There should be around 15-23 characters, and there should be at least 10-15 new characters.

The above statement, if followed, would be an MK from heaven

Why does everyone seem to equate quantity with quality?
I would rather have fewer great characters than a ton of crappy ones. Concentrate on getting the most out of each character. Each with a noticeably different fighting/weapon style, each with his/her own unique special abilites, and most of all NO MORE CLONES! I understand in the day of limited memory and graphic capabilities the need for clones but that is no longer that much of a problem. (Actually, I rather the didn't have so many clones but that was the general demand for UMK3). I would be happy with only 10 characters either old and/or new each done right from the start. Right moves, right look, right story. Then add on to that with MK9.
If cleaning the slate clean, then perhaps create some characters based off of the originals. An AU (alternate universe) like take on Mortal Kombat. Create a new Sub-Zero, a new Scorpion, a new Sonya Blade, etc. Start from scratch but keep enough familiarity to link it with Mortal Kombat's past.

Personally I'd like to see about the same size roster as we saw in Deadly Alliance. Just a reasonably sized roster. I'd rather have quality over quantity.

I think we should go back to about 12-15 slots total. Quality>Quantity.

True, but I can hope, can't I?
More realistically, I would say...
10 returning characters (7 males, 3 females)
12 new characters (8 males, 4 females)
2 secret characters (???)
1 KAK

15 is enough for me. Each fighter has to be very different from each other though.

I agree - with solid gameplay we only need a few characters.
I pray Ed Boon work on the gameplay first before even thinking about how many characters he wants to put in.
I'd be satisfied if they had the 7 originals from MK1 with good solid gameplay

If I was chosen to make a decision, I would say 18 total characters. After all the mk team has experienced with mk:a, Im sure quality with characters is insured of 18.

I agree with The_Truth here. The maximum being 25 altogether.
Like Matt:
10 old characters- There really aren't too many more that should come back imO. Any of them who have large enough fan bases should be satisfied within 10.
10 new Characters- Focal point mainly on these characters. They should be so interesting, you really don't realize you picked them "over" any of the returning characters.
2-3 Secret characters- Stupid hard to find in the game, ridiculous puzzles to get to them...and then fight them. The reward should properly compensate the trouble though. Get the character AND unlock some relative stuff with him/her.
1 KAK slot- People(including myself) like to be able to personalize a character in a game. Simply put? All I wanna see them do is, give us even more control. Take it to the next level...can I make it look like me with some of my clothes on? The way I like to dress? How much would you care about getting your ass kicked literally? IT'S YOU!! lol
Can I actually manipulate my special moves//fatalities? Can I personalize the way I stand/walk even more than MkA? Victory pose or no victory pose? hmmm...
Can I build my KaK up to have mutiple talents? Maybe I wanna be an elemental all around....*shrugs* how much work would I have to do to accomplish this? idk(re-play value) Earth, then Wind, then Water, then Fire...or whatever. What are the sorcerer levels/ranks? Can I be a necro-mancer? -- A vapire(true to folk-lore) and get stronger like they do in the books? -- Can I be a shaman? What about learning the "art" of how to steal somebodies soul//shapeshifing//flying//ect ect? Lol
---
Then if there's one slot left,
Unplayable Character- Like a sub-boss or something. You just can't play with that one guy/gal.
I think they made a mistake with letting us be able to play with some of the bosses. Like Shao Kahn, Onaga, The Shokan, The Centaurs?!? What the hell? All that could have been anticipated is that those characters would get screwed in the process. Too big, too slow, have to be immune to this or that, have to hit too hard, ect ect.. I just don't think it's a good idea.
meh....my opinion..

That was one for the final battle against Blaze, i do not think that will happen again.
Anyways, like Matt said 10 returning characters. Rain, Cage, Reptile Jarek etc. Those kind, the old ones. I think there should be like 5 new characters, like a Masked guard or somthing. Yeah that should be it.

Considering the fact that they intend to "wipe the slate clean" so to speak, I'd like to see as few returning characters as possible, and only the IMPORTANT ones (and when I say IMPORTANT, I mean to the PLOT). Raiden should return, possibly as the boss. Fujin should return, being that he is the protector of Earthrealm now. Shao Kahn and Kitana should return seeing as their realms are still at war. Seeing as Ed Boon said that no more Mortal Kombat would be without Scorpion or Sub-Zero, they should be in the next game too, but rather than being the original Scorpion and the second Sub-Zero, it should be Scorpion's son who's come back as a specter as well, and another cryomancing member of the Lin Kuei. Aside from those 6 characters (and maybe Quan Chi, if Scorpion's son needs someone to go after, making a total of 7), the rest should be all new characters that fit INTO THE PLOT (no one like Dairou, Darrius, Hotaru, Havik, Kira, Kobra, and Kabal as they were in Deception, where they were essentially absent from the main plot). I'd like to see the new characters well developed, distinguishable and unique (with interesting movies like Jarek's rope tosses, not boring fireballs).
personally id prefer many good characters than just a few good ones... they just need to spend time improving them... as for KAK its the only reason i bought and still play [sorta] this game, and it would have died a long time ago if it wasnt there........ having a lot of characters is one of the many ways that this game stands out above other fighting games in my opinion, and i dont see a need to remove things when you dont need to...

24 Characters, which is one more than what they had in MKDA (counting Blaze and MoKap)
You can have 10 old characters return, which should be reserved for the more Iconic characters. 12 brand new characters, and 2 creation spots (with multiple characters).
