Huh? Call me dumb if you will, but I thought Rain
was a selectable fighter in UMK3...unless this is some other version we're talking about here

Rain was only in Trilogy and I think the home versions of UMK3. You couldn't play as him in the actual arcade.
I thought that it was possible to fight AGAINST him when you pick one of the treasure boxes at the end, but dont' quote me on that. According to another recent thread, though, Rain was a total red herring in the arcade. Supposedly people have actually checked the ROM code, and he's not there. And, as others pointed out, if you watch the intro carefully, the text for his name is different, indicating that even the original game designers had to "hack" him into the intro.

I'm 99.0% sure he was in the Sega and Nintendo
versions of UMK3.
MKT had no original fighters in, they were all from
the previous games, I'm pretty sure...

Yup, he was in the home versions.
MKT actually used a completely new Johnny Cage, rather than taking the sprite straight out of MKII (like with Raiden, Baraka, etc). I always found that to be truly shocking, since almost every addition to MKT was of the "cut and paste" variety. I think there was some sort of legal problem with the original actor. Anyway I applaud them for going the extra mile and filming new graphics; it would have sucked to have everyone EXCEPT Johnny Cage.

Well yeah, I know they replaced Johnny cage, but
I didn't consider him to be an 'original' character.
I always wondered why Cage was different in MKT,
they used a guy called Daniel Pesina for Cage and the
Ninjas in MK1 and MK2, but John Turk did the Ninjas
for MK3, so something must've happened to Pesina!?

Rain is only in the opening attraction video for UMK3, there are 3 different things he does, combo Shao Kahn, victory pose, and fall over, depending on if you just turn the game on, win the game, or lose to the CPU. You'll even notice his name is written in a different font in the energy bar.
Rain appears in UMK3 for SNES and Genesis, and MKT for everything.

Noob Saibot is the one who is in the WaveNet version.
Rain is just a joke. He's purple and his name is Rain.......hence Purple Rain the song by Prince. Ed Boon is a fan of Prince or a hater. I forget which.
Also that hint about Rain being at the graveyard is a joke also. It's pretty much saying Prince died in the music biz.
Pretty neat idea thought up by Boon if you ask me.
But then Rain become a real character when UMK3 and MKT came out for the consoles.

There was no animating to do, they just added a pallet (which is simple since pallets are very small). The most difficult think would have been adding his name to the energy bar and it comes up differently either as part of the joke or because they added it in using built in game fonts instead of making a graphic for it like all the other energy bar names.
That is one reason why I voted for Rain on another thread of this board for being the best "Hidden Fighter/Rumor". He is still hidden to this day, and only a VS Screen code gives his whereabouts. Perhaps in the Graveyard when the Toasty Man appears you do something to fight him, who knows. In my opinon, if there is a cheat to access him in the arcade, I believe it has something to do with the Graveyard, Reptiles, and the Toasty Man. One, or all, or just 2/3 of those things. We at least known one special he would have had, and one combo by watching the demo if he was real. Reptile's 4 Hit Combo, and Reptile's Reverse Elbow Attack. He also has Reptile's fighting, and winning stances, all possible clues to his whereabouts. No one knows weather Rain is real, and no one really knows weather or not he is a hoax except for Ed Boon himself.
Well Rain has all of Reptile's moves cause he is just a simple swap of colors with Reptile. All they did was put Reptile in there with Purple clothes and named him Rain.
I'm pretty sure Rain is just a joke. It's all about Purple Rain/Prince.
1. Rain is purple = Purple Rain
2. Prince is dead in the music biz = Graveyard
I doubt Rain is still hidden to this day.

If you really enjoy torturing yourself and want to play Rain and can't find UMK3 for SNES/Genesis or MKT for N64/PSX you can always play Mortal Kombat Advance. Sure, it's the worst port ever and the CPU is cheaper than someone using gameshark, but Rain's playable. ;)

yep,Rain was only a joke in UMK3,he never was a playable character.and the message when you input the code was "Rain can be found at the graveyard".
i played him in UMK3 genesis and in MKT....i recommend you to play as him in the MKT version, the genesis and snes version sucks all the way....
fear the noob....

Rain is not playable. All the other hidden characters are listed in the audits menu, even before being unlocked, and there is no mention of Rain either as a fightable character or a playable character.
They used a new actor for Cage in MKT because the old one had severed his ties with Midway. All of the actors that appear in MKT where on good terms with Midway and anyone who wasn't is not in the game. That's why there's only 4 classic characters, they were the only old actors still around.

yo sup just go this game the other day Unlocked Rain he is amazing all you have to do is complete the game or the hardest difficulty setting and he is there to pick. You can cheat you way though to get him faster though try it and let me know if you got him.

Rain was a cheap gimmick in UMK3 arcade to keep you popping in the quarters. Clever!

What version are you talking about?

I doubt that, that is true. If you think of the fighter select screen, it would be completely uneven. It is well balanced out, and adding just one extra fighter would unbalance the furies, so to speak. Rain is one of those unknown fighters.
