What do you guys think about some characters having a 4th variation via a super secret unlock or through DLC? For example, say Reptile is in the game. He might have a secret 4th variation called "old school" that gives him Scorpion's harpoon and Sub Zero's freeze ball. And of course these moves will glitch green every once in awhile.

No. Some characters having an extra Variation would make the whole game unbalanced and it would be incredibly unfair to all the other characters.

3 for each character is just fine.

I don't see how it would be unfair if you can only use one variation at a time. It just gives you more play style options.

I like the idea. I was actually considering this option for story mode purposes--if the timespan of the game is 25 years, won't some of the characters learn skills or even change fundamentally over the course of the game? Unlockable variations are a natural place for this kind of spoiler-related development.

Unfair to the characters in an abstract sense, maybe--it might irk some people that not all the characters get equal love. But it won't make gameplay unbalanced unless the variations themselves are unbalanced. You can only choose one variation at a time, so extra variations is functionally no different from having an additional character on the roster.

I heard you have to obtain the Super Secret Unlockables in Deadly Alliance first, and then find Stryker on Cloud 9 in Deception.

In other words, meh...

Let's keep it at 3. It's balanced, and it provides a great variety for each character. No need to dilute the idea.

Hmm, unbalanced was the wrong word then...

Either way, I am still voting no. The unfair factor is still there. One thing is that some characters get extra costumes and the like, while others are left behind. The fans of those others are being cheated and overlooked, simply because the characters they like might not be the more popular ones.

But a whole extra Variation... that much larger than a costume. The unfairness would be through the roof! Because, no, it isn't just like adding a new character... it is given to an already exisiting character which means the main gameplay of that character is intact, but some extra tools are being added. So the fans of that character suddenly have more to play with while all the rest get nothing.

I wouldn't even want it should one of my favourites be one of the characters to get an extra Variation. It's simply not fair to the others.

Alot of butthurt will commence and it will tear the community further apart than it already is.

So no. It's a very bad idea.

Pointless and redundant. You're suggesting quantity over quality for the sole sake of more quantity.

People already bitch enough about costume DLC for certain characters. The amount of "meltdown" that would occur if certain characters had more variations would be ridiculous.

The Kommunity as a whole would implode.

Three is plenty. I rather have DLC have either more characters or more arenas. Adding another variation isn't something that seems like it's worth the $5-20 it's asking for.

I respect where you're coming from, but I struggle with the whole "fairness" issue in general. While I'm sure NRS takes the fan community preferences into account, their primary goal is to make a game that lots and lots and lots of people will buy--not to ensure democratic fairness among its intellectual properties.

My main for almost twenty years has never been a fan favorite with strong support. (You can guess who she is.) I was thrilled to see her in MK9 but I'm OK with the fact that she's not gonna make a lot of appearances, or that other characters might get more love from NRS than her, if it means that NRS is gonna make badass games that sell really well and please a wide market.

There are other ways to do so than to add extra Variations to a selected few characters. It is simply not needed.

Isn't having to learn 3 MUs per character already enough? And you want to add another one? I'm going to go ahead and say no thanks.

For what? 3 is enough.

If we had 4, you'd ask for 5. No.

I'm kinda torn on this. More variations can only mean more variety within a character, and that's never a bad thing. Sure, it means some characters will get partial treatment, but I'm not going to begrudge Scorpion for having 4 variations when everyone else has a minimum of 3. Even if not everyone is getting the same strategic variety, everyone is getting ADEQUATE variety

However, I think I'm ultimately going to say no on this one. 4th variations for specified characters means more resources spent on animations, specials, and LOTS of balancing. So if they're going to put in that additional effort... why not just make a new character? That seems like a better time investment that's going to please more people in the end.

It wouldn't work DLC wise.
If it's OP, then it's P2W.
If it low tier compared to ANY of the already available Variations, then it's wasted money.

This^ and wouldn't we all like to have Alts for the DLC characters, this time around? I bet we do!

That was something seriously unfair to the DLC characters in MK9.

I'd prefer it didn't, because I could see this becoming a potential money making scam if it came in the form of DLC.

I could see this idea showing up as a 'classic' variation pack or something to that effect. I'm not totally against it as it provides more options, it would be an optional purchase, and I don't see any sort of damage it would cause. Though I agree that 3 is kind of enough and those resources could be used somewhere else, because there are NEVER enough fatalities.
I don't believe that what we've seen so far will be the finished result of the variations mechanic.
