On merging characters.
It's obvious that Kano's current design is a nod to Hsu-Hao. He already took Hsu-Hao's backstory of being an infiltrator of the Special Forces. MKX Kano went to the next level, where he took Hsu-Hao's cybernetic heart.
Going further from that, how about more characters who take aspects of other characters, if only to trim down the cast? For example, Boon and Co. could give Ashrah's sword to Sareena, seeing as how both of the have the same backstory of being demons who rejected Shinnok and Co.

I could see it work for certains characters, like Jade/Kitana. As a matter of fact, all of Quan Chi's undead warriors could make for interesting combinations. One could actually rationalize the birth of Cyber-Smoke that way!
As a rule I am against it. Majority of characters could be improved without merging them others. Only select few of them must be mostly redone to become something interesting.
As for Kano - Hsu Hao issue, I would consider it an unique case, since MK-Team have well known strong dislike of Hsu Hao, so it makes sense to salvage few good concepts from that character, since it is very unlikely that he appear ever again in the series.
As for Ashrah and Sareena I see how and why they could be merged in one character, but I'd prefer if MK-Team kept them separate. Sareena has unique gameplay and story as well as Ashrah.

I don't see how Kano is a nod off to Hsu Hao all because of the cybernetics he has. Why would they have anything to do with a character that they absolutely don't like?
I prefer not seeing characters have something merged with them for the sake of us remembering those who didn't make it in.

they shared a surgeon in the original timeline. Hsu Hao's heart was his gimmick. Kano now has the heart. that is how.

disliking a character doesn't mean they dislike all elements of the character.

I don't like it all that much...
BUT! And it is a big but! If NRS have already beforehand decided that they won't have a character return ever again, like they did with Hsu Hao, then reworking the interessant things from that character into another character is alright, like they did with Kano.
However, if they already have an established character and then suddenly decides to trash that character and just merge it with another character... that's not okay.

Sareena/Ashrah not so much. Sure you could merge them into one character but two ex-Brotherhood of Shadow women with similar goals taking different paths and possibly ending on opposite sides of conflict appeals to me.
The one that LOOKS evil is actually on the side of good and the one in white slays demons/vampires no matter what.
Although when I think of D'Vorah and Skarlet suddenly Nitara and Kira become just a little bit less relevant.

Basically
Noob Saibot was technically merged with "Classic" SubZero. If Boon planned that plot-twist ALLLL the way from Mk1 then mad props to him, but very unlikely.
Meat/Drahmin should happen. I really can't think of anyone else.

Character mergers should happen only if one of the characters in question is largely or totally unsalvageable, in my humble opinion.

A two-legged Motaro in a skintight bodysuit and big balls all over...
Yeah, no...

Be honest. "Skintight bodysuit and big balls all over" is going to be the title to your memoirs isn't it?

It would be kinda cool if Hsu Hao was in the story mode briefly with a sword or something through his heart and was brought to Kano's Surgeon, Only in this timeline Kano is there and see's the Surgeons plans and gets on the operating table instead, killing Hsu Hao.
I really hope we see a lot of nods like this in MKX. Who knows? Maybe the whole theme of the game is oriented at killing off the old cast like a tribute of sorts. Boon did say it himself that this game was an ushering in of a new generation hence the X

I'm against this idea.
Taking away a character's iconic stuff and giving them to another one is IMO one of the worst things they can do to the character. It was a huge bummer when they took away Subby's most iconic fatality (spine rip) and gave it to Scorpion back in MKD. Good thing they fixed that in MK9
