More broken and unbalanced. By that you mean having less top tier characters compared to it's full roster? MvC2 consists of Magneto, Storm, Sentinel, Cable, rarely Iron Man or Spiral, and sometimes a random assists only character like CapCom or Psylocke. Out of 56 characters, 5 are truly top tier.
MKT's top tier you have (not including bosses) Noob, Rain, Kabal, H Smoke, MK2 Kung Lao, Baraka, Kano, Nightwolf, Reptile, Ermac, Kung Lao, Robo Smoke, Sindel, Jax and if you want to consider Chameleon in there too, that's 15 of 33. Almost half the roster is usable in high level play, however, Noob is considered to be God tier, and usually that automatically bans him from play, but I don't mind people using him against me because I play him like it's Kabal. Even if you want to take out the bottom of the top tier, like Jax and Sindel, that's still 13 of 33, about 4 times the usability of MvC2. In UMK3 the top 10 characters are all still present in MKT's top 15, and that's out of 23 characters, still a good ratio considering most games' top tier consists of less than 1/4 the roster.

More broken then MvC2? Lets not get crazy here. I mean less then 1/10th of the characters in MvC2 are used in tournies. MKT has a far greater percentage of useable characters. There are definate top tier characters, but its not like MvC2 where not using a top tier character pretty much ensures a loss. The 2nd string tier is pretty hefty.

I had owned both MK3 and MKT for ps1. But i get the feelings if i was a abaragain store and i saw both of the games for the same price, i think ill be inclined to get MK3 again for some reason. I dunno, i think maybe its because it was my 95% near arcade perfect MK game and had alot sleepness nights when it first came out.
Its been a long time since I've played the DOS versions of MK3/MKT and the PSX version of MKT (can't remember if I have ever played the PSX verison of MK3-- I might have)...
- I'm gonna assume that MK3 PSX is the same as MK3 PC other than the colours issue which I noted below. Also, when I refer to the MK3 PC version, I'm referring to the original DOS version. I remember there was a Windows version which was announced as a 16-bit colour which was supposed to come out before MKT, I'm not sure if they actually released it though.
- I think the MK3 PC version was only 256 colours instead of 16-bit (which MKT was), so the graphics were slightly worse, but for the most part I don't think it was a huge difference (I think the PSX version of MK3 had the same colour depth as the arcade version).
- Certain MK1/MK2/UMK3 characters in MKT looked pretty bad compared to the returning MK3 characters, I remember when MKT came out, a lot of reviews cited Scorpion as looking a little blocky. The MK1 characters look pretty blurry. The likely cause is that it was a small-time team which ported new content (I think it was like 2 or 3 people), and they were inexperienced.
- MK3 PC's music is almost faithful to the arcade version. Both MK3 & MKT used redbook audio (the type you can play in a CD player), likely because it was a measure to prevent piracy since back then there was no way to pirate that type of music. The reason why MK3 PC's music isn't perfect to the arcade is because some levels (Like the rooftop) have a slightly different version of the music playing in the 2nd round from the first round (Theres a slight intro before the choir kicks in singing in the 1st round); MK3 PC (nor MKT) replicated this because they used redbook audio.
- MK3 PC had the Finish Him music intact, and the Fatality chime as well. MKT did not have the Finish Him music at all if I recall correctly, and the Fatality chime didn't sound right (it was mistimed or something).
- MK3 PC had the wind blowing visuals & sound effects in the bridge/street. I don't recall if MKT had this, I think it didn't, someone could correct me on this.
- MKT uses the wrong music in certain places. Most notably, I think the Kombat Tomb and the Portal are wrong. This occurs in both the PSX & PC versions, as they are identical.
- MKT has some cheap easy to pull off (ie a not so greatly skilled, but decent player, and sometimes a button masher, like me could do it) infinite combos with Noob Saibot & Rain. I think some other characters may have had them as well. MK3 had infinites, but they were harder to pull off, you'd have to practice the timing for hours to do them.
- Kung Lao MK2 has raiden's diving move for some reason. It makes him a little cheap IMO.
- The MK1/MK2 character's combos look pretty cheesy.
- Overall, MKT felt like it was thrown together, it doesn't have the polish that MK3 had. But I still played the hell out of MKT with my brother when it first came out.
I'd rather see a more faithful version of MKT come out with proper music, less glitchy/infinite moves/combos, and cleaner graphics. I doubt it will ever happen though, I think the combination of MK:SM (going back to MK1/MK2) and MK:A (having all characters and *potentially* all stages) will satisfy the urge for that. Theres only one thing that I hope for in MK:A though, that they bring back the Pit levels (and let you actually fight on the pit). All they'd need to do is disable sidestepping (or making the pit wider like in SM), and with them saying they are bringing back the arial game, it will make it that much better.

The MK1 characters looked kind of muddy in MKT, mainly because they just looked like that in MK1. I believe thats why they went so far as to create a new ending pose for MK1 Kano, the original one just looked too bad.
They didn't do much retouching in MK1, which is why the Ninja pallet swaps are so sloppy, i.e. the pallet looks really thrown on top of the graphic on Sub and Reptile.
Also, it sounds like, judging by the fact you reference a very easy infinite with Noob Saibot , that you played one of the earlier versions of MKT. There were a hand full of versions of MKT for PSX, the final one being the Greatest Hits version which was considerably better then the previous versions. They still didn't do much to balance Rain out by that point, but overall the gameplay is good. MKT for PC is a direct port of an earlier version of MKT for PSX, so it does not have the same quality of gameplay as Greatest Hits MKT does.
Also, there was a lot of very heavy brokenness in MK3 as well. I don't know the home versions that well because I never had the PSX version and I never got the PC version to work until I ran it in DosBox on my newer computer. MKT had characters that were overpowered, but MK3 had universal aspects that were overpowered, like roundhouses not pushing out of the corner, often allowing for many roundhouses. And plus, in MK3 Kabal was even more deadly then he was in UMK3 or MKT, where he was still pretty much king of the hill. Jax was extremely deadly because he didn't have the recharge time on his projectile that was added later, and Sub Zero was insanely abuseable because of the non-existance of rules on his Ice Clone.
It is a shame though that in MKT, a lot of the work that was done to balance out the characters from MK3 in UMK3 was undone by adding more unbalanced characters, like Noob, Rain,MK2 Kung Lao, etc.
MK2 Kung Lao in particular is just too good. Raiden's superman move doesn't have much to do with it though. He is insanely fast, has extremely easy combos that lead to infinites and, like all the other MK2 characters except for Raiden, he does MK2 level damage (even the redone Johnny Cage does MK2 level damage for some oddball reason).
MK2 Kung Broken has been trying his hardest to inspire Mugen character makers to create a MUGEN game with MKT gameplay, improved to be more balanced and UMK3 like, with Arcade quality graphics. Perhaps someday it will happen.

I loved Trilogy. I used to have nostalgia, and reenactment matches all the time.
What I miss from MK3 on the PSX, is the carpet in the Bank. I don't like the Rooftop's stone MK logo in the other versions. I love the carpet, it looked so cool.
Lol, hey MK2KungBroken, did you get your name from MKT's MKII Kung Lao being broken?

I too prefer the carpet in the Bank. They have that in MKT, as well.
And I do believe that's where he got his name, since MK2 Kung Lao is a broken beast. I mean just look at ho wmuch damage his combos do when they are blocked! Its nuts.

Yes that's why I made this name.
I have recently gotten through the heads of the Mugen MK makers a bit and they are started to work on gameplay aspects, and send it to me to try out. It'll happen eventually. Right now I'm more looking forward to the inevitable hacking of the arcade roms like the Genesis UMK3 hack.

Having someone that knows the mechanics of MK, more than it's own creators should help alot. You'd have a promising future in the gaming industry, hell, even as a tester.
dreemernj, I don't remember the Bank having the carpet in the PSX Trilogy. It's been about 2 years since I had it though, so I could be wrong.
