Them being classic is the reason we want them to die. 15 years is way too long to stay in a single video game series.
If you haven't released it, all of them are lame and have the same storyline every game.
Liu Kang - Always the hero who defeats the boss.
Johnny Cage - Comic (yeah, right) relief who makes movies
Sonya - Always after Kano
Kano - The guy who always switches sides and does jack shit.
Goro - Same as Kano.
Shang - Don't really see a need for him now that the DA is over.
Reptile - Has potential if Khameleon makes a comeback. If she doesn't, it's the end of him.
Scorpion - Many are disappointed in his new story, but he will never leave.
Sub-Zero - The only character with remotely anything going for him.
People now really see no hope for them in the future, so people want to them gone before they ruin the franchise more than it already is.

They're for the most part boring, stale, and too obvious to bring back. Start with a breath of fresh air and start the new story with new heroes and villains. Have some of the classics return as cameos if you absolutely need to but I couldn't think of a better way to rejuvinate the series. The classics have done their job and it's time to move on.
The classics don't need to die, they just don't need to come back.

Well give or take it, not many of the classics are coming back as it is. If you brought this topic up before Deadly Alliance came out then this would have been devastating news to me. But I just don't like how my favorite classic characters are being portrayed anymore so it would be good to see them leave.
I would be very disapointed with Mortal Kombat if they completely took out all the characters from previous Mortal Kombat games and just replaced the game with a roster of characters that had similar moves to the classic characters before them. I've seen that move done before and It just turned those games away from me. As a fan can you imagine a new character using Liu Kang's bicycle kick? Or another character using Shang Tsung's soul steal? I think not. So for the next generation NO CLONE CHARACTERS of our old favorites!

I respect the classics way too much to kill off all of the original MK veterans.I have reasons why most the originals should stay.
Scorpion- He is an old-scool favorite, and if you give him a revamp, things will work out fine.
Shang Tsung- He was the perfect, most original, old-school villain in MK. He was THE symbol of a bad guy. More bad guys should be like him.
Baraka-THE original icon of brutality.Enough said.
Sub-Zero- Another old-school favorite. He is always changing and evolving and that's why we like him so much.
Reptile- The original bad-ass killing machine.
Raiden- Everybody's favorite god. Most aren't even close to touching him.
Ermac- An old-scool MK2 glitch becoming a force not to be screwed with. Only MK could pull off that kind of success story.
Kung Lao- My favorite shaolin monk character. And he has the coolest hat ever.
Kitana- People know not to mess with the princess. Enough said.
Mileena- The original bad-ass chick.
Kabal- So much more to learn about this mysterious man...
Smoke- A cool ninja that just needs a deeper story.
