Australia moves forward with the introduction of an R18+ rating!

In relation to our past article, the Standing Council of Attorney'sGeneral meeting has reported an agreement in-principle between the many states and territories of Australia concerning the introduction of an R18+ rating system for video games.

Eight out of nine states agreed with an R18+ rating introduction, New South Wales being the only one to abstain. However, the Federal Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O'Connor, has stated that the adult rating is going through with or without the consent of NSW and it's expected to be implemented before the end of the year!

Gaming websites Kotaku and R18games have full and extensive reports concerning everything related to the R18+ introduction in Australia.

Via Gamespot's live stream, Brendan O'Connor has stated that he expects the new rating system to be implemented in Australia in a few months. He also stated that regardless of NSW's Attorney decision, Greg Smith, the Commonwealth is ready to overrule NSW if they still oppose to the changes making it the only state that will not be selling R18+ video games.

Considering NSW didn't say "no" to the rating system, and their own statement of not wanting to be "the odd one out", according to Brendan O'Connor, it sounds like the possibility of implementing the new rating before the end of the year is very positive.

ABC.net.au has a Press release with Brendan O'Connor's statement regarding this subject. From their article:

"This is a big step forward in the long running debate on classification of computer games for adults," Mr O'Connor said. "The introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games will provide better advice to parents and help prevent children and teenagers from accessing unsuitable material. Once introduced, the new classification will also afford adults the opportunity to view material designed for adults. It is a credit to all jurisdictions that the meeting has now been able to achieve agreement over what is a complex matter in classification policy. I thank all jurisdictions for their support for what is not just a practical public policy, but also very popular policy."

These are indeed good news for all Australian gamers and Mortal Kombat fans.

Meanwhile, South Australia's AG, John Rue, is planing to remove the MA15+ classification in his own state by putting stickers on all MA15+ rated games. He has confirmed that this plan has been approved by the South Australian Government.

Freddy Krueger MK Bio, New Gameplay Footage, and Interview with Ed Boon!

Following the announcement of Freddy Krueger this Thursday at Comic-Con, the Official Mortal Kombat Website has been updated with a new character section featuring his biography along side special quotes that make reference to this sinister character:

"A malevolent spirit of the Dream Realm, Freddy Krueger preys on the souls of the living as they sleep. When Shao Kahn began to steal Earthrealm's souls - souls Freddy considered his own - Freddy battled the emperor in the Dream Realm. But Shao Kahn's will was too strong. He pulled Freddy into the real world, where he was mortal, and defeated him. A badly injured yet determined Freddy fitted both his hands with demonically enhanced razor gloves. Once he has killed Shao Kahn he will find a way back to the Dream Realm, where he will torment Earthrealm's souls for eternity."

Shortly after Freddy's reveal, gaming website PlayStation.Blog secured an interview with the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon, in which he discusses his reasons for choosing "The Prince of Fear" as a DLC character, Freddy's powers in the fighting arena, Rain's true origins, Kenshi, and much more. From the interview:

PSB: So what is the inspiration for bringing Freddy Krueger to Mortal Kombat as a DLC character?

EB: It was a number of things. It’s kind of hard to choose a character who would fit well into the Mortal Kombat universe, with the blood and violence that’s so associated with it. Kratos from God of War is a brutal, bloody character, so he makes sense. When we had the discussions about the DLC characters, we knew that we wanted to add a returning character, a new character, but also a guest character. That was one of the goals right from the beginning. A number of names were run by us: Jason, Michael Meyers and all those guys. Freddy Kreuger, we felt, was the most instantly recognizable and he fits in with Mortal Kombat with his claws. It just seemed like the best fit."

Update #1: A new video featuring Freddy with extended gameplay footage has been revealed:

Thanks to our forum member KITANA for the heads-up!

Freddy will be released Tuesday August 9th on Xbox Live and Playstation Network for 400 Microsoft Points and $4.99 respectively. He is also the final quarter of the Season Pass which is available now!

Freddy Krueger Kreates a Nightmare in MK!
One, Two, Freddys Koming for You....

NetherRealm Studios have announced the 'mysterious' Fourth DLC kombatant at this years Mortal Kombat Panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The legendary sinister and malevonent, horror movie icon, Freddy Krueger from the highly popular A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise.

"Freddy Krueger "The Bastard Son of one hundred Maniacs" is a fictional character from the A Nightmare on Elm Street series of horror films. He was created by Wes Craven and has been portrayed by actor Robert Englund in every film until recently with Jackie Earle Haley taking the role. He is an undead serial killer and child molester who can attack his victims supernaturally from within their own dreams and nightmares. Freddy is commonly identified by his burnt face, his red and green sweater, a fedora hat, his trademark metal-clawed glove, and sadistic and witty persona..."

"Freddy Krueger is set to Invade the Mortal Kombat Tournament..."

This incarnation of Freddy is using his likeness from the latest film, played by Jackie Earle Haley as opposed to being modelled on the original actor, Robert Englund.Making an impressive transition from Film to Video Game, Freddy now wields two of his infamous Bladed Gloves which can also be used as a Projectile and a Ground Pop-up or used vigorously in combo's and strikes whilst in kombat. Other nods to his supernatural prowess include a Fiery Teleport and more! His X-Ray involves impaling his victim in their lungs with his gloves and then swiping all four blades across his opponents face. Both of his Fatalities are partially shown. The first one being reminiscent of a scene in the first Nightmare on Elm Street film where the opponent is dragged underground and then a geyser of blood bursts forth, and the second one involves Freddy summoning his trusty old Furnace, locking the opponent within it and in the process severing their arm and burning them to a crisp, incinerating them...

Freddy is released Tuesday August 9th on Xbox Live and Playstation Network for 400 Microsoft Points and $4.99 respectively. Hhe is also the final quarter of the Season Pass which is available now!

Voting on Adult Classification for games in Australia to be Delayed!

In relation to our articles concerning the decision to ban Mortal Kombat in Australia, GameSpot AU is reporting that the voting on the introduction of an R18+ classification for video games is likely to be delayed once again.

The voting will take place this Friday at the Standing Committee of Attorney's General meeting (SCAG). Australian gamers remain hopeful, but, the NSW Attorney-General's department reports that Greg Smith, New South Wales Attorney, will not be voting in favor of this issue. From GameSpot's report:

"In May this year, GameSpot AU canvassed the opinion of all nine federal, state, and territory censorship ministers on the issue of R18+ for games. The poll revealed that six out of nine states and territories--the federal government, Tasmania, Queensland, South Australia, Northern Territory, and the ACT--were in support of introducing the adult rating for games in Australia. The remaining three states--NSW, Victoria, and Western Australia--declared they would make their final decision in the lead-up to the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (SCAG) meeting this Friday."

"Now, the NSW Attorney-General's department is declaring that the NSW Attorney-General Greg Smith will not be voting on the R18+ for games issue."

In addition, a spokesperson for Smith declared to GameSpot AU that they "want to wait to see the results of the ALRC (Australian Law Reform Commission) classification review." The ALRC review is not excepted to be complete until early next year.

In order for the Adult Rating System to be introduced in Australia, a consensus needs to be reached between all of Australia's state, territory, and federal governments.

Mortal Spotlight: MKO Q&A with Shane Jones!
Shane Warren Jones Talks Like a Robot in Special Interview with MKO!

Programmed to Fight -- Cyrax as he appears in Mortal Kombat: Legacy!Comic-Con International 2011 runs July 20-24 and it's there that -- after a month a half's wait -- fans will finally get their chance to glimpse the long awaited ninth episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy!

Featuring a surprise spotlight on Cyrax [pictured right] and Sektor; the episode will tell the tale of Lin Kuei warriors fated to become unfeeling, mechanized weapons. With a design borrowed from the latest Mortal Kombat video game, the episode speaks directly to fans, spotlighting the MK3 additions in a curious close to a series that featured mainstream icons like; Sonya (Jeri Ryan), Jax (Michael Jai White), Scorpion (Ian Anthony Dale), Raiden (Ryan Robbins), and more.

The unexpected delay in schedule already has many speculating about what lies ahead at Comic-Con, which has become one of the most reported launching pads for new and existing projects. With an uncensored BluRay release already on the cards, possibilities of a television expansion, or feature film, remain open.

In anticipation of the episode and the series' conclusion, Mortal Kombat Online took the opportunity to talk to Shane Warren Jones before he officially becomes a cyborg assassin. The actor stars in dual roles as both Cyrax and lesser known Malibu Comics creation, Hydro. MKO probed him for more on that surprising twist, as well as his experiences with the series and hopes for the future.

[MKO]: How did you first get involved with MK Legacy?
[Shane Warren Jones]: Well, I first heard about it when a couple friends of mine had worked on the MK: Rebirth pitch. I literally got an audition a week before shooting started and flew out the following weekend for a fitting and two days later we began shooting.

It seems to be a role that demands a lot of physicality. What kind of background do you have?
The physical background I have is in dance and martial arts. I've studied kung-hu for a few years and dance all through high school/college. I started training at a gym called White Lotus Martial Arts in Los Angeles about three years ago, and have been studying a sport called Tricking ever since. It's a good work out.

As an actor/martial artist, which skills have been most stretched by MK Legacy?
Definitely the martial arts aspect.

You play a cold-blooded cyborg programmed to kill in one of the most violent fighting franchises in games. What's something warm and reassuring people might like to know about you?
[Laughs] True, true, that is an accurate assessment of my character. Well, I'm a huge nerd and hopeless romantic at heart... So... yeah... The complete opposite of a cold blooded cyborg anything! If you get me in a room and talk comics I'll probably nerd out with you. I grew up with the stuff. But shhhhh, don't tell anyone. Ninjas can't love, or nerd out.

What was your impression of Mortal Kombat before joining Legacy?
Like I said; I knew some of the guys on the Rebirth pitch and I was very impressed with the quality and realism put into the project for an under the table pitch [laughs]. Then I got to read the script and my role on the plane and I couldn't help but get excited.

How familiar were you with Cyrax before getting the part?
I was familiar only through his introduction in MK3, but I did my research and was really excited to see that the character had such a cool arc to it.

Have you played the new game at all?
I didn't get to play the new game until after I had already shot, but I've played it at the launch party, loved it and will say that I did beat our director, Kevin Tancharoen, in one round at the party... Which, in my opinion, isn't bad for never having practiced before. That dude plays a mean Smoke! [laughs]

Hydro -- Illfated Lin Kuei Fighter Created by Malibu Comics! There have been a lot of reports that you're playing two characters -- Cyrax and Hydro. Is that accurate?
Yes, that is correct. All I can say is that Hydro is also part of the Lin Kuei. [smiles]

What were some of the demands of playing two characters? How did you separate them?
Well, I was lucky in that there wasn't a lot of info on Hydro, so it was pretty hard to mess him up. It all came down to what Kevin wanted out of me performance-wise. Some of the difficulties would be, what are essentially the different, distinct mannerisms of the individual characters themselves. I tried doing some research on [Hydro] and not very much came up other than, 'He only appears in a few issues of the comic.'

The games have seen a lot of plotlines over time. Is Cyrax a character you'd like to do more with?
Oh, absolutely! Like I said before, Cyrax has really grown over the course of the past six games. While I haven't played the ones in between MK3 and MK9 at length, I am aware of the turn the character takes and his journey in juxtaposition to Sektor's journey, and without revealing too much before the episode, I believe we've only touched the surface of it, and I would LOVE to really flesh that character out for the fans.

We've seen pictures and trailer clips of the suit. What was it like to wear? Does the work diminish the 'cool factor' of the look?
[laughs] The suit was snug, to say the least, and there was no cool factor being diminished. What's the point of being a ninja if you can't even enjoy wearing the cool gear... Am I right? [He's right, folks.]

Cyrax and Sektor -- Looking Quite Cool!

The last episode has been held off for a month and a half. Has the added wait been as tough for you as it has been for fans?
[laughs]Hharder even... trust me. It's been quite a ride.

What do you think the future holds for MK Legacy and its characters?
I hope, much like everyone else, that we get a series and/or movie going with the grittiness that Kevin wants and can deliver. MK is a really visceral franchise and needs someone who can really put that on the big screen.

What are you hoping people take away from the SDCC unveiling of the episode?
What I hope people take away is that first and foremost that we are badasses [laughs]. I'm kidding.

What I hope fans take away, those who enjoy the series and those who had other expectations -- (I've read some of the venom spewed on YouTube [laughs]) -- is that there is an incredible amount of work that goes into the entertainment that they enjoy. Not just from the actors, but from the crew -- directoir, stunt coordinators, stunt men, producers, studios, etc etc. This is all done to please them because we love what we do. I hope they enjoy it and it makes them dream a little bigger.

Second DLC Character Kenshi Officially Released!

Originally announced in April, a few days before the release of the latest Mortal Kombat, the second downloadable character addition to the roster is now available for purchase! With an array of unique attacks and fatalities, the blind swordsman Kenshi slashes and wills his way into the consoles of PS3 and Xbox 360 users.

Much like the first DLC character Skarlet received, a short MKast was released by Netherrealm Studios in promotion of Kenshi. MK team members Erin Piepergerdes, Tony Zeffiro and Paulo Garcia speak about the latest addition to the roster, noting that their first intention was to make him a completely unique character, presumably apart from fellow telekinetic warrior Ermac. His heavy use of his Japanese themed sword helps in setting this tone, along with his astral projection special abilities that are more reminiscent of Noob Saibot's shadow clones than anything Ermac has in his arsenal.

Several pieces of concept art have also been officially released, as shown in the MKast. Two featuring Kenshi enacting his revenge on the devious sorcerer Shang Tsung, while the others focusing on the genesis and progression of Kenshi's design for this game, including the detail on his signature sword.

Kenshi is available on the Playstation Network for the price of $4.99 and Xbox Live for 400 MS Points. At this juncture, NRS has stated that Kenshi should be available for XBL users some time early July 6th.

Kenshi's release also coincides with another classic skin set, this time featuring two more ninja who did not receive the classic preorder treatment; Noob Saibot and Smoke. Even without the purchase of Kenshi, these alternate costumes are available to all players free of charge through download of the compatibility patch.

If the DLC release pattern holds true, the much sought ninja Rain should be making his much heralded appearance soon as the third DLC character! Stay tuned to @MK_Online on Twitter for all your breaking news on the Mortal Kombat series!

Noob Saibot and Smoke Klassic Kostumes and Easter Egg!

NetherRealm Studios has recently released more content to the already robust Mortal Kombat. Among the slew of content are klassic kostumes whereby many characters don outfits reminiscent of the early days of the series. This time it is the shadowy wraith Noob Saibot and Lin Kuei ninja Smoke who received retro treatment.

What is especially interesting is that NetherRealm Studios, never foregoing a chance to mess with the heads of their loyal fans, have included two notable Easter Eggs. The premise is a simple one: Draw devoted fans back to memories of 2004's Mortal Kombat: Deception in which, in an early demonstration of the now staple tag team mechanic, Noob Saibot and Smoke fought as a team. Although the duo lacked a weapon (a staple among the rest of the cast), upon switching stances the characters themselves would swap between each other. This tag dynamic, proving popular enough among fans, eventually brought us to 2011's Mortal Kombat featuring a robust tag team option.

As a throwback, not only do Noob and Smoke team up to display their retro duds in the reveal trailer, upon selecting Retro Noob another change occurs. Normally while performing Noob's X-Ray attack, a shadowy doppelganger holds Noob's victim prone while Noob himself deals devastating damage. However, upon selecting Retro Noob, it is none other than Retro Smoke who holds Noob's victim during his X-Ray attack. All other shadow attacks are of Noob's standard shadow duplicate, albeit in retro garb.

This would not be the first time NetherRealm Studios appealed to fans' nostalgia. The recently released DLC characters Skarlet and Kenshi likewise have a storied history in Mortal Kombat lore.
