Should the story mode be more like Injustices?
Having finally played Injustice recently, one thing I liked about the game is that it's story mode didn't rush straight to the fights. They bothered to tell a story, and to have some character development. Not saying it was Shakespearean or anything, but it was decent.
That's one issue I had with the last two MK games' story modes, they went straight to the action most of the time. The cutscenes played like the game was impatient, and it needed action, now!!!
So I do think that if the next MK game has a story mode, they should take their time with the cutscenes. They don't have to pull a Kojima with greatly extended scenes, they just have to do more than write a little dialogue before the fights.

The main thing to understand when comparing Injustice's story mode to MK9's is that the DC characters are far better defined than the MK characters even though MK has been around for about 20 years. Don't get me wrong...MK9 did do a number of things well in its story mode with a number of characters, but when you get to characters like Raiden, Quan Chi, and Mileena, there are some real issues. I still think NRS has a problem with the sort of format used for the story mode in their games, but Injustice's story mode did flow better overall.
What I would love to see is to have the story mode done in a way that makes the player feel as if he/she is on a journey, an adventure. Properly defining and exploring the characters as a major part of the storytelling in the story mode helps with that feel. Who is this character? Where is he/she from? What is his/her upbringing, motivations, etc. etc.? These sorts of things led me to come to this idea that Mortal Kombat should be a philosophy that's open to multiple interpretations, something that goes beyond a martial arts tournament for the survival of one's realm. When you have a base like that to work from, it opens up to storytelling possibilities.
It's true that story modes like those we got don't do the greatest job delving into the MK characters' stories, but that can be taken care of in many ways, such as bios. Other means of fleshing out a character could be unlockable short videos featuring said character, in a defining moment, like when Sonya and Kano first crossed paths.
A story mode like Injustice's would still be great imo, if we got another story mode.

I haven't played Injustice but from what you said it sounds like the Story mode spends more time on cutscenes and explaining story points etc... so if that's true then HELL YES.
I would like to see the cutscenes be extended as well, but instead of just having fights with opponents I would like to also see missions kind of like in Shaolin Monks...you're still playing MK, but in a slightly different format. When I saw Namco do this with Tekken (although not very well done) I realized the same could be done with MK. So single fights, SM styled levels, mini games and tons of cutscenes. I'd be happy with that.

MK or Injustice.....story modes are boring. Don't see the point in having them.

It is the only thing that holds any merit for others.
I do not give a rat's ass about multiplayer, and can't be bothered for two-player more than an hour.
