What if MK8 and the future of MK was in a different continuity in the series?

If any of you read comic books, you'll know that Ultimate Spider-Man and the original Spider-Man are two different versions of the character, part of two different storylines, and universes.

What if this is how MK8 is; a game involving elements of the past MKs, but not having any historical ties for it. Basically taking the characters and redefining them.

For example, instead of being a battle of epic proportions through realms etc, the battle could be more political on the scale of one planet. Say Outworld. And say in this new continuity The two rival factions are Kitana and Shao Kahn, and that their rivalling armies are The Lin Kuei and the Shira Ryu. Still have the characters be vaguely the same, but with a different past.

It doesn't have to be this example, but imagine the possibility of a new continuity as a way to revive a series that's had way too many bad plot extensions tacked on the end. It'd be fresh, yet familiar.

If you HAD to have a connection to the past games, it could be said that the elder gods planted this false history in the minds of the Kombatants in order to keep them from coming so dangerously close to awakening the One Being again.
