After watching it a few times, Shinnok being the boss is fairly obvious.
I thought it before, but after hearing the last line: "Earthrealm's faith lies with you", it must be our task to stop Shinnok from escaping the amulet.

The other signs:
- Shinnok is in the amulet
- The Asian girl saying "THE emperor" and "those caught in the middle, pay a price"
- Mileena says it's her weapon to re-claim the throne of outworld.
- Raiden, Cassie & Kotal are all after the amulet.
- Mileena has the amulet

I bet it's reiko. That big explosion in the temple was him trying to recreate himself as Shao Kahn.

I think he will be a boss, maybe even the sub-boss, but I am not 100% sure about the big bad. Boon did say the final boss is one we wouldn't expect, and there are so many different plot points going on to already assume the obvious. Also, the Kamidogu weren't touched on much in this trailer, and based on the comics, we can certainly tell there is more at play here.

There is someTHING or someONE in that red fireball in the trailer but I can't make it out. It looks like something being engulfed in it though when it first explodes.....

I can definitely live with Shinnok being the Big Final Boss. But if he's Boon's "surprise returning character," then it wasn't much of a surprise.

He wouldn't be a surprise after MK9's ending, and Boon said it was a surprise.

I still think it's Liu Kang because of the red cloud erupting over the SHAOLIN temple. The red cloud that brings Sindel and Kitana revenants with it.

But we'll see. I'd rather have Shinnok personally.

DAILY REMINDER

The story does several timeskips that divide it into several arcs, similar to the way MK9's story mode played out (+/- flashbacks all over the place).

Arc 1 (right after MK9) is Shinnok's invasion and the Netherrealm War.

Arc 2 (5-10 years afterwards) is apparently the Outworld Civil War.

Arc 3 (25 years after MK9) is we don't know yet (but most likely something to do with the Kamidogu).

It makes perfect sense that each of these arcs is going to have its own boss. And Shinnok is obviously the boss of the first one.

The only question, really, is whether he resurfaces afterwards.

I think he does.

The Asian girl saying "THE emperor"

She's talking about Kotal.

The scene is set in the refugee camp for Outworlders. The reason why there are refugees is because some serious shit's going down in Outworld.

By "serious shit" I mean Mileena is either in the process of being overthrown by Kotal, or she's already been overthrown and is now trying to reclaim the throne after the events shown in the comic.

And considering that Cassie is already a full-fledged member of the SF, I'm willing to bet it's the latter.

And considering that this time the Amulet has a literal god inside of it, and this is Mileena we're talking about, I think it's a pretty safe bet that she doesn't know what the fuck she's doing and is in way over her head.

The possibility of Shinnok breaking out of the Amulet is very real.

I love the idea of Mileena being in way over her head and thinking the amulet is gonna help her overthrow Kotal, and then BAM! Shinnok is back and ready to fuck some shit up!

After reading about the red cloud forming at the Shaolin Temple and Sindel & Kitana defending it, in their evil state. Liu Kang remains a possibility, but also dare I say it...Shao Kahn? Now that would be surprise and he is also trapped.

Glad it's not clear cut, wish I could change the thread title to Boss discussion thread ;)

Trollinnok and Quan Chi made a mistake by not calling their friend Tanya to the rescue and to kreate some mess in MKX.

I hope Raiden or another kharakter punches them both!

LOL wtf is wrong with you and your Tanya obsession, go look up KD Aubert or something

I'm back on Shinnok as boss, because Raiden says "If that talisman is what I think it is, we're in big trouble." The MK1 outfit and story wise, the imprisonment of Shinnok happens in the early parts. The part where he says that clearly after. So if that talisman is indeed the amulet in which he imprisoned Shinnok, he fears the escape of said god as well.

A lot of people try to act like they know what Ed Boon said regarding a surprise returning character, but the truth is: Shinnok is a surprise to many regular MK fans, he is a returning, he can be playable / unlockable (which Boon said he wanted this time). Obviously because of the info released since then, it's not that much of a surprise, but you have to understand when Boon made that statement. Finally, the Boon teaser of a cage, implying imprisonment or being trapped to me is also another point towards Shinnok imo.

I too was thinking that Shinnok could escape the Amulet and be the big bad at the end of the story. I'd like to see this, personally.

Shinnok IS a suprise BECAUSE --> Boon said in the past that he regrets making him the boss in MK4...now he is gonna make him the boss the right way..do him justice and not sweep him under the rug as a mistake!

Also I just love Mileena...i was so happy when i saw her being so badass :))

There is nothing wrong with me whatsoever, I have been a Tanya fan for years and I will remain a fan.

I don't know what/who Aubert is. That is irrelevant to Mortal Kombat, anyway.

I was just wondering if Shinnok and Quan Chi are mad at their fellow magical, witch friend, Tanya. confused

"Not a lot of people will see it coming." - Ed Boon on the big bad.

Considering the ending of MK9, Shinnok would not be a surprise whatsoever. Given the way the story is unfolding, I would not doubt that Shinnok plays a big role in the game. But I feel like it would be rehashing MK4 if he were the big bad. Since much of the game will take place during the Outworld civil war, it would make sense for the boss to be from Outworld. I think its important to remember that the big bad doesn't have to be the most threatening figure in the MK universe but rather the right person as dictated by the plot of the story mode.

Mileena was getting OWNED by Kotal Kahn. You just don't show the "big bad" getting owned in a trailer like that. It's probably definitely Shinnok. That makes perfect since.

And he would still be a surprising return being that the last game he was playable was MKA.
Plus, I doubt that Mileena fans would be very happy if thier favorite character wasn't playable because she's a boss.

As much as it would be nice to see him as the final boss, his chances seem to have taken a hit as of late. You're right in that there would be no suspense behind it. I'm willing to bet it's going to be someone who was not in the trailer.
