of miss that almost paternal nature the Doctor had with some of his earlier companions.

I was a bit underwhelmed. To my mind, Smith's tenure was plagued with false perils and bullshit cheat solutions. His end was just another in a long list. It was also another story where major mythology was stripped of its gravitas and reduced in scope and consequence with little fanfare. I find that very grinding.
Probably shouldn't assume too much from the brief appearance, but Capaldi was a little bit wackier than I might've expected. Been trying not to think The Thick of It, but I might've expected his Doctor to be a little more serious. I suppose we'll see. For the time being, I think it's a mistake to expect much of consequence from what seems like leading stories.
