He was in the final release of MK3...it's called UMK3.

i think what he means is why wasn't he in "normal" MK3, thats a bloody good question, since Ed Boon loves the guy so much!

This is what I've often wondered, the only thing I can think of is that they wanted to put Scorpion in the game, but they couldn't think of a story for him so then when a lot of people complained about his absence, they put him in UMK3

I read somewhere that Sub-Zero killed Scorpion in mk2,so his soul could not come back from the netherealm(just like j.c)lol.

I think he was just put for no apperant reason in umk3

this may be the closest to the truth:

scorpion had seen young subz spare someones life in MK2, and scorpion took it upon himself to look after this new sub-zero, and having no reasons to be there, went back to nether-realm.

so it might be said that scorpion wasn't activley taking part in the fighting, and just looking out for sub-zero.

I don't think it's for scenaristic purposes that scorpion isn't in MK3.
I rather think Ed Boon wanted to take a new direction for his series, about the characters and about the gameplay as well, that's why he has decided to change so many things, indeed :

1) he has thrown all the classic ninjas away (reptile and classic sub zero aren't in mk3 neither) and also some other important characters, like cage and raiden.

2) he has created a completely different general design about the costumes; the characters in mk3 look more like marvel/comic heroes, for example he mixes pieces of armor and pieces of clothing much more than before (jax, kabal, kung lao, the 3 robot ninjas...) and gives some characters a very "kitch" looking with these kind of tights (shang tsung, sindel, sub zero) while the designs of mk1 and mk2 were quite similar.

3) the appearance of the hand to hand combo system.

4) the appearance of the run button.

all of that show pretty well that he just was in the "let's change as many things as possible" state of mind (probably not to bore the players besides), and since scorpion and some others were important characters, he just has removed them.

I read that Midway was running out of time because of deadlines and crap and because of this they didn't have enough time to put Scorpion in it. Then the backlash started to bring Scorpion back in and then they made UMK3.

the upgrade was always planned,but with deadlines i guess they figured establish the Outworld invasion plot first as this was the main plot of mk3 he didn't fit in as he was neither an outworld warrior or chosen earth warrior.I wanna see Scorpion protecting sub zero from sektor etc... elaborated on more in a future mk (like shaolin monks shows mk1 and 2 events etc...)

Like all great fighting games (with the xception of KOF, but thats outa the question....) Boon saw that it needed a change of diretion to give the series new life, not much good it did tho lol. if that meant that he had to take characters out, then so be it, mind u, that said, scorps was kinda kick-ass, too much mabye?

This is EXACTLY what happened.

However, the upgrade to UMK3 was planned even before the backlash at excluding Scorpion, since UMK3 is basically the MK3 the development team really wanted.

And Scorpion wasn't the ONLY deadline victim in MK3. Kitana, Jade, Reptile, and Mileena were deadline victims, too. The "ninja" versions of Noob Saibot and Smoke were also deadline victims (hence, they had to use Kano sprites for Noob, and Sektor/Cyrax sprites for Smoke tied him to Sektor and Cyrax's storyline to back it up, and really had no sprites to work with for the rest). Now they really could've used ANY male characters' sprites for Noob with the absence of the Scorpion sprites. I think they picked Kano because his outfit looked the most like the MK1/MK2 ninja costumes.

I never knew that was a Kano sprite! In Mortal Kombat Trilogy and UMK3, it's a regular ninja's sprite though, right?

There is a fine line between deadlines and deadliness, and I think it was worth the wait seeing as how it was over 10 years ago and we've all gotten about 1 trillion times more play out of UMK3 than we ever would have gotten from MK3.

I've heard here from the forums that Cyrax was originally Scorpion,but the team realized that if they make Scorpion cyborg,they'll ruin his potential.So they give the Cyborg Scorpion name Cyrax.I think that the harpoon that has R.Smoke was originally for Cyber Scorpion (Cyrax).IF thats true...

Yes, that was what Cyrax was originally supposed to be, but they quickly scrapped the idea.

Scorpion didn't make MK3 because the actor who played him (as well as Cage and other male ninjas) was fired between MK2 and MK3. Best guess is, since MK3 was kinda "work in progress" and UMK3 meant as the finished product, they didn't have the complete footage from the new actor ready in time, except for a radically changed Sub Zero. Same with the female ninjas, although the original actress wasn't fired, her and a couple of others were involved in a lawsuit against Midway.

Yeah, but BEFORE they gave him the name of "Cyrax", they didn't have a name for him or Sektor, so Tony Goskie came up with the names "Mustard" and "Ketchup" for him and Sektor, respectively (funny names, actually. They even had those names programmed in the game on beta versions, and I wish they would've stuck permanently.)


Actually, Scorpion and the rest of the UMK3 male ninjas were played by MK3 Sub-Zero/Shang Tsung actor John Turk. I think the reason they cut Scorpion and the rest of the male ninjas, as well as the female ninjas, from MK3 was because the deadline was approaching, and I guess they wanted some room for the new characters, and the deadline wouldn't allow any room for the resulting MK3 cast AND the male and female ninjas. That is my guess.


Yeah. Katarin Zamiar was not working for Midway, so how can you fire someone who's not even on your payroll? lol. Same with Elizabeth Maleki (MK1 Sonya) and Dr. Phillip Ahn, MD (MK2 Shang Tsung), which is why they had John Turk doing Sub-Zero AND Shang Tsung in MK3, as well as a Playboy Playmate named Kerri Hoskins playing Sonya in MK3 (this wasn't the first time Kerri Hoskins was digitized in a Midway game, though; About a year or two before MK3 came out, she played a cheerleader in NBA Jam). Now, I have no clue why Eddie Wong ended up playing Liu Kang in MK3 instead of Ho Sung Pak (even though Ho Sung Pak wasn't even involved in the Midway lawsuit that involved the other three actors).
