This thread is for all of you gore loving monkeys out there who loved Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside for Sega CD, if you had the luxury of playing it! While Eternal Champions for Sega Genesis was cool, it was nowhere near as badass as EC:CFTD. Post your favorite overkills and sudden deaths! I absolutely loved the mine overkill, where your victim would be impaled by the sharpened log. Someone please refresh my memory on some of the cinekills if you could, thanks. Also, wouldn't it be amazing if they made a next-gen EC? Just a nice little thought. :)

I never played the Sega CD version, but I thought that the original was pretty cool. I'm surprised that it wasn't more popular. I would like to see it come back, if it was done well.

Because they don't make enough money tongue

But man, a 3-D version of the game would be so cool! Just to see Rax and Larcen going at it in 3-D, I mean just imagine how cool their attacks could look today! *drools happily*

Well, Sega and Sammy are combined into one company now. Sega made Eternal Champions, and Sammy makes Guilty Gear.

A new EC game with graphics as good as GG would be my dream (as would be TomTaz's dream). Although, it could be 2D or 3D, doesn't matter to me.

Another great part of EC is the music. I absolutely love Midknight's music in the Genesis version (never played the Sega CD version).

I pretty much know the differences in the two versions. The Sega CD one is much better, it has blood, more finishing moves, more characters, etc.

Long live EC! grin

I remember going into the options menu and just listening to the losing theme, RAX's level, and Xavier's level music over and over...

Oh this is a sweet thread! I love EC:CD! I actually hooked up my Sega CD yesterday to play this awesome game! My best character is Xavier, and I also love Jetta, Larcen, and R.A.X I wish a new one would be made preferably in 2d but a 3d version, if done right would be great too. I love the music too, and it's fun to sometimes just put the game in a cd player and listen to the soundtrack. The game also had the biggest instruction manual for a fighting game I've ever seen Lol! 70 pages!

Wow, great thread man!! well I have to say, when i had gotten the orginal for sega genisis, I loved the graphics, the music (the secert background deaths known as overkills), and the characters were totally well drawn and very colorful. With the exception that the game was hard as fuck, I'd say (please dont kill me mk peoples) that EC was better then MK1. For years I waited to get my hands on a sega cd just to get the follow up of the orginal, I had heard soooo much about how bloody it was and this and that, well last year I happend to get my little hands on a sega cd and a badly scratched up EC cd for sega cd. Now granted it freezes from time to time, but i have seen almost every death move in there and I will say this much.. it makes every MK game made, look like a nose bleed in terms of gore and blood. Now the bad thing is, I can get up to maybe the 3rd fighter (and not with ease mind you) and then get my ass handed to me...VERY hard!!!even on easy. Kinda funny, but shadow made a cameo in the sega game called X-perts and Lance had his own game on the game gear. I saw there is also a few books written about the eternal champions..good stuff. I think this game would have been waaaaaayyyy more successful if it had been easier to defeat the fighters.. i mean I know a game should be challeging but..wow..HARD! anyways, I had heard that a 3rd game was in the making for sega saturn ..BUT.. sega thought that investing thier time and money on virtual fighter woudl pay off better, so they canned the project..which is too bad cause I heard it was going to totally kick ass! maybe after the release of MK:D sega will pull thier heads outta thier asses and give Midway a run for thier money. RIP Eternal Champions!

Yeah, the game was hard. Like TomTaz said, it got easier with practice, but shit, the Eternal Champion was insane! You only had two chances to beat him, and after that, game over. I've had it for years, and I only beat it once with Larcen. sad

True, but that's Sega of Japan (combined with Sammy). Sega of America is responsible for developing EC1&2 and they're also well known for killing off some of their largest franchises as well; Streets of Rage, Vectorman, Bug!, Eternal Champions 3: The Final Chapter, etc. Though another installment would be nice (this has always been my dream), it seems very unlikely at the moment, being that it's SOA (Sega of America) and the only true sequel that SOA has done in recent years is on xbox with ToeJam & Earl 3 (great game by the way) excluding their sports titles.

As far as my favorite overkills & cinekills? Here's mine:

Midknight (grinder overkill)
Midknight (cinekill)
Larcen (cinekill)
Shadow (vendetta)
Jetta (vendetta)
Riptide (sudden death)

The EC series had some of the freshest ideas ever for a fighting game (along with a compelling storyline, one of the best ever in a fighting game) and opened new doors for upcoming 2d fighters if not all genres of fighting games. EC1&2 are indeed classics, gamers like myself play both games constantly to this day.
Great thread by the way. It's great to known that there are still gamers out there that appreciate oldschool classics.

Hmm.... Cinekills huh? To this day, I have yet to see every single characters (with the exception of hidden characters excluded) here are a few that I've seen, I hope that they're helpful:

Larcen- He has a bomb attached to him that detonates and explodes on impact.
Jetta- Her clothes being to come alive as they choke her to death on impact.
Raven- The snake on her leg comes alive and attacks her.
Riptide- She gets suffocated to death by live man-eating trees or plants.
Shadow- She gets both of her arms piered/tied down to a wall with shurikens, and gets a shuriken thrown her head (very painful).
Rax- All the robotic parts attached to his body explode/pop out on impact including his eye piece.
Dawson- He gets shot a few times.
Midknight- He has sunlight shed on him and burns to ashes.
Xavier- He has a portal thrown at him that sucks him up and absorbs him.

I still have yet to see Trident, Slash, Ramses III, and Blade's cinekills. So I'll be hard at work trying to acquire their's as I play the game later on. Sorry.

I never got the honor of playing this on the actual system but i have it for pc via emulator.

I really suck at it on keyboard LOL I've managed to see all the overkills but not the vendettas....

This game could have some massive potential on ps2 or xbox.

Raven rocks!

Eternal Champions for its time set a high standard for gore and realism that that mk 2 and 3 were not able to replicate. i have played Eternal Champions but never got around to seeing all the overkills(stage fatalities), vendettas(fatalites). then i found this link with all of them.

so of the stuff is well tought out.
