Tobias' comic books are as canon they come. It's also been mentioned in the actual games a few times.

But yeah, it's an interesting development. Definitely not what I would've expected Kuatan to look like. Osh-Tekk or even Earthrealm, maybe, but not Kuatan. We'll see how it ties into the story, I guess.

I am concerned with all of the name changes for the stages. Like the Ice Forest is now known as the Dead Woods.

I think they changed it from Cove to Kove shortly after E3 when they joked about they misspelled it. I think in the Gamescom build with Kano it was already "The Kove".

Well unless the shokan got nuked, I dont think its possible that the shokan race been wiped out. I mean they got 4 arms and even the tartarkans and centaur couldnt handle them

Or maybe the Shokan weren't the only inhabitants of their realm, and some other race also lived there back in the day.

Maybe the Jungle was originally part of Zaterra and became part of Kuatan Territory when Zaterra was absorbed/Merged into Outworld?

Maybe whatever species Ferra is (MK twist on Fairy?) used to live in the Kuatan Jungle and originally rode around on Shokan until the Shokan eventually got pissed and killed off her race. She somehow survived and found a new piggy back buddy in Torr, a Shokan who was cast out and forced to live alone in the Kuatan Jungle because he was born with a severe disability. He only had two arms.

I think the link with Reptile is more than obvious right now with Quan Chi's line. What this means for the story? I think it might be that Reptile is out for the Shokan / Kotal Kahn / Quan Chi for the killing of his race and he manipulates one of these while betraying another. This would work with his alternate costume which does not reveal much about his reptilian background.

Could he be the ally that betrays Kotal Kahn? Reptile during the intro says we must work together so it's obvious Reptile chooses to allign with Kotal, not the other way around. Does he have a hidden agenda? The possibilities are endless, but me thinks he will use or betray Kotal.

Kuatan was an underground semi-indipendent province of Outworld. The whole region was made or rocks, earth and lava.

Well changing Cove to Kove was a no brainer. When Ed said they screwed up with the spelling I knew it was going to be changed shortly after that.
