I've never played UMK3, but I play alot of MKT. I'm curious to see which you guys think is better: MK Trilogy or Ultimate MK3? Also what are the main differences between the two, besides MKT having more characters...

huh? someone actually asked this?..lmao j/k
well, mkt is in every way better. the home versions of umk3 sucked..the arcade version is the best version..mkt had more characters..more combos, "tighened" up gameplay..play umk3, then mkt and youll see what i mean.
the graphics are really sloppy on the gen and snes versions of the game (umk3) id say the saturn is the best version home version of umk3.

The only thing good about MKT is that it has all the characters from the pervious MK's. UMK3 is better IMO. Like Scorpio said the best version of UMK3 that isn't the arcade is on the Saturn.

Yrah, but that's the problem, sho has a Saturn here? Probably nobody. I'm sure that if UMK3 was released for PSX, and you compared them, then you'd probably think that the colors are nicer on UMK3, simply because of memory availability. Like, MK3 for psx, compared to MKT, has better colors and stuff, it's noticable particularly on Kung Lao's costume. But I'd still pick MKT for PSX or PC any day, the gameplay is really smooth and there are more characters and moves and stuff. MKT is like an upgrade to UMK3.

I prefer MKT by far
but the only good thing about UMK3 vs MKT is the character balance...no cheap Noob, bosses, and Rain but those last character are cool however.

Overall MKT. It's kind of hard to say otherwise just because it has sooo much. It's just a huge game.
But when you break it down, MKT is actually weaker than UMK3(and MK3) in some ways.
When it comes to presentation I would actually give the nod to the original MK3. I love the pictures in the intro and the old stages being in MKT take away from the atmoshere. Also when it comes to story I think UMK3 and MKTs rosters are actually TOO big. All the ninjas they added have outragous, mystical storylines that add very little to the main theme(post apocalpytic earth). Characters like Rain and Noob just take away from the main conflict.
UMK3 and MK3 are FAR more polished than MKT. Every version of MKT is glitchy and halfassed. MK3 and UMK3 feel like a better designed, consistent package, while MKT often feels and looks like a train wreck, cut and paste job.

MKT was just a fan service game, had it been the same speed as UMK3, I think people would have liked it more. The problem is there weren't any systems at the time that could handle a good enough port of UMK3 or even MK3, the sounds are so muffled and tinny, the sprites are smaller and less detailed, frames hacked out here and there. If they could redo MKT with all the available frames and what not they had to leave out, and the full quality sounds and graphics, add the backgrounds they didn't put in it, and bring the speed back to UMK3 land, I'd buy it again for $40 even if they didn't fix anything about the broken characters lol.

MKT definitely is less polished. For example, in the sound department, notice how the music just cuts off at the end of a round. MK3 and UMK3 would play a sort of "ending" to whatever song was playing when the end finished. Also, the music would change when FINISH HIM came on; I'm pretty sure the music just stays the same in MKT.
Another little thing is Shao Khan's death sequence. Instead of adding all the extra stages when the stages are supposed to all flash by, it just fades to black (skipping the stage flash sequence entirely).
Then of course you have added characters that dont' have any endings or storylines (beat the game with Kintaro and select the first reward; it just goes straight to the credits).
The intro is just scrolling text; nothing cool like in UMK3.
And the graphics really ARE better in the arcade... I never noticed this until I got into MAME. I was plying UMK3 for a while, then I popped in Trilogy for PSX, and for the first time I noticed how much of a hit the graphics took.
In terms of pure gameplay however, I like Trilogy better.

Here's a quick side by side comparison of the graphics quality, the one on the left is UMK3 arcade at 1X size, the other is MKT PSX fractally resized to be the same, so there's no distorion. You can see how blurry the MKT sprites are, it'd be nice to see sprites of the quality on the left in a new MKT.

I have a Saturn... so someone has one. I'm pretty sure Sakura has one too since she has nearly every copy of MK ever made.

i also have a saturn and i got umk3. if you dont think about the loading times, umk3 overall is slightly better than mkt for many reasons everyone else stated. i also own mkt (on the saturn) and the differences between the 2 are noticable. the only reason mkt wins my favor is because of it including almost everything from previous mk's.
p.s. i've always wanted to play with kintaro

I do indeed have a Saturn. I've got 3 MK games for it too(MK II, UMK3, MKT).

How is MKT on Saturn? Anyway you can get screen shots or video clips?
Also, you guys gotta make sure you're playing the greatest hits version, or the "non-buggy" version that doesn't say greatest hits, you'll know this if you try something like Noob's teleport, then juggle two LPs and teleport again, if he doesn't teleport, that's the revised version. It's a complete and total replica of the UMK3 engine, just faster, and with the intentionally added and tweaked stuff. Look past the loading time, put on all the short cuts, I still prefer UMK3 to MKT, but MKT is a ton of fun.

lol even there you're being generous. you have the texture smoothing on in epsxe i imagine. when i play it on my flat screen tv, i almost don't want to get to close to the tv. i'm afraid the jaggies will cut me.
for the topic at hand, umk3 arcade IS the ultimate. still the best mk to date.

lol I totally forgot about that, here is Jax 1X size for both with Jax PSX enlarged in the middle compared if they were the same size.

MKT Saturn is almost identical to PSX.
The CGI of the Dragon symbol turning around in the intro is gone.
The sound effects for the robots yelling and grunting is messed up, it's like they're a higher pitch.
The transparancy effects(like Chameleon, Smoke's smoking, flames, ect.) look terrible. A common problem with Saturn games.
The sound from Motaro's teleport plays when you fill up the Aggressor meter.
Other than those differences and very minor controller issues(like switching to the Classic versions is now start, since there is no select button on the Saturn pad) it's almost exactly the same...glitches and all.

Anyone happen to know if the PC version is based on the buggy or non-buggy version of the PSX? I'll have to try that Noob thing when I get home.

People have said it was better, but I think without any real reason to.
Thanks for the info on MKT for Saturn though.
The PC version of MKT shares similarities from both the buggy and revised version of MKT on PSX. All the actually programmed modifactions for balancing, like removing of infinites and such were done for the PC version I believe, however the lesser gravity and things like that are still there sorta.

i got my mkt for saturn cause at the time i didnt have a psx. but after playing the saturn version then the psx version i too like the saturn version better. it dont seem as buggy and i like the sound effects better...dont ask why lol. but there arent any differences worth mentioning between the pc, psx, and saturn versions. i still play my mkt for saturn. i wish there was a true mkt tho, with all versions of all characters and stages.

You probably mean with MK4/Gold, MKDA and MKD but I would have liked the original MKT to have had ALL the stages from MK1,2,3 - sure there was many, and most were very good but...
-where were these:
Palace Gates?
Shang Tsung's Throneroom?
The Warrior Shrine?
I mean, they had all the others, why not add these three? The last two were favs of mine and I would have liked to have them in MKT, ah well.
They should have had MK1 Shang Tsung and MK1 Reptile (with the freeze/spear/slide) also as playable. Just highlight Shang of Rep and press select to get their former look/moves.
-For the next compilation they should have EVERY fighter, level and look ever in Mortal Kombat games, then maybe I'd be satisfied. Actualy I still find something to complain about!
