Developer Announces End of Mortal Kombat 11 DLC
NetherRealm now working on new title.

It's been a little over two and a half years since Mortal Kombat 11 was first announced with a trailer during The Game Awards. Now NetherRealm Studios has said goodbye to the hugely successful sequel, formally announcing an end to downloadable content support. Read on for details:

The announcement came via the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account, dashing the hopes of a fourth wave of additional downloadable characters, while also sparking widespread speculation about a sequel to the 2017 DC Comics fighting game: Injustice 2.

Mortal Kombat 11 proved to be the complete package: a polished production from the outset that dramatically increased content with the sale of 13 additional characters, including pre-order bonus Shao Kahn, and an expansion of the already robust Story Mode feature with Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath -- a first for the series!

The late 2020 release of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate contended with several firsts of its own, bringing the game to next generation hardware on PlayStation 5 with cross-generation support, while much of the world was still in lockdown in the grip of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the first indications NetherRealm Studios was moving on came with their return to work early this year, and motion capture for "the next show". The developer's announcement has seemingly confirmed it will be for material found in their next release. The studio has also continued to fill significant job positions, undeterred by a rumored sale, corporate maneuverings, and the establishment of new parent company, Warner Bros Discovery.

Exactly what's coming next remains to be seen. Creative Director Ed Boon inadvertently created soeculation for a Marvel versus DC crossover game with innocuous tweets about the respective movie studios, while a poll about remastered titles more deliberately started Shaolin Monks trending just last month. An international ratings listing for a klassic remaster called "Mortal Kombat Kollection Online" emerged in 2020, but has yet to yield any results.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms Red Band Trailer
MK paints the town red!

If the first official trailer for the upcoming animated sequel Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms didn't seem bloody enough for you -- you're in luck! There'll be no waiting for the red band trailer this time! Warner Bros Entertainment has unleashed the alternate trailer showing more action and additional scenes. Take a look if you don't mind spoilers:

The trailer immediately distinguishes itself with a street scene showing Tarkatan warriors violently attacking a man and woman carrying a baby through the city. It can be inferred the infant is Liu Kang (Jordan Rodrigues), rescued from the Outworld killers in a last minute attack by Raiden (David B. Mitchell).

The red band trailer then sets the scene with various contextual clips shown in the first trailer, punctuated with a flurry of special moves, violence, and bloody scenes with X-ray attacks reminiscent of those seen in Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge.

Meat is on the menu as Netherrealm demons and Outworld Tarkatans are carved and ripped apart by the likes of Scorpion (Patrick Seitz) and Kitana (Grey Griffin). Jax (Ike Amadi) exercises his new cybernetic arms against Kintaro, D'Vorah busts balls kicking Johnny Cage (Joel McHale), and Sonya Blade (Jennifer Carpenter) spoils the hopes & dreams of Li Mei fans!

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms Trailer
Action packed animated first look!

The warriors of Earthrealm and Outworld will do battle in a final tournament to end all tournaments in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, but this time the stakes are much bigger than the two warring sides. This time the battle will decide the fate of all worlds! Watch the first exciting trailer for the upcoming animated feature:

Liu Kang (Jordan Rodrigues) strides into the koliseum to confront Shao Kahn (Fred Tatasciore) in the opening seconds of the trailer. He is the chosen one, a pure soul watched over by the gods since birth, but to obtain victory he'll have to get past Shang Tsung (Artt Butler) and an eclectic assembly of Outworld warriors!

The loose of adaptation of the original plot to Mortal Kombat II looks to be taking plenty of liberties to expand the fighting roster and incorporate more of the cosmic mythology of the franchise's later years. Among Outworld's representatives will be later additions to the series: Reiko (Robin Atkin Downes), Li Mei, and D'Vorah (Debra Wilson). They'll face animated newcomers Kung Lao (Matt Yang King), Stryker (Matthew Mercer).

The animated sequel to last year's Scorpion's Revenge will also continue the saga of the titular ninja spectre. With his destiny altered by the first film, he undertakes a new mission to secure an ancient kamidogu and prevent the coming of One Being. The trailer teases his fight through Hell, the fury of Shinnok, and the coming of Kuai Liang (Bayardo De Murguia)!

The second Sub-Zero can be seen in official hi-res box art and during the trailer, which previews his quest to avenge his fallen brother, and struggles with cybernetically converted clansmen Sektor (Dave B. Mitchell) and Cyrax.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms will officially be released on blu-ray and digital on August 31st! The second Mortal Kombat Legends animated feature will continue where Scorpion's Revenge left off, forcing Raiden (David B Mitchell) into a post-tournament agreement with Shao Kahn that will take Earthrealm's greatest champions into Outworld itself for an epic battle for survival!

The plot adapts the renegade tournament of the Mortal Kombat II video game, but will also incorporate elements of Mortal Kombat: Deception and Mortal Kombat X tie-in comics, sending Scorpion (Patrick Seitz) on a quest to recover the ancient kamidogu to prevent the "resurrection" of One Being, and the total annihilation of everything in existence. Read the full press release and story outline below [via Blu-Ray.com]:

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms picks up shortly after the explosive finale of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, the 2020 blockbuster hit that initiated these animated films – which are based on one of the most popular videogame franchises in history. In Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, our team of heroes are besieged by the enemy forces of Shao Kahn – forcing Raiden and his group of warriors into a deal to compete in a final Mortal Kombat that will determine the fate of the realms. Now our heroes must travel to Outworld in order to defend Earthrealm and, simultaneously, Scorpion must find the ancient Kamidogu before it's used to resurrect the One Being – which would mean certain destruction of all things in the universe. Time is short and the stakes are high in this action-packed continuation of the Mortal Kombat journey.

Joel McHale (Community, Stargirl) and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) return to their lead roles as Hollywood star-turned-fighter Johnny Cage and all-business warrior Sonya Blade, respectively. Rumor: MK Legends: Battle of the Realms Box Art Leaked
Liu Kang leaps onto cover!

The Mortal Kombat Legends animated universe will officially expand this summer with the home video release of its first sequel: Battle of the Realms. Purported box art for the 4K Blu-Ray has leaked, revealing a trio of characters expected to play a significant role. Take a look:

Self-proclaimed "industry insider" GeekGab posted the artwork to Twitter, which shows a painterly image of Liu Kang leaping to action flanked by Sub-Zero and Raiden. The simple compositional style is similar to Scorpion's Revenge box art, placing the characters over the dragon logo and a colourful background.

An initial report revealed a substantial amount of cast information, confirming Kuai Liang will assume the mantle of Sub-Zero from his deceased older brother, just as he famously did in Mortal Kombat II. Actor Bayardo De Murguia (Tiny Pretty Things, Fast & Furious Spy Racers) will voice the younger Lin Kuei warrior.
