Tekken 5 was a curious one. In my opinion, it was Tekken with a serious swirl of Mortal Kombat stylings through it.
Feng Wei is a character I think would make an interesting MK villain.

What about Mavado from MKDA? He was Asian, Chinese I think.

Depending on where you get your sources, Shang Tsung comes from Outworld or an unspecified location in Earthrealm, most likely China. The fact that he is Liu Kang's nemesis kind of adds to the Chinese thing, since he's always hated Rayden and the Shaolin, particularly after the whole original Kung Lao deal. He is the Asian evildoer I think.
It doesn't really make sense for Mavado to come from Spain for me, since he doesn't look Spanish and is a member of a Chinese clan. Besides, the fact that his name was a pun on a Spanish word means nothing, since Bo Rai Cho is also based on a pun from a Spanish word (Boracho, meaning drunk), while Rain is a pun from an American pop artist. By that kind of logic, Bo Rai Cho is Spanish and Rain is from Yankland.
Also, despite the fact that Kano is American by birthright, and Australian thanks to Threshold, he is also Asian, since he was orphaned in Japan, and probably lived there for awhile before the Black Dragon drafted him in.

Actually, Kano was raised by an American woman in Tokyo so that doesn't mean that Kano himself is American.
As for Mavado, well, he sort of has a Spanish look to me. The Red Dragon was never really stated as being a Chinese clan though it may be possible.

He's Asian, but he's not really similar to Liu Kang (re: topic).
I think he's talking about more of a yang, to Liu's yin.
Someone that's more akin to a general fighter, that champions the side of evil. (Ala Tekken's -- Feng Wei)
I mean, even despite his countless defeats, Shang Tsung is still pretty comfortably a level above Liu Kang in terms of the stature of his character. He's a tier up, at the very least.
Actually, just going back to the Tekken character, it occurs to me that it's almost odd that MK hasn't created any analogue, or comparable character to other systems.
I mean, it's not the most admorable of ways to create a character, but given the humorous nature of Mortal Kombat, I guess I'm just surprised they haven't lampooned anyone, or reflected them. Not that it would've been a great idea, at least until now, most beat 'em ups more than had their ticket in the technical department.
It would be interesting to see, though. I thought Tekken 5 had a real MK flavour to it.
devilwithin The boy kicked out at the world. The world kicked back a lot fuckin' harder.

No, just a character that's on a similar level as Liu.
Contrary to popular belief, not all Asian martial artists are blood relatives.

No, his bio for MK1 specifically stated that he was of American parentage, and that he was orphaned in Japan early in his youth; the logical conclusion of that is that he is Western (as his physical apperance would suggest) but with a more oriental nationality (as his membership of the Black Dragon suggests; according to MKDA's Konquest the Black Dragon was started by the guy who formed Aikido, an oriental martial art). I think it only became a global operation when Kano came into the picture.
As for Mavado, I thought he looked Asian; he doesn't look like any Spanish person I have ever met. I say that the Red Dragon are Chinese based on certain evidence, the fact that the Black Dragon, another originally oriental group, spawned from them early on, the fact that they fought with the Lin Kuei in their past (MKD Konquest), and also because they seem to do their recruiting in China, i.e. Hsu Hao.

His bio for MK1? I don't remember it saying anything about that. Where did you get this bio from anyway? I don't remember anything about the Black Dragon and Lin Kuei fighting in MKD's Konquest. Where was that? To Mick-Lucifer: Don't you mean Yin to Liu Kang's Yang? If I remember from what I learned about Daoism, Yang represents light and good while Yin represents dark and evil.

And dead.
But um, why do we need an anti-Liu Kang anyway?

And a tier or two too low, I'd say.

And what would this type of character do exactly? What would his significance be to the storyline?

I ain't feeling an Anti-Kang. We just don't need one, there's already a bushel of Asians in MK, what about the other nationalities in earthrealm? Come on and represent.
If Shang tsung is not the antithesis of Liu kang then i eat my hat. A Liu Kang like villain would not be quite the opposite. Yin-Yang means total opposition, so if they look even a bit similar, he is not the yang one.
Besides from total dualism, I would recommend a female counterpart this way, as yang is essentially a female essence as I recall. As for another blatant martial atrtist stereotype ripoff, leave it. For the sake of MK leave it.
p.s: Hsu Hao is Mongolian.

Yin is the female essence. As for Hsu Hao's ethnicity, it was never officially stated though he could be Mongolian.
