We know Baraka's race was the result of interbreeding between Netherrealm demons and an Outworld species. Looking at Shinnok's demons' teeth and how similar they are to the Tarkatans', could these creatures be one of the two ancestor species?

Just a thought. I admit it wouldn't explain why the Tarkatans didn't get those wings. The blades might have been from that unknown Outworld species.

On a related note, who's disappointed Shinnok's demons weren't fightable NPCs in the story mode?

I wouldn't even mind if they made one of those demons an actual character, it really wouldn't be much different than having 1 notable/playable tarkatan (Baraka) and w.e the hell D'vorah is lol

Plus to me the more different characters the better, I wouldn't mind having a few "monster" like characters, or just a few characters that don't 100% fit the humanoid mold, sort of like KI (which I have never played lol)
I don't think the writers even remembered about that little tidbit about the Tarkatans. It's said in Story Mode that Shao Kahn conquered Baraka's realm.

As for a playable demon, Sareena would fit nicely.

You have to wonder if thats what she really looks like behind the facade. Imagine her losing all control of herself and turning into THAT for a fatality.

Yeah, I thought of making one of those playable too. The more freaks, the better.

Well, I remember the original story was that the Tarkata (or Baraki as I now refer to them) were mutants native to outworld, then later on they indicated (I think during Deception?) that they were cross-bred with Netherrealm demons. There were a lot of wingless demon NPCs in Deception's konquest mode that look like the Baraki, so yeah, it's possible.

I just wish they would've gone the extra length to make them look different from one another, rather than every Tarkata being a Baraka clone (hence, the Baraki).

The Tarkata are like animals. If you get attacked by a group of rhinoceroses, chances are they're all going to look the same. That has never bothered me.

As shown by the Mobile game: Those demons have long teeth-like growths on their faces and arms. These are most definitely the demons that were bred with Outworlders to create the Tarkatans.

Moloch is also called an Oni, and he is very clearly a different race, so I think Oni is a catchall term for all animal-like demons in the Netherrealm.

I also suspect "Saurians" are Outworlders or Tarkartans who interbred with Raptors. (The wiki says its the exact same race, but we know Raptors are extinct on outworld, and only revealed to be still alive on Earth during Reptile's ending, and the wikia is often full of shit.)

So in other words, Baraka is a nondescript rhinoceros. All the more reason to keep him dead.

Yup, you got it. By definition Oni is a Japanese term for a specific type of demon:

"One of the most well-known aspects of Japanese folklore is the oni, which has traits of demons and ogres, usually depicted with red, blue, brown or black skin, two horns on its head, a wide mouth filled with fangs, and wearing nothing but a tigerskin loincloth. It often carries an iron kanabo or a giant sword. Oni are depicted as evil."

However, colloquially the term Oni itself is used to generally describe evil spirits and demons of Japanese culture, so in general Oni can describe any type of demon.

Just what keeps the nonhumans from being replaceable if there's only one of each? Well, besides the Shokans

Well...here's the thing. That got retconned remember? Now the Tarkatan are just another people who had their realm merged with Outworld by Shao Kahn because...fucking John Vogel!

Remember? Baraka says this before fighting D'Vorah.
