Hey all, I figured why not try something different and focus on the two love stories that have been either confirmed or implied to have occured throughout the MK storyline. Personally, while... admittingly these 2 love stories were kinda just inserted into Liu Kang, Kitana, Sonya and Johnny Cage's stories, I think going back to past games and adding a little development to it would help a lot. (Something Shaolin Monks failed to do.)
Anyway, Liu Kang and Kitana's love story I feel is the better of the two, I mean Shaolin Monks failed to really give it any proper development or sense of beginning, but both Liu Kang and Kitana are an important part of the other's story. Liu Kang gives Kitana hope and Kitana the same to Liu Kang. And Liu Kang's MK4 ending shows that it's really something of a tragic love story in that it can never be due to Liu Kang's responibilities as the Mortal Kombat Champion. I suppose MK:A will answer if they're to be or not. We'll see.
Johnny Cage and Sonya was also inserted, but at least Liu Kang and Kitana can say that they're relationship has had at least some development. Johnny Cage and Sonya obviously present each other as being like Han and Leia in The Empire Strikes Back. But we don't really know if these two are in love or not. We've just seen some minor implications like in Cage's MK:DA ending. (This at the very least implies that JC has a thing for Sonya, but does Sonya have a thing for him?)
Basically I think that Liu Kang and Kitana's relationship does have potential while Johnny Cage and Sonya's... is just sorta there.... (no offense to any JC/Sonya shippers... hehe)

Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way you do on this. What I wonder is, how far can they take the Liu Kang/Kitana love story?

Hmm... I like both but Liu Kang/Kitana seems better.

There is no evidence whatsoever that Johnny is in love with Sonya, besides the movies. The movies were not canon.
That's like saying that Scorpion loves Tanya because they both wear yellow.

Yah... I never understood why people constantly say there is a relationship between Sonya and Cage...in what game was there ever anything said about a relationship between the two of them?
Kitana/Liu isn't much better. Both are basically non existant. In MK II Liu and Kitana have no real interaction. In MK3 she comes out and thanks him. In MK4 suddenly she wants to marry him? Whatever.
Let's face it...there is no "love story" here with either couple. What happened is it was popular from the movie, fans have decided they liked it and imagine it being a bigger deal than it really is, and they just kinda randomly put it into the games with no explination.

Whether it was from the movies or just happened along the way, the Sonya/Cage thing just became "fanon." Same thing with Kano killing Sonya's partner. Never mentioned in any of the games, but it just became the accepted belief.
Looking at it at strictly face-value, I suppose Liu/Kitana wins by default because of the two, it was the only one directly addressed in MK4 and MK:DA. Although, as Anyanka pointed that, even then there wasn't much to it. It was just sort of thrown in.
In the end, it all depends really on how deeply you read into. I'm sure there are some who feel Mileena/Baraka is the best love story.
But playing along and filling in the blanks...my vote would have to go to Liu/Kitana.
Based mostly on that Kitana's my favorite character and I care about what happens to her. I originally hated the idea of them being in love, but after thinking about it, and based on what we know about the characters, it does make sense. I also like the tragic element to it...they can't be together, then Liu dies(and should stay dead, IMO).

Well said^
The only place I've seen Sonya/Cage ever together in the game was in Cage's deadly alliance ending. But, even then it looks like it's just the average random damsel in distress with a bunch of villians thrown in type flick.
I'd also say Kang/Kitana wins by default. It's going to be interesting how their "relationship" is going to be handled in MKA.

Im glad others have noticed that the Sonya/Cage thing has never really been in the games. Thought I was going a bit mad (or should that be madder). I believe it was hinted at in the comics as well as the films, but neither are canon. Ive also seen numerous posts about Sonya/Cage getting married, and it being a 'fitting end to their ongoing romance.' Which is just kinda ridiculous. Some people seem to be obsessed by it (not naming names but Im sure they know who they are lol).
I also think too much is read into the Kitana/Liu Kang thing. Im not sure they are/ were in love. I think it was kinda just more of an attraction thing. Again, it seems to have been explored more in the movies/comics than the games, but is certainly involved in both characters story unlike the Cage/Sonya thing.
I guess the outcome of this romance ultimately depends on the fate of Liu Kang, whether or not he is restored like his MKD ending.
They could do a few things.
1. Liu is restored and they live happily ever after.
2. Liu is restored but will not join Kitana in Edenia.
3. Kitana is fatally wounded and dies in Liu's arms giving it the whole 'I love You Liu....uuh...#cough blood#...close eyes....Everyone stands around and weeps' type stuff.
4. Liu is not restored and goes back to heaven, leaving Kitana once again in a state of unrest.
5. Liu is restored, wants to be with Kitana, BUT she surprises him by saying she's been banging Johnny Cage since he died, cause Sonya got a sex change into a man and Cage aint into that, and now Kitana prefers Cage's loving to Liu's.
Anyway. I actually hope the cliche thing happens that they live happily ever after. I can see both character appearing future games however, so who knows. But chances are they'll retire from the MK world, and only be mentioned in the background etc.
Which 'love' story wins? Again, Liu-Kitana by default.

Although I do like the Cage-Sonya pairing, I'm going to have to agree with the majority here and say that Kitana and Liu Kang win by default. At least there is an attraction hinted between them, if only a little.
Baraka-Mileena is certainly interesting. Definately falls into the "love/hate" category. Maybe some therapy would help them out. Though to be honest, I'm not really a fan of this pairing.
One that does get on my nerves though, is when Jade and Kung Lao get paired together as a companion pairing to Liu Kang and Kitana. I guess some people assume that since they're the best friends to Kitana and Kang that they should be slapped together. As far as I know, these two have had no interaction with each other at all storywise. So to me, it doesn't make sense to pair them up.
Oops, litle rant there, better stop now. I needed to let it out though, so hopefully that won't upset anybody.

ugh, I hate love stories in fighting games, and a game where you fight to the death with blood flying everywhere with fatalities makes it sick lol. But I'd have to say Cage/Sonya's is better. It's the only thing that Cage has going on for him.

That... didn't make much sense. Because if that's all Cage has going on for him, it's not very good then...
Liu-Kitana is actually better.
I love the Cage-Sonya relationship despite it not being mentioned or confirmed in the games, but storywise Liu-Kitana is obviously better because we at least know they both feel some sort of “love” towards each other. But the fact is that its been done badly in both games and movies. Its pretty boring, reason why I like the other pair better.
Its cute and even funny: The tough chick and the buffoon. The only official clues about this is Cages MKDA ending and the Mk4 official comic book (hints a sort of love scene with both cage and sonya), but that’s not enough. I only hope they get married in the end, would be a great ending for both characters. We could be told in their bio/ending how they both have cared for each other since the start, I rather have that then poor development through 4 games in a row.
But I agree, Liu-Kitana is better only because it has been confirmed they both love each other, not because its "deep".
EDIT: Lol, nevermind....I will use that if another fake "Im so innocent" post pops up.

I hate it when people try to start wars...
Anyway, I'm gonna go with Baraka/Mileena,
Liu Kang/Kitana. Kitana imo, is much better suited with Rain, Liu Kang is a monk isn't he? Anyway,
Sonya/Cage, although this was never mentioned in game, the movies and comics did and it worked well there, Cage the clumsy fool and Sonya the 'afraid to open up' kinda thing was cool, but thankfully it wasn't really discussed in MK because relationships in MK aren't interesting unless...
They fall apart violently which brings me to
Mileena/Baraka, this is the best relationship in the game because it was vicious, it could have just been lust, or just using each other, whichever it was it ended brilliantly in MKD with one killing the other. Mileena's being the more plausible imo.

I still don't understand why this is being discussed when there is no relationship between Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade.
The only real relationships are Kitana and Kang and Mileena and Baraka. Those are the only ones that have ever been mentioned in the games.

But why would Cage having a thing with Sonya be better than Liu/Kitana just because it's all he has going for him?
