My Returning Kast of Kharacters for MK9

I haven't posted a thread on MKO forums in ages, but lately I've been checking out MK stuff once again and I felt like giving my two cents. I thought I'd post my thoughts on the characters I want to see return in MK9. I know I chose many characters, but I think every one of them deserves to come back, but I think E-VE-RY one of them should be revamped. Here it goes:

• SHAO KAHN
- Kahn is MK's most iconic villain along with Shang Tsung and Goro. I also think he's one of those villains who got style. His outfit is almost as cool as his taunts, anyway you just gotta love the big guy. In my opinion, he has lots of potential for any kind of turn of events.
- I think he should get a more impressive, deity look, I don't know like if he was always hovering slightly above the ground instead of walking, or having green energy revolving around him all the time... something that makes him look even more grand.

• RAIDEN
- Raiden is perhaps the most popular character in MK. He is the god of thunder, he is powerful, wise and angry. What more could you want?
- Raiden has become dark lately, and I like that, I don't think he should go lawful again, I definatly prefer him as a chaotic good god. I also think his outfit should resemble his previous outfits, but with MAJOR changes. We've seen all his thunder moves, I think he should get new electric moves. Keep the flying god, teleport and other classic moves though.

• SCORPION
- Scorpion has such a huge fanbase it would be silly not to have him in.
- Scorpion needs to retain his yellow ninja style, but he really needs to look more like a skull-headed, undead specter. He's gotta be scary. And his spear should look even sharper, more detailed and have a chain instead of a rope. His skull head definatly need to be on fire... make a masked Scorpion his alternate outfit.

• SUB ZERO
- Same as Scorpion, he has such a huge fanbase it would be silly not to have him in.
- Sub Zero needs to be slightly taller, look slightly older, and be more bulky. He must look like an impressive, colossal lin kuei grandmaster. I really liked when his forearms were made of ice.

• REPTILE
- He has changed so much throughout the years, and he has relationships with a lot of important characters. Plus he is Mortal Kombat's first hidden character. His huge fanbase shouldn't be disappointed. Also he always had great fatalities.
- I would like his to get his force ball, acid spit, invisibility and elbow rush moves back, and I also think he should look reptilian, but I really liked when he had a ninja mask. That made him look cooler.

• ERMAC
- Ermac always had cool moves, and in Deception, he gained a killer outfit. He is overpowered, original, sexy and has lots to offer to the series. I definatly want him in.
- I liked his bandaged head with third eye style. I think they should elaborate on his telekinesis moves though, be more creative. They could change him as much as they want as long as they keep the green glowing eyes, the black and red colour theme and his unique voice. I also think he deserves a more personalized weapon than just an axe.

• KITANA
- Kitana fights with fans. That's the sexiest signature move you'll ever find. Enough said.
- I want her to get a MAJOR revamp. She needs to be a bad girl again, or to get angry or something. She has been an evil assassin for 10,000 years but she's been a good girl for five out of six games now, and when she was evil again she was just possessed. I'm not saying I want her to be evil, but she needs to be more chaotic good than lawful good. She needs to keep her fan moves, but forget the rest (square wave punch, pretty kick...) give her totally new moves. She also needs to have both a masked and unmasked outfit.

• MILEENA
- Mileena redefines sexy, original and brutal. She is a total bitch who can kill and eat you and she fights with the sexiest weapons ever. She has been my fav MK character since MK2 and in Deception she brought a totally new flavor to the franchise.
- I want her to have an unmasked outfit. I also want her four signatures to be brought back (sai throw, rolling thunder, kick from above and frankensteiner) but I badly want her to have a totally new special move, maybe a bite move or something original with her sais. Man-eater fatality has to come back in an original way, just like what they did in Deception. Oh and skanky clothes are a must. She also needs to be edenian queen FOR REAL THIS TIME, at least for a while.

• SHANG TSUNG
- He has a deep story and he can shapeshift. He can hurl flaming skulls at you, he can get inside you and blow you off to bits and he had dramatic changes in appearances over the years. Lots of potential wether you like it or not.
- I want him to get his all his signature moves back (flaming skulls, soul drain...) sure, but he HAS to have the shapeshift ability again. Also, in MK3 he could summon fireballs from the floor and them hitting you led you into his uppercut range... get this move back! It was awesome. He also needs a young MK2'ish outfit and an old MK1'ish archsorcerer outfit.

• JADE
- Jade is the hottest character of MK. She got style, she's got tanned skin, she fights with a staff and she is strong and tough. She has always been among my top 3 favourite characters with Mileena and Kitana mostly because she has an interesting storyline, she is sexy, she got style and she has original special moves.
- I wouldn't c hange anything about Jade, but I think a little light armor would make her more credible as a war general, and she also needs a twist in her story. She could get mad at her queen and/or princess or something. I don,t know, Jade just looks like the kind of girl who gets what she wants and even though she is loyal, I wouldn't try to get her mad at me.

• TANYA
- Mortal Kombat needs a treacherous bitch.
- She needs to look like she's gotten her lesson, but will never back down. Keep her bangs and big breasts, I liked that. Her special moves were great too, but she needs a new ally. She gave the boomerang a weapon status again, why give her kama-tonfas weapons and call it kobu jutsu.... just bring the boomerang back, and make it so that she can use it as a melee weapon also.

• GORO
- Mortal Kombat is not Mortal Kombat without Goro.
- I wouldn't change anything about him, but he needs to be BULKY and he needs a new signature move that would last. I would like to see him team up with Kitana again.

• KINTARO
- He has always been a fan favourite.
- He has lots of potential but he was always in the shadows. Make him even bigger than Goro and give him a great storyline! Give him personalized special moves and make him look even more like a tiger/shokan hybrid, to distinguish him from Goro.

• MOTARO
- MK needs a game where Goro, Kintaro, Shao Kahn and Motaro are all playable (...MKT I know but meh it's old now) Also, he earned his spot as the centaurian star of Mortal Kombat.
- He has endless possibilities when it comes to special moves, he has style and by the way, give him his four legs back... damn.

- Iconic character, coolest earthrealm female and LEG GRAB!!
- She can stay the same, just give her a new twist in her storyline.

- He's got interesting powers and storyline, he has a lot of potential.
- I want his control water orb back! Lol! His special moves always rocked and his outfit got awesome in MKA, all he needs is to look more of a badass, like a cape of divine powers, something that reminds us that he's half-deity.

• BARAKA
- Arm Blades are really nice, i want to see them again but...
- ... he BADLY needs something new : New moves AND a new story... otherwise he'll just be boring.

• LI MEI
- Because she is a fresh new character and she has only gotten better and better.
- I want her to become evil, tainted by the dragon king's influence. She needs to become a Li-Mei/Dragon Queen hybrid muhahaha!

• KUNG LAO
- He's the coolest character who uses a hat to fight ever! He's always had cool fatalities and a sexy outfit.
- I want him to gain new signature moves, like throwing having a move where his hat spins around him, or something original.

• NIGHTWOLF
- He's got potential but he never really was used to his maximum.
- I want him to look like a real shaman, with feathers and all, and he need spectacular, magical moves.

• SINDEL
- She has to be more than just a queen, but she still has potential.
- Make her a goddess-like character, give her flight moves again, and give her moves that she can use only when shes airborne. She is original already, she just needs an edge.

• FUJIN
- Just like Sindel, he has potential but he is kind of boring.
- Make him look like a real god of wind, he should never touch the ground and he should have powerful moves, to make him as nearly as powerful as Raiden.

• NITARA
- She is MK iconic vampire, she is sexy and she needs a new storyline, maybe add some vampire dude to her story.
- I want her to have totally new special moves, because her special moves kinda suck. She has so much potential it would be a waste to not use her in future MK games.

• HOTARU
- Of all the latest newcomers, hes one of my favourites. He has an original role, appearance and storyline especially compared to the other newcomers. I liked how he looked like a good guy, but his sense of order would drive him to do evil deeds. Hes got all a great character needs, but he needs a twist in his storyline (like most of the characters).

I would also welcome Kenshi, Havik, Liu Kang, Stryker, Sheeva, Mavado, Sektor, Cyrax, Noob Saibot and a few others, but they would need to have a MAJOR change in appearance, special moves and storyline.

Yeah I do agree about what you said about Hotaru. i just thought the flags and his deceiving appearance made him more original than most of the newer characters. I wouldnt mind if he didnt make it though. And you put Kitana in both the likely and the 50/50 sections... where do u think she belongs the most? For my part Id really like to see her back, and I think she has good chances.

I don't really want too many returning characters. And of the characters I do want back, I'd prefer they be the more recent additions than an avalanche of sacred cows from MK1 & 2.

Not only that but I think Jade should be a secret hidden character since I find her the coolest and the one who can perform the nastiest fatalities ever. I mean, she can really get dirty with the staff by shoving it through an opponent's butt.

I like the way that xiahoudun organized his list, so I'm going to follow suit. I added more characters, especially to the "don't want back at all" group. I think that I'm still missing three or four characters.
Oh yeah, I was also bored, so I put them in the order of how much I wanted them in the next game and my opinion of them.
This list is divided into four categories. First are the characters I definitely want back, with only some tune-ups or minor revisions:
1. Sareena (I think that her character has more room to grow)
2. Scorpion (Make him human again... Hiroshi Hanzo)
3. Drahmin (what happened to him!? Reimagine based on MK:DA end)
4. Shang Tsung (I want him to be the new Chosen One for the good guys)
5. Sub Zero (strange idea, but maybe make him a spirit? Ghost?)
6. Mavado (Would love to see an angle where he's forced in to being good)
7. Shao Kahn (I'd love to see him back as a defeated, reduced character)
8. Kenshi (Take him away from do-gooders group, better as lone warrior)
9. Fujin (Make him Earth's protector, but give him some cooler moves too)
10. Kung Lao (I'm talking about the original Kung Lao from WAY back)
11. Kai (I still think that his character has more depth to be culled)
12. Smoke (Make him human again, maybe trying to revive Sub Zero)
Next are the characters I might want back, but I either only want them under certain conditions or I'm not that attached to them:
1. Rayden (he needs something new. Protector, mean God... Try again)
2. Sonya (I still like her, but she should't be with Kano/Jax angle anymore)
3. Mileena (would like to see her kill Kitana)
4. Quan Chi (He's a good plot device character. Good to have around)
5. Kira (Horribly underdeveloped character... Still has potential... Maybe?)
6. Shinnok (He could be cool if the Heavens were battling Earth, wild card)
7. Noob (I'd like a new character from the Brotherhood of the Shadow)
8. Baraka (Needs to stop being a henchmen! But he seems so dumb...)

6. Darrius (unimagintive moves need an overhaul. Ditch the storyline too)
7. Stryker (A stupid part of me thinks that he could be cool if done right)
8. Hotaru (His armor was decent and so is his weapon, that's about it)
9. Kabal (His story played out in MK:D, so he'd need something new)
10 Sektor (Not too big on cyber ninjas, needs a new look)
11 Frost (Never really liked the female Sub Zero)
12. Ermac (Barely makes it. Sorry, he's a collection of souls. That's it)
And finally the characters I don't want back under any circumstances:
1. Tanya (She always struck me as the yellow female ninja, no need)
2. Reiko (All he ever did was pose as Shao Khan. No point whatsoever)
3. Kintaro (Awesome sub boss, but he's part of the past to me)
4. Cyrax (From his goofy net to his grenades, I never dug him)
5. Sindel (Never dug the screaming bride of frankenstein)
6. Nightwolf (Another weak MK3 character. No more Village People please)
7. Dairou (really weak character design, outfit design, story etc)
8. Goro (A good sub boss, but not necessary in terms of characters)
9. The Dragon King (The only part he should have is when he gets killed)
10.Sheeva (She's alright, but I see no real reason to bring her back)
11.Jarek (He always looked so normal and average to me. Kinda lame)
12.Daegon (Never liked this story and he looks ridiculous)

I started off agreeing with the original list, but it became more relaxed towards the end. Now, this list is not going to be about my favourites. I am looking at this from an unbiased, business-perspective. But here are the characters that I think absolutely should come back:
1. Sub-Zero
2. Scorpion
3. Kitana
4. Raiden
5. Liu Kang
6. Kenshi
7. Li Mei
8. Havik
Now, some of these might be met with criticisms, but here is why:
Sub-Zero and Scorpion are the iconic ninjas. A Mortal Kombat game without them, much to my chagrin, will always be met with apprehension. Sub-Zero actually has a logical reason to return. In the story, he has been faced with some shocking revelations, and has been groomed to become more of a main protagonist. It makes perfect sense for him to return. Scorpion's story is a lot weaker, but his popularity is enough reason to bring him back.
Continuing lip-service to fans, I think that is enough reason for Raiden to find his way in there. Even if he has been punished by the Elder Gods to fight alongside mortals until he is slain. I don't know, it just makes sense to include Raiden. The same goes for Kitana, the most iconic female character in the MK universe. They could very easily retire her character as "being at peace," but thus far she has only served as the Princess of Edenia -- it makes perfect sense to explore how she goes dealing with the loss of her mother, and being forced to take the reigns of an entire realm. Perhaps she refuses it? Interesting story right there.
Liu Kang will get the most criticism, I feel. Like it or not, though, he is one of the most iconic MK characters. In pretty much every game, he is the "chosen one" for Earthrealm. He's the Superman saving the day. This has also been true in other related MK media. And while that should definitely change, I do not feel that it is a good move to drop Liu Kang off completely. Give him one more chance to fight. Maybe a new engine and a sharper story will revitalise him?
Kenshi and Li Mei are new characters worth a damn. Kenshi had such a cool look, and the idea of a "psychic-swordsman" is something you can run with to the bank. There is no reason that Kenshi cannot grow to be something as iconic as even Sub-Zero and Scorpion. His writing has not been the absolute strongest, but a fresh start could do wonders for Kenshi. I could easily consider him as critical to Earth's story as Liu Kang or Sub-Zero. As for Li Mei -- I feel that she has been crafted beautifully. Her first game was a little rough, but Deception was a huge coming out party for her. She's a female protagonist that has survived "being a clone," and storyline-wise, she has been taught under Master Bo' Rai Cho. This lends her weight, in my opinion, and if she has a relevant story, she could fit in perfectly and uniquely without stepping on anyone's toes or clogging the story up too much with redundant characters.
Havik is another brilliant new character. He could so easily become Mortal Kombat's Joker. He shows up, not really having much of a specified agenda, and causes shit for everybody. He's got some cool enough special moves concepts that the MK Team can build on, and there will always be a place for him in Mortal Kombat, I feel.
To me, those are the only characters that are DEMANDING a return. You can make a case for so many as having "potential," or whatever, but I don't feel there is anyone else in the series who could disappear and not leave a big gaping hole. Sorry, even Reptile. His story should have ended with his Deadly Alliance ending, at the LATEST. It doesn't mean the character cannot be revisited in remakes or the like -- I just don't see him fitting into the future at all.
There are three more characters sitting on a tier just below these 8, in my opinion:

Jax has a very good chance of coming back, anyway, because he is one of Boon's favourites. It also gives the series another one of its female characters to take forward, and well as an African-American character. That being said, if both characters were retired, I don't think it would be too damaging to the series.
Shao Kahn could be brilliant. As a playable character, you could finally enter Kahn as the protagonist of his own story. He's been the villain of the MK universe for quite a while, but if he lost his throne, the concept of Kahn trying to regain it -- or even fighting against a greater evil is intriguing. The idea of his interactions with Earthrealm's warriors, as well as Li Mei are interesting. Then you also have Kitana still around, and while that horse has been beaten well past its expirary point, Kitana's obsession with Kahn could become a fresh point to her story on its own. If she sacrifices leading her realm to hunt down Kahn, it provides Kitana with a less regal, more "edgy" persona.
And then there are the characters with potential. I won't go into them, but I feel that bringing them back (at least right away), might just cause the problems that this original exile of them was meant to remedy in the first place. Keep it simple, and keep it easy. You could just retire some characters. Maybe Jade could be leading Edenia while Kitana is off fighting in tournaments? You don't need to kill her off. Taven and Fujin could be just behind the scenes. They're not dead, but they don't need to play an active role right away.
One character that I can safely say I don't feel has potential is Baraka. Sorry, Baraka fans. The character was so one-dimensional, and could so easily be replaced. They had a chance to go further with the character right up until Deception, but they blew it every time. Yeah, we get it, he's cool because he has blades that come from his hands like Wolverine. Give me a character with armour that has built-in pertruding blades, and you've already got a more interesting character right there. Why the blades? Is it an homage to the Tarkata? Is this character just a sadistic bastard. Conceal their face, and you an an enigmatic character with the same sort of weapon-style as Baraka that is instantly more intriguing.

you people are all posting rosters of like 10-30 returning characters. I doubt MK9 will have that many fighters in them. Im guessing maybe 24 tops for the fighters list and even so im guessing that a large majority of them will be new

My theory is that the last game had 22 characters so they would want to increase the roster for the next game. This is the pattern most fighting games follow. However, you may be right in that they may include only 2 more slots. I'm guessing they will push for 28-35.
