How difficult would it be for the MK team to include such a feature in future games? If they ever add such a thing, how do you see it working?

Not sure what the point of it would be exactly unless there's a fair amount of environment interaction to make it necessary. The MK team usually does a fine job of creating levels of variety, so I would rather they spend time on more useful things.

If they did make it however, I could see it ebing done just like any other basic level creator. You pick a background setting(Beach, Platform, Outworld, Forest etc.), and then you can choose the size of your level from a few options, then simply add in obstacles, weapons, and potentially death traps if they decide to go that route.

If they did they should use tony hawk park editor as a reference, that was pretty cool

I agree that the MK team does a good job in creating variety for arenas. Maybe such tools could be given out as DLC.

What about creating an environment completely from scratch? Do you think developers could come up with such a toolset, that would be user friendly? It would be nice to share arenas with friends over the net.

I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject, so maybe I'm just reiterating your thoughts, blackcyborg. But anyway, I don't think I've ever seen an arena creation system for a fighting game.

It could be cool sure, but I don't think it's been done because it's not something the majority of fighting game fans care about having. They want a solid game with a great gameplay engine, character models, story etc. An arena editor just isn't practical right now, especially because arenas are more of an asthetic thing rather than interactable. If the arena played a much bigger part like it does in games that you see this feature for(Tony Hawk, Smash Bros etc.), then it would become a possibility.

blackcyborg, could you elaborate on what you said here:

"Not sure what the point of it would be exactly unless there's a fair amount of environment interaction to make it necessary."

I'm not sure I follow you.

Meaning if the arena you played in played a big part in the battle. Like in the past the only reason to pick one arena over another besides because it looks cooler than another, was because it had a stage fatality/deathtrap.

If however they throw in things you can break or send an opponent through, weapons and objects you can grab, or environmental physics such as levels where players are standing in knee high water so it slows you down or they are in space so gravity is all messed up etc...then custome arenas could be important and useful.

The reason why it matters in Tony Hawk games is because you can place all kinds of different things to interact with such as placement of ramps and rails in certain spots that make or break the experience. So a map with multiple ramps and rails that connect to one another to enhance the fun factor and things you can do is a lot more enjoyable.

However, in Mortal Kombat it doesn't matter if a beach is in the background or a forest, because it doesn't matter to the actual gameplay. That fight will go no differently regardless of what's in the background.

When it comes to Super Smash Bros. level creator...the reason why it matters in that game is because you are fighting on essentially a platform. So having multiple platforms in different spots changes up the way the whole battle and strategy used can go.

In Mortal Kombat though, the camera is focused on a smaller area consisting of only 2 fighters. There's never platforms you can jump to or any of that because it doesn't fit in with this style of play.

Does that clear it up at all?
