mk4 was a war, not a tournament.
Thats what I am saying, kind of like Sub-Zero_7th said. A challenge to Mortal Kombat, so I and many others refer to it as a tournament, for short and since their was Mortal Kombat involved.

Even though I said he challenged him, it doesn't mean it was a tournament or anything.
Like Raiden said in the beginning of the MKDA intro: "Mortal Kombat has always been and always will be."
So this goes to even before the time of the actual Mortal Kombat tournament's creation.
Basically, Mortal Kombat doesn't necessarily refer to a tournament, but more so a struggle between two opposing forces.

It doesnt matter if MK2- MK4 wasnt a real tournament... it was a threat and counted as a Mortal Kombat battle. Read Liu Kang's tomb in the arena section in MK Deception, he has 4 medallions to commemorate his 4 Mortal Kombat victories. He was credited with ending all the menace in MK1-MK4.
