Hello Guys,

So with the recent Sonya "confirmation" I was thinking that maybe NRS will include one off characters in the story, or in challenge towers, or some other game modes. Sonya might not be the best example, as she is going to be fully playable probably, so let me explain what I'm thinking about through the example of Jade.

So what if, in story mode, we will actually play through Jade's demise, with Jade having her own unique model, but playing entirely as Kitana's Mournful variation. She would not have other variations, nor would be selectable on the roster, just a one off addition to the story.

They could make a one off Jarek for example if you went after cassie as him in the story, based on one of Kano's variations, or have Takeda be a one off version of Kenshi, Frost a one off version of Sub Zero (Cryomancer?), the list could go on.

I could even see Sonya being a one-off in the story, based on one of Cassie's variations.

They might even have some custom X-rays, or even some altered projectiles, but I think you get the picture.

How would you guys feel if this was the case? Do you even think this is even likely to happen? Discuss!

I am definitely on board with this, but I know a lot of people on here can't stand to think that some characters might only get 1 variation.

I subscribe to the line of reasoning that 1 is better than none.

Plus we could see a lot of characters be "technically" playable in mkx if this is adopted.

It's a cool idea, but I don't think it will be implemented as you've said in story mode.

It sounds great for immersion purposes. Unfortunately, I don't think it would sit well with some fans who will complain that if, for example, if they can make "jade skin" playable during the story why not make her playable entirely and things like that.

I could dig it in the challenge tower.

I would have no problems with any characters having only one or two variations. It's not like characters can switch variations during fighting, anyway.

My issue with Kitana's mourning variant is NRS using it as an excuse to leave Jade out, but I'd be okay with the OP's idea. There's no reason, however, that Jade couldn't be playable as an alternate skin for Kitana, with her own intros and maybe even her own outro.

But yes, it'd be nice if secondary/minor characters weren't confined to cutscenes nor were AI-controlled opponents with barely a moveset (some MK:DA characters in MKD's Konquest mode coming to mind) just because NRS didn't want to fully work on them.

I like your idea I never really thought of it from this angle but that would be an awesome idea I doubt they will implement though but it's definitely a good idea and a great way to get characters included without including them if you know what I mean!

More or less this.

I'd love it if they appeared in this manner for story purposes, and to see more faces... but it would annoy the hell out of me that they weren't also playable.

It's actually very similar to the Deadly Alliance characters who showed up in Deception's konquest mode.

Many of the characters from Deadly Alliance which didn't make it into Deception, were fightable encounters in MKD's Konquest mode... which while awesome for fleshing out Konquest... was slightly annoying, because we knew their models were in the disc, and they could theoretically have been fleshed out a bit more into playables themselves. Even if they did have re-used models.

That idea in and of itself would largely form the basis for Armageddon's development.

Anywho... I could see something like this happening. Possibly even re-using some MK9 models to achieve the result. But wouldn't necessarily count on it.

And my feelings on it are admittedly mixed, for all the above reasons, so I'll take it or leave it if it does or doesn't happen.

But then wouldn't she just be her own character anyway? Just seems like, to go through all that effort, you'd just make her part of the roster anyway. It's not like the old days where you're pushed for space

Jade as an alt would only play like herself in the mourning variant. Making her an alt spares NRS from having to fully develop her, which might be one reason they gave Kitana her moveset for one of her variants.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if even giving her individual intros and an outro would prove too much work for them.

No I dont want Kitana's Alt to be Jade I'd rather keep any sort of Jade reference to Kitana's mournful variation.

When did I say Jade should be Kitana's ONLY alt? Obviously Kitana should also get some actual alts of her own.

Would you guys rather have no Jade references at all? It was highly likely she wasn't coming back for this game.

i like the idea. if they are doing cutscenes with the in game engine then all cameos will have models. i'd be ok with them using one of the variations in the tower or whatever. console folks dont really get that kind of mod customization. hopefully since the online is all interconnected that kinda stuff can be shared this time.

I certainly didn't need Kitana to gain a Jade variant as if that makes up for Jade's absence. Just like I didn't need Motaro to come back as a bipedal character in MKA.

Both Jade and Kitana were dead, so the only reason to bring back Kitana and not Jade is popularity, plus the fact she's seen only as Kitana's sidekick, and it's hard for Jade to be more than that when she's not given a chance to evolve as a character.

If anyone should have had a variant honoring a dead character, it's Liu Kang with a Kung Lao one, since KL's dead and Liu Kang may very well still be alive. But we'll probably get both.

Oh yeah, funny some people bash Jade for just being a sidekick, when Kung Lao's also pretty much one, as is Jax who'll likely return as well.

For the record I've always disliked Kung Lao. Never understood his appeal. We already had a guy with a funny hat.

I see Sonya and Jax more as partners. I feel like their importance balances out because while she was first in MK1, she sat out and he was alone in MK2. While she gets more fan cred, he's her superior officer, so he's not taking orders from her. I feel they work in tandem together. Whereas Liu Kang clearly outclasses Kung Lao, winning the first four games in a row, to Kung Lao's zero.

Hmm Jade is a woman so don't keep calling her a man. I am saddened that she isn't in the game but at least she is remembered in one of Kitana's variations.

I agree with DG10A here.

It would be a cool shout out to jade fans who otherwise would not get to play as jade. A secret unlockable alt for kitana would be really cool.

I Love the OP's idea. Let's do this NRS. And I'd Love to have a Jade skin for Kitana, that's just for kicks. It would be super KooL if u could spin the roster-square (mk4 style) after u select Kitana, but having the Mournful variation highlighted.

I'm 100% on board with characters having only 1 or 2 variations. Like DG10A said, it's not like u could switch variations mid-match anyway. I mentioned it in a few threads already. Call them "bargain characters" and sell them as a DLC 2-Pack. It would be Lesser known fighters, and even those popular ones who are just down-right hard to come up with 3 distinct variations (Baraka, Smoke to name 2 off the top my head). For example, if a regular DLC character (1guy, 3 variations) is $4.99, then sell this "bargain pack" (2guys, 2 variations) at $3.99.
