After watching MUGEN videos, seeing fakes of MK Vs. (Insert video game series here), and the like, I got to thinking... would Super Moves breathe some much-needed fresh air into the franchise, or would they seem more like a cop-out? They could still keep Fatalities, but I'd think some sort of Super Move system could possibly work, as well as better differenate between characters.

Be more specific on super moves, do you mean something as in Street fighter where you pull off an ultimate combo, or something along the lines of a more powerful way to perform a special move ex. Sub-Zero freezing you for a longer duration of time.

Yea, more specifics please. My first thought of what you mean is like DbZ or something.

If that's the case...it would hurt, so bad.

I think "incorporating" the special moves that our characters are "capable" of -- IN-to combos more frequently is the way to go. For this aspect anyway. ( i.e. our elemental characters are capable of far more than a simple "freeze" or "chi-blast")

Our fights should resemble movie fights//choregraphy. Who wouldn't want to play a character as versed as Jet Li or Jackie Chan? Visually, that would be amazing. Gameplay wise, it would force the fighting engine to improve greatly. Cuz ya can't get that look with out the proper mechanics.

Basiclly what I'm saying here is, more frequent special moves that are relative to whatever character, would suffice for these "super moves" you speak of. Visual appeal and mecanics would be heightened at the same time....
I'd like to see some super moves, but not totally like in street fighter.

Examples

Raiden could do some hand animations before throwing a powerful lightning blast (Like in the MKD intro). The move would take longer to come out, but maybe cause more damage or become unblockable.

Scorpion could do some kind of grapple with his rope, then stab the opponent a couple times = Cut tendons maybe, then breath an explosion of fire in their face, the blast knocking them back and to the floor.

Basically, more elaborate moves instead of a fireball that hits 10 times, or a triple uppercut with shadow effects.

Something more realistic or movie like.

Not every fighter needs to have these types of moves. Some could make up for it with higher combo abilities, reversals, extra special moves, guard breakers and what not.

Give certain types of moves to different characters that go with them. Don't just add stuff for the sake of having every character with the same basic technique.

Hmm... that's an interesting way to go too. I like. That brings to mind a fatality idea I had a while back about using more of the stuff in the Mk movies in the game.

Sub Zeros' fatality that he didn't get to finish in Mk1 the movie...."What would've happened?" Y'know?.

Good stuff.
These moves don't need a power meter either.

It could just be logical risk VS reward design, or a difficult command.

Raiden's charge could be a long wind up that can be cancelled. Like the super moves in Tekken and Soul Calibur.

It might also come out faster if you do it as a just frame move during a combo. = Less damage than normal, but is now comboable.

Scorpion's special could be a reversal with a small catch window and long recovery. If you land it, it causes high damage. If you do it as the last hit of a match, you can chain the move in to a fatality.

This is more of what I was thinking. Super Moves equal a more powerful special move. As opposed to Super COMBOs.

I'm thinking maybe like this move I saw in a MUGEN video, where Sub-Zero knocks them into the air with a kick, charges up an uber-freeze ray, and lets it loose. They become encased in a block of ice ala Kula's specials in KoF, and it shatters upon the ground, damaging them.

One I came up with years ago for a MK/SF fan game that never got off the ground, was Smoke blasted them with a huge cloud of, well, smoke.

More inventive ones would be better, as opposed to "Liu Kang shoots a bigger fireball" and "Jax does an automatic 10-hit Gotcha Grab".

Well, the thing is, most people would just use the same super-move over and over again. I dont really mind, but with online play..........

I can see what you're getting at... hopefully by the next game, the MK team has learned how to balance the game better, supers or not

You would not win if that's all you do.

Unless the other player doesn't know how to do basics.

If the special move has a slow start up, it can be interrupted or side stepped.

If it's like a reversal with a very small catch window, you'd have to be perfect and a psychic in order to spam something like that.

If the move has a long recovery and it misses, it can be countered by a high damage combo.

If it's a grab, it can have an easy escape command or longer than normal escape window. It might even be reversable.

There are many ways to design stuff like this in order for it to be fair or not abuse-able. Make them strong but give them an about equal weakness.
