Since Kitana is specifically using Jade's staff...I'm gonna say it's lookin' grim for ol' Jade.

I would definitely prefer actually seeing this character just stay out if they are trying to show us a legit death here with Kitana's "Mournful" variant. It sort of defeats the purpose of what this variation is trying to represent if Kitana is to have a Jade costume.

I mean, a bunch of you are complaining that "oh the returnees are returning ONCE AGAIN," and you want a Jade costume because she's not in the game... I don't get it.

I'm a Jade fan, but with what Icebaby said, in a whole...I agree.

I think most of us agree with you that that will be the most likely explanation for only some characters returning, (although saving their souls and resurrecting them should be different things), it sounds contrived and uncreative as hell though, I really hope they surprise us with something better than that.

I'm thinking some of the revenants are sent to outworld and are destroyed there instead of turned good again like the ones sent to earthrealm.

Honestly I wouldn't want a Jade alt for Kitana, though I think making Kitana's alternate color green instead of another hue of blue could do the nostalgic trick I guess if one wants to main the staff variant.

Even though I am not really concerned about Jade's return for this game, wouldn't having a non-canon Jade skin be better than nothing at all, at least for the hardcore Jade fans?

Idk I personally think having other characters as alts is cool, like in MK9 I could be Bi-Han when playing SZ and I loved it, then they had Sektor and Cyrax's human forms as alts in MK9 which was cool, I didn't like their human forms but I saw plenty of people online who used only their human forms when playing.

Then in Injustice there was a John Stewart alt for Green Lantern, that way the Hal and John fans could play as who they like, they also had alts for Nightwing so the Grayson fans could be him and the Damien Wayne fans could be him.

Hell I remember hoping that we would get a Superboy Prime alt for Supes and a Zoom alt for Flash even if they weren't related to the story and just a non-canon skin for the characters that played the same way.

I get that some would rather their favorites not be a recycled character with a different outfit on, but I would certainly prefer it over absolutely nothing, especially if it clearly has no relation to the story and is non-canon.
