Well , I don't see why the first poster included Daegon but not Taven, these two are made to be together, well, I would put Scorpion and Sub Zero that's for sure,

Story:
Following the massacre that occurred during MK:A, Shang Tsung assumes Blaze's god-like powers and becomes obsessed with ruling Outworld with Edenia first on his list. Meanwhile, Sindel raises King Jerrod from the dead to put an end to Tsung's madness, but it turns out that it is actually Tsung posing as the former King. He casts a spell on Sindel and they marry soon after with Tsung still posing as Jerrod. Kitana is banished from Edenia and Mileena takes her place as heiress to the throne. But it turns out that Sindel's spell worked after all and Jerrod becomes Outworld's only hope. But nobody recognizes him because Tsung altered his appearance. He, along with Kitana and her allies, serve as a symbol of peace.

Notes:
-The only survivors of Armageddon are those listed above.
-Shang Tsung promised Reptile and Khameleon a rebirth of their race in return for their allegiance.
-Shao Kahn is turned into a Centaur by Tsung and swears his allegiance.
-Mileena is turned beautiful by Tsung sans a scar on her right eye as a reminder that he can take it away if she betrays him or if he dies.
-Scorpion is promised to be turned human for his allegiance.
-During the Armageddon, Sub-Zero lost his left arm, but he learned how to create organic ice and now has an arm made of ice in its place.

Endings:
-Jerrod
After Tsung's defeat, the spell over Sindel is lifted and they both rule a now peaceful Edenia.

-Kitana
Tsung's spell over Sindel had a catch: if he dies, she does as well. With Sindel's death, the spell over Jerrod is also moot and he dies again. With the death of her parents, Kitana becomes the queen of Edenia.

-Liu Kang
Following the final battle, Liu Kang and Kitana marry and he becomes Prince of Edenia.

-Jade
During the fight for Edenia, Jade and Taven fall in love and they become generals of the Edenian armies.

-Taven
Tired of the constant battle for peace, Taven leaves and is never heard from again.

-Sonya
Sonya returns to Earth only to find it in ruins.

-Sub-Zero
Sub-Zero and Scorpion finally make peace and they form a new clan wjtb tbe purpose of protecting all realms.

-Shang Tsung
Following the conquest of Edenia, Tsung sets his eyes on Earthrealm.

-Shao Kahn
Shao Kahn betrays Tsung in hopes of returning to his former form, but it does not work so he commits suicide.

-Sindel
With the help of the real Jerrod, Tsung's spell is broken and she and Jerrod reunite after all these years and soon become pregant.

-Mileena
After Tsung defeats the last of the resistance against his rule, Mileena betrays Kahn and kills Sindel and she becomes the Queen of Edenia.

-Reptile
Tsung keeps his promise and turns all the lower-class Edenians into Saurians.

-Khameleon
Khameleon becomes pregnant with Reptile's child, but Tsung steals the egg growing inside her and replaces it with something pure evil.

-Scorpion
Scorpion is transformed into his former self and loses all of his memories of the Mortal Kombat tournaments.

-Raiden
Enraged at Sindel for allowing this to happen, Raiden kills her and soon kills Jerrod as well. Then he destroys Edenia itself, but not before Kitana and Jade escape to Earthrealm. When Kitana learns it was Raiden that destroyed her home, she invokes Mortal Kombat on the Heavens, which cannot be refused. (the first TRUE tournament since the first MK game)

I thought sindel and khameleon were good.

- Continues his hostile attack on the Lin Kuei temple.

Smoke:
- Helps in the assault against the Lin Kuei.

Sub-Zero:
- Facing personal demons, he has to make a choice of killing his former brother or putting more innocents in jeopardy.

Kenshi:
- With the orders of Fujin, he will be on guard against all adversaries.

Hotaru:
- Continues his goal of absolute order.

Motaro:
- After regaining his people’s hind legs by Quan Chi’s amulet, he is most grateful to wicked sorcerer.

Why would the new game, which is meant to start near enough from scratch, consist of 20 old characters? That leaves no room for new ones, isn't this pointless? Basically you’re just asking if Armageddon only had 20 characters, who would they be?

yea 20 is two much for mk8 maybe 10 or at most 15.
